A Lucky Dumpling
For New Year’s Eve, Zheng Sanniang gathers the household to make dumplings, secretly hiding a coin inside one marked with eighteen pleats, hoping to lift Tingyun’s spirits with a little symbolic luck. Zhao Ling overhears the whole plan while standing outside.
At dinner, Tingyun’s too low to eat much, so he forces down her portion himself, only for Sen to accidentally end up with the lucky coin instead. Realizing what’s happened, Zhao Ling rushes outside and throws up.
Following him in concern, Tingyun watches him ask, unable to meet her eyes, whether she regrets any of this. She admits she does, not the marriage itself, but pushing him toward this political ladder purely to chase her own ambitions. She’s since let those desires go, but he only picked them up in her place, and neither of them is the person they used to be. If she could go back seven years, she’d rather have fled with him to the edge of the world than live as Lord and Lady Zhao.
Pulling her into a tight embrace, he begs her not to leave, insisting he needs nothing more from her than her simply staying. Weeping, convinced her presence only brings him more grief, she proposes divorce. Terrified, and assuming she genuinely can’t bear the sight of him anymore, he invents an excuse to stay overnight at the office instead, leaving her sobbing alone.
The poison of the imperial court is well and truly shattering this couple. Killing his own father-in-law in revenge for her mother, then executing General Mo to secure her safety, has eaten away every ounce of humanity this man has left. She’s watching him die inside slowly, and she can’t seem to reach him.
A Family Coming Apart
Behind his parents’ backs, Yu Jingxiu secures a minor post in Ganlin Town through the Ministry of Personnel. When his father finds out, a fierce argument breaks out, and Madam Yu cuts it short before it escalates, having Fan Yake and Concubine Wu lead him away while she works to calm her husband and promises to change her son’s mind herself.
Escorting him back to his room, Fan Yake, surprised by the transfer, offers to go with him and live as an ordinary couple in Ganlin Town. He rejects her outright, mocking her for chasing wealth and marriage her whole life, insisting she’d never actually give up her comforts for real freedom. He adds, cruelly, that even if she truly wanted to come, he’d never allow it, preferring to keep her trapped exactly where she is.
Madam Yu confronts him separately, warning that if he dares leave for Ganlin Town alone, she’ll make sure Tingyun pays for it with her life if she stays in the capital. Stunned by his own mother’s ruthlessness, he reflects bitterly on what a fitting couple his parents actually make, one using him, the other threatening him outright.
Madam Yu, you’re only growing more ruthless as this show heads toward its end, though I suppose desperation demands it. What makes this even sadder is that her real motive is purely about the Yu family not losing face in the capital. When it comes to how his own family treats him, I do feel for Yu Jingxiu, honestly.
A Forged Invitation
Desperate to get his way, Yu Jingxiu steals a hairpin from Concubine Wu and forges an invitation to Tingyun in her name. Believing it genuinely comes from Concubine Wu, given an old favour between them over a ledger, Tingyun agrees to the meeting, only to find Yu Jingxiu waiting instead, declaring his love again and begging her to run away with him to Ganlin Town.
She shuts him down hard, telling him plainly this is obsession, not love, and reminding him she’s already married. He insists she’s misunderstood him entirely, that he’s willing to give up every title, every fortune, to become a commoner just to be with her. When she and Zheng Sanniang try to leave, he knocks out Sanniang and drugs Tingyun and take her away.
A Trap and a Confession
Learning what’s happened, Concubine Wu goes to Fan Yake, framing it as Yu Jingxiu keeping a secret mistress, urging her to catch him in the act, genuinely desperate to stop him from leaving for Ganlin without her, fearing Madam Yu will otherwise cast her aside. Indifferent to the marriage itself but hoping the scandal might throw the Yu family into further chaos, Fan Yake follows the lead, only to discover the “mistress” is Tingyun.
Expecting Tingyun to gloat over Yu Jingxiu’s long obsession, Fan Yake instead gets total indifference. With a bitter laugh, she pities herself for wasting a lifetime jealous over something Tingyun clearly never wanted at all. She reveals the full truth about Fifth Madam Fu’s death, refusing to let Tingyun misplace her hatred any longer, then presses a gold hairpin to her own throat, threatening suicide to force the guards to let Tingyun go free.
Finally, Fan Yake. The fog’s lifted, and she’s seeing clearly at last. All this time, she genuinely believed his love was mutual. This one act of honesty, telling Tingyun the truth about her mother’s death, might just be the thing that finally starts to heal things between Zhao Ling and Tingyun.
