An Alliance Is Struck

Tingyun lays it out plainly for Zhao Ling. She’s an unmarried woman with no way to move through official circles alone, and helping the Sixteenth Master untangle the salt corruption benefits them both, protecting vulnerable people while earning her the kind of recognition that means nobody gets to decide her fate for her ever again. She pushes him further, asking if he’s actually ready to become the real Jiuweijiao, not just wear the name. Something in that question lands, and he agrees.

Meanwhile, the prince’s own agent storms back furious, realizing Zhao Ling had played him into doing the dirty work of capturing Feng Laosi’s men. The Sixteenth Master steps in anyway, formally naming Zhao Ling his informant and ordering the two of them to work as a team going forward. The look of exasperation on General Mo’s face is hilarious.

Yu Jingxiu Draws a Line

The next morning, Yu Jingxiu wakes groggy from drugged wine and confronts Fan Yake about it. She admits the truth, Madam Yu ordered her to slip him something so he’d end up alone with Tingyun, but unable to go through with it, she’d quietly let Tingyun go instead, even offering to end their engagement outright if his heart belongs elsewhere.

Once he assures her there’s nothing between him and Tingyun, he heads straight for his mother, defying her openly for the first time. When she accuses him of ingratitude, he grabs an inkstone and threatens to smash his own hand, willing to forfeit the exams entirely rather than let her break her word about his marriage.

She pleads that a mother and son are as inseparable as a lotus seed and its pod. He fires back that a seed kept locked inside its pod never gets the chance to become anything on its own.

Terms of Engagement

Impressed by both Zhao Ling and Tingyun, the Crown Prince promises real rewards if they can crack the salt permit corruption wide open. Tingyun wastes no time putting Madam Yu in her place, demanding she vouch for her entry into Yongning’s official social circles under the name Miss Xie, a supposed distant relative.

When Madam Yu balks at being upstaged, Tingyun gives her a flat choice, comply or step aside entirely, with a pointed warning not to repeat the fatal mistakes of the late Fu matriarch. Madam Yu concedes. Watching Fu Tingyun in a position of power is incredibly satisfying, and she does it well. She does so with grace, never rubbing it in Madam Yu’s face.

Dividing the Work

Together with the prince, they map out their approach. Lord Yan, the region’s Salt Transport Commissioner, runs his illicit permit trade through his wife, so Zhao Ling will pose as a wealthy Jiangnan merchant to draw her out, while Tingyun works the social circuit of official wives, where real intelligence quietly changes hands over tea and card games.

Zhao Ling Rebuilds the Network

Once he’s settled Tingyun into her new residence, Zhao Ling sets about reclaiming Jiuweijiao’s old empire, working with the prince’s men to capture Yang Yucheng, the former lieutenant who once betrayed him. He threatens to burn the gang’s command token, and when Yang Yucheng lunges to save it from the burning coals, discovers too late it’s a decoy, the real one’s already safe in Zhao Ling’s hand. Cornered, he surrenders everything, warehouses, boats, docks, entire shipping lines.

Curious why the token mattered so much to him, Zhao Ling learns it’s tied to finding his mother, and hands it back without hesitation. Together they track her down, discovering she’d been held hostage this whole time as leverage for three years of forced service. Moved, Yang Yucheng offers to work for Zhao Ling unpaid for three years in gratitude. Zhao Ling refuses the offer outright, telling him once their business in Yongning wraps up, he’s free to walk away entirely.

A Quiet Admission

Tingyun praises Zhao Ling’s character, something she’s known since he pulled her out of Biyun Nunnery. He brushes it off, visibly uncomfortable being praised so directly, and walks away. Although we knew she felt this way, this is the first time she said it knowingly in front of him. You can tell her genuine admiration for him.

She arranges for Zheng Sanniang to look after Yang Yucheng’s mother, then writes home to her own mother, declaring she intends to build her own future through her own effort rather than returning to shelter behind the family name.

Setting the Trap for Madam Yan

With Jiuweijiao’s assets fully in hand, they turn their attention to their first mission of eradicating illegal salt trading activities. We meet Madam Yan, who’s built her fortune by claiming vivid dreams of luxury goods that desperate salt merchants scramble to provide in exchange for salt trading permits.

Backed by real funding from the prince, Tingyun starts coaching Zhao Ling on how to move through high society, teaching him the same quiet elegance the prince himself carries, right down to how a nobleman properly pours tea. She walks to stands behind him and lifts his elbow, this is the first time we have a scene in the series of romance. It looks like Tingyun is falling first!

