The Road To Splendor Episode 22 Recap

Making Peace
Tingyun brews herbal medicine for Zhao Ling herself once they’re home, and he milks his condition for all it’s worth, grumbling about the indignity of kneeling in the rain and being lectured on manners by Fifth Master Fu in the process.
She reminds him, not without exasperation, that she’d already cut ties with the Fu family entirely and taken the Xie name, so he never needed to go there in the first place. When his cough turns theatrically worse, she steps closer anyway, even knowing exactly what he’s doing.
He catches her hand and finally apologizes, meaning it. She forgives him, asking only that from now on, they actually talk to each other honestly. Looking ahead, she admits she’d love to eventually settle back in Ganlin Town together. Since the capital, for all its wealth and prestige, has trapped him in endless political manoeuvring he can barely eat or breathe through. Whatever the reform throws at him, she promises, she’ll be right there to help him carry it.
That fake coughing fit was so him, and honestly, how is anyone supposed to stay mad looking into those puppy dog eyes? I was so relieved watching them finally talk things through properly, and even happier once the lamp oil actually got delivered. They really are each other’s strongest support system.
A Bad Meal
That night, Fifth Master Fu ignores his daughter-in-law’s warning and eats the rain-soaked tribute lamb anyway, unwilling to pass up something touched by imperial favour. He pays for it hours later, doubled over in agony and demanding a physician in the middle of the night.
The Race for Anzhou
Meanwhile, Lord Yu and Madam Yu turn their attention to the vacant Anzhou Salt Censor post, recognizing that whoever succeeds there first will become the model for reform empire-wide, a launchpad straight back to real influence at court.
They agree the position has to go to Yu Jingxiu. They agree that Lord Yu will handle the political lobbying and Madam Yu will manage everything behind the scenes. Fan Yake, hearing the plan, sees her opening and offers to lean on her friendship with Tian Wanyi. Her husband Wei Donglin sits as Left Vice Minister of Personnel, and she hopes to convince her to get Yu Jingxiu’s name submitted directly and skip Zhao Ling’s process entirely. Madam Yu agrees and backs her financially, though privately she can’t shake the sense that Fan Yake’s overeager and lacking discipline.
Madam Yu also pulls her son aside, scolding him for neglecting Fan Yake, pointedly reminding him of everything his wife endured giving birth to their son, and urges him to focus purely on his career while the family handles the rest.
He agrees dutifully and retreats to his study, only to discover his hidden magnolia paintings gone, a servant confirming his mother had recently been through the room. Realizing she’s now seen straight through his lingering feelings for Tingyun, the walls of his own home start to feel that much tighter.
Determined not to fail, Fan Yake swallows her pride and pays Tian Wanyi a visit.
Reunions and a New Candidate
Madam Wang and the other northwest wives arrive in the capital, and Tingyun leads a welcoming party for them. Sen, dressed sharply and freshly groomed, waits eagerly for Second Young Lady Wang, the two trading unmistakable glances under Madam Wang’s watchful eye. Amongst other things, he tells her that his feelings toward Zhao Ling remain complicated, missing him deeply while still feeling intimidated, much like how she describes her own relationship with her father.
Later, he presents her with a bow he spent three nights hand-crafting from roe deer sinew. Embarrassed, he runs off and she laments why he would give a gift like that to a girl.
While the group talks, Madam Wang brings up the open Censor post, arguing the northwest needs someone who’ll genuinely protect its interests. She recommends Shen Congsi, Tingyun’s own sister-in-law’s brother, and hands over his essay on frontier salt and grain reform. It warns that abandoning the grain-exchange system too abruptly would leave border granaries dangerously empty in an emergency. It strikes Tingyun as exactly the kind of measured thinking this post actually needs.
Family Ties, Family Confusion
At the Xie family shop, Tingyun meets her sister-in-law Fu Shenshi and lays out her plan to back Shen Congsi’s nomination, offering in return to let Fu Shenshi manage the family’s capital shops and ease her financial strain. Moved by how well Tingyun’s cared for her mother, Fu Shenshi agrees to help and promises to write to her brother, hoping his return might also smooth things over within the wider family.