A Rescue and a Reunion
Waking to find Tingyun gone, Zheng Sanniang alerts Zhao Ling immediately, and Sen tracks down Yu Jingxiu’s recently leased residence. On the road, they cross paths with Tingyun fleeing on her own. Zhao Ling leaps from the carriage, pulls her into his arms, wraps his cloak around her, and takes her up the mountain, revealing he’d already arranged an entire escape route for her.
Since their marriage was an imperial arrangement that could only end in death otherwise, he explains, her supposed abduction gives her the perfect cover to disappear for good, a carriage, funds, horses, everything ready so she can live safely, far from whatever ruin his future might bring. His only wish in marrying her, he tells her, was her happiness, and since she isn’t happy, he’s ready to let her go.
Tingyun tells him she now knows the truth about her mother’s death, and she refuses to run. Unwilling to let him shoulder this burden alone, she declares she doesn’t want him to be a weapon, a tool, or anyone’s Huchen, only her husband. She kisses him to prove it. With everything finally out in the open, they head home together.
In the carriage, he rests his head in her lap, admitting to the nightmares that never seem to stop, and she strokes his hair gently, promising to protect him for as long as she’s able.
Choosing Freedom
Back at the estate, Fan Yake confronts Yu Jingxiu the moment he returns. She’s finally seen through the whole family’s hypocrisy, him walking on eggshells around his mother, his mother placating his father, herself exhausting an entire lifetime trying to please everyone in turn.
She realizes now that his belief she was dull and unremarkable, easily lost in a crowd, says more about his own emptiness than hers, she was one of a kind long before their marriage ever happened. She tells him plainly he’s living a life built on obsession and self-deception, and declares she’s done living in anyone’s shadow.
She gathers her father’s books and prepares to leave for good. Learning of it, Madam Yu rushes to stop her, dangling her son as leverage to force her to stay. Fan Yake refuses entirely, unwilling to become the kind of mother who claims everything is done for her child’s good while turning him into just another puppet.
Since Madam Yu never managed real love herself, she asks pointedly, why demand it of her. Even if the world brands her unfit, she’s ready to bear that shame. The words cut deep enough that Madam Yu finally steps aside and lets her walk out.
If every mother is forced to swallow her own grievances for a lifetime, their children will never truly know happiness. I fear one day I might say those exact words myself, “I did it all for you,” and I never want to become that kind of mother.
The Road to Splendor Episode 32 Recap: My Thoughts
I honestly wanted to cry watching this found family try so hard to bring this couple back together, secretly hiding a coin in dumplings just to give them a reason to talk. It’s come to this, needing a New Year’s tradition to force a conversation between them. Tingyun couldn’t even eat, and we were all rooting for her to find that coin, only for her to give up after a couple of bites.
Enter distressed Zhao Ling, gobbling down everything she couldn’t finish, silently begging each dumpling to be the lucky one, not because he was hungry, but because he needed it to mean something. Watching him gag and finally throw up from forcing down that much food was almost comical if it wasn’t so sad. And then Sen finding the actual coin, completely by accident, was hilariously awkward, he tried giving it away and it just kept landing back in his hands.
But the whole ordeal did finally push our couple into an honest conversation, and it went badly. Zhao Ling telling her she can do anything except leave him was such a raw moment, and then Tingyun, after making me tear up asking what she could do to help him feel alive again, turns around and suggests divorce instead.
Really? I wanted to throw something at my screen. Watching Zhao Ling physically lose his footing, like his own heart just dropped out from under him, was so hard to watch, and so well acted. They were clearly not even on the same page anymore, not the same chapter, not the same book. Him not even looking back as he walked away said everything.
Meanwhile, the Yu family arc was excellent to watch this episode, Yu Jingxiu’s desperation, Fan Yake’s awakening, a whole family unravelling at the seams. It took Tingyun actually being kidnapped for the walls between our leads to finally crack. I did enjoy watching Fan Yake finally say her piece to that husband of hers and drag him back to reality.
And who would’ve thought Fan Yake, of all people, would be the one to actually break through the walls between our couple. Telling Tingyun the truth about her mother’s death, freeing her from that misplaced hatred, was a huge moment.
When she told Madam Yu she refused to become that kind of mother, it clearly struck something real. Still, her decision to leave her own son behind is hard to sit with, no matter how she justifies it. Ji may grow up comfortable, but he’s still being left to a loveless father and grandparents who’ll likely repeat the exact same pattern on him that they did on their own son.
At least Tingyun made it out safe and found her way back to her husband. After two brutal episodes and most of this one following the same devastating path, I wasn’t sure how much longer I could watch this couple spiral. Thankfully, they’ve reconnected at last, pulled back together by the truth about Fifth Madam Fu’s murder. I’m hoping Tingyun can help pull him out of this depression so they can finally get back to building the life they always wanted.