A Reputation Built on Spending

Zhao Ling puts the lessons to work fast, rejecting a plain inkstone at an antique shop for a rare greenstone piece laced with gold veining, paying five thousand taels without blinking, and setting the whole city talking.

Then, spotting Zheng Sanniang picking up fabric meant for Tingyun, he buys every last bolt of newly arrived Huzhou silk in Yongning, declaring publicly that no one but Miss Xie is permitted to wear it. The extravagance catches the eye of the prince’s own advisor, Master Zhao, cementing Zhao Ling’s new reputation as a salt tycoon with money to burn and grows increasingly annoyed.

Out on the street, Tingyun graciously yields her carriage’s path to Madam Yan on Madam Yu’s behalf, and Madam Yu formally introduces her under the Miss Xie alias as a close companion of her future daughter-in-law, announcing the two young women will jointly attend Madam Yan’s birthday banquet.

A Rivalry Over Etiquette

That evening, Madam Yu instructs Fan Yake to attend Madam Yan’s birthday banquet on her behalf, bringing Tingyun along and quietly watching how she handles herself socially. Stung by the implied criticism but determined to prove herself anyway, Fan Yake sells off three chests of her late father’s rare annotated manuscripts, part of her own dowry, just to cover the cost of a proper gift.

Meanwhile, Zhao Ling returns home bearing gifts of rare live Huajin crabs and has asked the kitchen to prepare them for Tingyun as she is mulling over an appropriate gift to give Madam Yan. She knows that for her to make a lasting impression, it has to be something rare. As she’s conversing with Zhao Ling, she smells the crabs and instantly has an idea.

The Banquet

At the Yan residence, surrounded by the wives and daughters of prominent officials, Fan Yake tries asserting her authority early, telling Tingyun to wait outside given her supposedly lower status, promising a proper introduction later. Inside, her carefully chosen incense burner turns out nearly identical to several other guests’ gifts, an embarrassing miscalculation.

She introduces Tingyun anyway, framed as Miss Xie, fiancée of the increasingly famous Mr. Zhao, apologizing on her behalf for arriving empty-handed, only to be corrected on the spot. Rather than a token gift, Zhao Ling delivers live Huajin crabs shipped fresh from the Lianghuai salt region take centre stage at the feast. Fan Yake tries one more dig, pointing out it’s simply crab season, nothing special about that.

It backfires spectacularly. The other guests immediately recognize what it actually took, chartering entire fleets just to keep seafood alive across dangerous river routes. Incredibly satisfying to see her efforts get crumbled. She’s simply not smart enough to gain favour amongst these noblewomen.

Working the Room

Tingyun credits the feat smoothly to her fiancé’s transport network, angling the conversation toward Yongning’s salt permits, though Madam Yan deflects with practiced ease, steering everyone back to enjoying the feast instead.

A Moment in the Rain

As the banquet lets out under a downpour, Zhao Ling arrives to collect her, and rather than let her navigate the mud, he piggybacks her, then drops to one knee, cupping her shoe in his palm to guide her safely up into the carriage while every woman watching looks on with open envy. Tingyun is surprised by this gesture and although reluctant at first out of respect and shyness, she clearly loved every minute of it.

Inside, she tells him quietly that the display wasn’t necessary. He redirects instead, asking whether she managed to learn what Madam Yan actually dreams about. She answers with quiet confidence, she already knows exactly what the woman wants.

He may have very well done that gesture under the pretence of putting on a show but you can tell he cares about her and did it because he wanted to. It was very sweet and very swoon worthy. She was clearly beside herself and you can see her feelings for him are growing. Such a beautiful scene. Worth the envy of all those women watching on.

The Road to Splendor Episode 7 Recap: My Thoughts

This episode is heavy on the romance and we finally get to see some real emotions here. We have the scene where she shows him how to pour tea and their close proximity gets Tingyun flustered. That carriage scene in the rain is the most romantic moment the show has delivered so far, small, quiet, and clearly sincere rather than performative.

The roguish Zhao Ling is becoming protective and soft when it comes to Tingyun but he never loses his edge. I am appreciating this slow burn as the show builds on their relationship through shared survival and mutual respect. While she always knew she needed him to survive on her own, he didn’t know he would need someone like her.

We also start to see where the strategic side of the story really clicks into gear, and it’s genuinely fun watching Tingyun and Zhao Ling operate as a real team rather than two people grudgingly tolerating each other. Also loving the Yang Yucheng storyline and outward display of Zhao Ling’s compassion.

Yu Jingxiu finally growing a spine against his mother is a satisfying beat too, long overdue given how much control she’s had over him. For the first time we see Madam Yu sad and break her stoic demeanour. Maybe she does have a heart after all.
