TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Sent to stay overnight at Yan Rui’s, Qingyuan finds herself in a rare, tender moment as he tends her injuries, while back home the Xie family quietly decides to lean into his obvious interest by arranging a formal betrothal. At the Spring Banquet, she pulls off a clever manipulation to help Qinghe win real happiness, stealing Yan Rui’s own token in the process, and by episode’s end, his growing, undeniable feelings for her are impossible to ignore.
A Thoughtful Gift
Yan Rui purchases new clothes for Qingyuan, his attendant surprised at how precisely he’d judged her measurements. He dismisses the servant to have the garment delivered rather than address the comment directly.
A messenger from the Xie residence arrives that same night bearing a formal red letter, explaining that given the cold weather and Qingyuan’s still-recovering injuries, the family humbly requests she be permitted to stay overnight at his villa to recuperate.
The letter goes further, drawing a poetic comparison between Qingyuan and a freshly blossomed plum branch, suggesting it would be fitting placed in the celadon vase beside his bed. Yan Rui can’t help but smile at how readily the Xie family has essentially offered her up.
A Sister’s Devastation
Back at the Xie household, Qinghe learns from her mother, that Qingyuan is being betrothed to Yan Rui. Desperate to intervene, she’s stopped by her mother, who reminds her painfully that they have no real power within the household to change anything.
She recalls her own failed attempt to protect Qingyuan’s mother years earlier. She warns Qinghe that the family’s position leaves them unable to shield anyone, herself included, and reminds her of the approaching Spring Banquet where Madam Pei will be selecting a bride for her son, Pei Guanling, urging her not to cause any further trouble.
Qinghe, still troubled, promises that once Qingyuan returns from Yan Rui’s residence, they’ll treat her with real kindness to make up for their inability to help her now.
A Tender Visit
Changing into a striking red dress, Qingyuan receives a visit from Yan Rui, who’s brought medicine to tend her wounds. She deflects sarcastically, asking which of his many companions the dress was originally intended for. She tries to wave off the medicine but he insists, sitting her down and applying the ointment himself.
When the sting makes her wince, he tells her she can grip his hand harder if it helps. He scolds her gently for the dangerous gamble she’d taken accepting the punishment, pointing out she could have permanently lost use of her hand had her meridians been damaged.
She reminds him that she won her bet regardless. Though she tries to leave, he insists she stay the night, and she agrees to settle the score properly the next day with sweets and medicinal food sent from Grandma Chen.

A Banquet, and an Ambush
At the Spring Banquet, the noble families gather amid lush gardens, Madam Hu eagerly promoting Qingrong as a match for Pei Guanling, while Qingrong and her sister chat about the tradition of exchanging orchid knots for peonies with those they love.
When Qingyuan arrives in her striking red gown, she draws every eye in the garden. Qingrong seizes the moment to mock her cruelly, loudly questioning whether she’d slept well at Yan Rui’s villa the night before.
A Sharp Retort, and a Rescue
Qingyuan responds with calm precision, warning her sister that such baseless accusations damage the reputation of every Xie daughter, herself included. When the sisters get angry, the Lady Prefect intervenes sharply.
She reveals that Yan Rui had actually sent Qingyuan to spend the night at the Prefect’s own residence, and demanding to know whether they mean to imply her household is some kind of disreputable establishment. Mortified, the sisters are forced into a hasty apology.
A Growing Rumour
As the day’s games continue, whispers spread quickly through the gathered nobility about Qingyuan’s supposed exploits, her night with Yan Rui followed almost immediately by apparent flirtation with Li Congxin, heir to the Marquis of Danyang, drawing pointed, unkind comparisons to her mother’s own reputation.
Qingyuan, undeterred, turns her sharp wit on Congxin himself, questioning his showy horsemanship and whether his apparent love of horses is genuine or simply another performance for the crowd’s admiration.