Back at the Fu residence, Fu Shenshi mentions to Fifth Master Fu that Tingyun’s putting forward a relative on merit for the post, and he immediately, gleefully assumes he’s the one being nominated, cutting her off repeatedly before she can correct him, already lost in fantasies of returning to officialdom after seven long years.
Tingyun brings up Shen Congsi’s name to Zhao Ling over tea meant to sober him up. Tingyun gets a firm no. He respects the man’s talent, but points out he was demoted after his palace exam essay offended powerful officials. Also, the Emperor wants a bold reformer for this role, someone already on his finalized list. He asks her plainly not to push it further.
Fighting for the Northwest Anyway
Refusing to give up on protecting the garrisons’ interests, Tingyun looks for another way in. Fan Yake, meanwhile, hosts a rabbit racing game among the noblewomen, rigging it so Tian Wanyi’s rabbit wins. She is hoping to leverage the goodwill to ask her to add Yu Jingxiu’s name to the Ministry’s recommendation list, a request Tian Wanyi agrees to.
Tingyun, taking her own alternate route, visits the retired imperial tutor Master Zhao at Tanshui Temple. Over a game of weiqi, she remarks dryly that the temple sees no less foot traffic than any government ministry, and Master Zhao, catching her meaning immediately, asks what she’s really there for.
Backfiring Ambitions
Word reaches Madam Yu that the official recommendation list now includes both Yu Jingxiu and Shen Congsi, and furious her son isn’t the sole name on it, she tears into Fan Yake for failing the one task she volunteered to do.
Fan Yake confronts Tian Wanyi over what feels like a broken promise, only to be reminded, mockingly, that the rabbit prize was just a game, never a binding deal for exclusivity, and that Yu Jingxiu can still win fairly on his own merit if he’s actually capable.
Cornered and desperate, Fan Yake pivots to Madam Wu with a new, uglier scheme, offering her niece Miss Wu as a secret mistress to Wei Donglin himself, reasoning that influence over him could still steer the recommendation their way. Sensing suspicion, Fan Yake lays out the entire plan openly rather than hiding it, and it’s enough to win Madam Wu over.
Fan Yake’s overthinking and low self-esteem never let her read a room correctly, and once again she overcorrects straight into failure. Now she’s going to enrage Madam Wei by offering up a concubine for her husband, an astonishingly poor call. I’m curious whether this ends up earning her Madam Yu’s grudging approval or her full wrath. Either way, watching her and her husband slowly drive Madam Yu up the wall is deeply satisfying.
A Girl Reduced to a Vessel
Madam Wu brings Miss Wu to Tanshui Temple to meet Wei Donglin’s mother, presenting her niece as ideal for bearing children. The old woman pressures her son into taking Miss Wu on as a secret outside mistress, complaining that Tian Wanyi’s given them only one daughter and refuses more now that her own father’s retiring.
Wei Donglin, more than happy to indulge himself, agrees to keep Miss Wu on the side and elevate her standing if she gives him a son. Overhearing the entire exchange, Miss Wu is devastated, realizing she’s viewed as nothing more than a means to an heir, and resolves she has to find a way out of this life before it swallows her whole.
The Road to Splendor Episode 22 Recap: My Thoughts
I was so happy to see Zhao Ling and Tingyun finally talk through their feelings in this episode. The banter along the way was so much fun too, Tingyun’s cute fury paired with him faking illness just to hold her hand was lovely, proving that even when they’re clashing on the surface, they’re still deeply connected underneath it all.
I’d love for Zhao Ling to step back and actually look at what’s happening around him, but he’s so consumed by his climb that he’s missing so much, and it’s clearly wearing Tingyun down alongside him. I don’t want it to take something disastrous to knock that into him, but something has to give eventually, he’s handing his enemies far too much ammunition as it is. I’m looking forward to the point where they finally find their footing in these murky waters, the adjustment period is brutal, and waiting for things to click into place is testing my patience, but I suppose that’s just how life goes.
Having the Ganlin Town crew back in the mix has been such a joy too, our little wives’ club is a delight, and once Madam Mo joins them, the whole group will finally be complete.