Yan Rui’s Arrival
Yan Rui finally arrives at the banquet, drawing immediate attention and gossip of his own, teased good-naturedly about having lost track of time the night before in the company of a courtesan from Zuixian Tavern. He notices Qingyuan talking to Li Congxin and with the official holding him in such high regard as a potential suitor, Yan Rui is less than impressed.
As the Chuiwan match is about to begin, word spreads that the Founding Countess has promised Pei Guanling the woman he loves as his prize, should he win the match, adding real stakes to the day’s competition.
A Rigged Draw
Qingyuan volunteers to handle the pairings for the match. She cleverly manipulates the lottery draw to control the pairings, arranging for Pei Guanling to partner with Qinghe, while Li Congxin plays alongside Qingru.
Watching Li Congxin’s skilled play, Qinghe grows increasingly anxious about the mismatch, but Qingyuan notices something the others miss, Pei Guanling is visibly holding back, clearly favouring an old injury in his right arm.

A Deliberate Concession
With the first match ending in a tie, Qingyuan pulls Qinghe aside during the break and advises her to concede the next round. Qinghe worries the fiercely competitive Pei Guanling would never agree to such a thing, but Qingyuan reassures her this is the only real path to a win. Qinghe follows through, formally conceding the round, costing Yan Rui his own five-hundred-tael bet placed on Pei Guanling in the meantime. The plan works exactly as intended.
A Mother’s Gratitude
Touched by Qinghe’s attentiveness toward her son’s injury, Madam Pei accepts her orchid knot warmly, instructing her to accompany Pei Guanling to see a physician, promising to smooth over any objections from her own mother. Watching the whole manoeuvre unfold, Yan Rui can’t help but admire just how deftly Qingyuan orchestrated the entire outcome.
A Stolen Token
As the guests move to exchange their tokens of affection, Yan Rui approaches Qingyuan, demanding her orchid knot, but she refuses outright. Moments later, Li Congxin steps forward to ask for it himself, only for Qingyuan to realize, with real shock, that Yan Rui had already secretly pocketed it.
When Li Congxin tries to offer her his own peony instead, Qingru protests jealously. Yan Rui materializes to flaunt that he’s already claimed Qingyuan’s token, dismissively making decisions on her behalf without her consent. Furious, Li Congxin is pulled away by Qingru before things escalate, and Pei Guanling reminds him not to make a scene in front of so many guests.
Invited to join the others for a game of cards, Qingyuan politely declines, explaining she has urgent matters to discuss with Yan Rui, and encourages the group to head home ahead of her.
Spring of the Blade Episode 5 Recap: My Thoughts
And so we now get the first real scene showing a genuine connection between the two leads, that whole medicine-application moment, which so many period dramas tends to mark the true beginning of romance. You see his softer side clearly, and it’s obvious he has no ill intentions toward her at all.
I do wonder in this scene whether he actually knows who she really is, she doesn’t seem to realize he’s Shen Run, but I find myself wondering whether he already recognizes her as the childhood friend he once made that vow with, to avenge the families that were destroyed. He’s tough and cocky on the surface but soft underneath, and while she may feel grateful in the moment, I still think her walls are firmly up, and she isn’t letting him in easily.
I really enjoyed the whole Spring Banquet arc, partly because it gave us a real respite from the fast pacing of the first few episodes. Episode 5 slowed things down considerably, and it was visually different too, which I appreciated. It was also interesting watching the various pairings play out and meeting some new characters, and satisfying seeing Qingyuan’s manipulation pay off so well for Qinghe, who’s such a lovely, deserving character.
Yan Rui seems impressed by what Qingyuan pulled off, happy enough with the outcome that forfeiting his five-hundred-tael bet barely bothered him. Throughout the whole Spring Banquet arc, you can really sense his feelings building in him toward her, even as she remains visibly resistant to the whole situation.
He clearly has real feelings for her, and stealing her orchid knot reads as more than simple irritation, there’s real emotion behind it too, I think. It’s completely natural that she’d feel wary given everything, he keeps turning up wherever she goes, keeps pushing her into things she doesn’t want to do, all while carrying this outward persona of a corrupt official.
