A Fiery Escape
Locked away by Yu Jingxiu, Tingyun sets the room ablaze herself, forcing the guards into a panic to put out the flames while she slips out unseen in the confusion. Yu Jingxiu orders an immediate search, but the war drums are already sounding across Ganlin Town, and Yumen Pass is set to close within three days. His servant refuse to risk their lives chasing his personal obsession, and they drag him away, leaving him to abandon the pursuit in bitter frustration.
A Farewell Written, Not Spoken
Sen searches frantically for Yang Yucheng among the departing troops, finding only his blade left behind. Confronting Zhao Ling, he demands to know what happened. Unable to say the words out loud, Zhao Ling simply sets down a farewell letter addressed to Tingyun before marching forward. Sen deduces on his own what happened to Yucheng and the full weight of the sacrifice hits him and he breaks down.
Reaching the prison, Tingyun finds it empty. A guard tells her the historical bamboo slips she’d restored had helped rally the troops’ morale, clearing Zhao Ling’s name and reinstating him, but the army has already moved out.
She runs after the troops in the harsh desert and she struggles to keep up and collapses. She sees the soldiers in the distance and tries to call out to Zhao Ling but to no avail. She removes her red scarf and waves it in the air and as it billows in the wind, Zhao Ling sees her. He turns to find her, steps out of line of the troops for formation and waves goodbye. Happy that he managed to see her for one last moment, he falls back in line.
The score does so much of the emotional work here, swelling as the army marches through the desert while she says goodbye in that striking red against the dunes. It’s one of the most visually stunning scenes the show has given us, and knowing they never got a real goodbye only deepens the ache.
His letter carries a five-year promise, to win real distinction on the battlefield and come home to give her the future she deserves, and in her heart, she resolves to wait for him faithfully. I’m so glad Tingyun’s finally come to understand exactly how much she loves him and what a real, devoted marriage actually looks like.
Five Years, Quietly Lived
Tingyun builds a full life in Ganlin Town over those years. She takes General Mo’s child as her godson, opens a women’s school, keeps restoring bamboo slips, and improves the army’s uniforms, earning three separate honours in the local council along the way.
Sen trains diligently in the yard with his staff, while Zheng San and Zheng Sanniang keep the household running smoothly. Letters travel back and forth between her and the front, Tingyun sharing every small detail of daily life, Zhao Ling writing back that thinking of her is the only thing keeping him alive through the bloodshed.
Watching Sen grow into a young man was such a bittersweet thing to witness, that particular ache of watching someone you love grow up right in front of you.
Back to the Capital
Word arrives of a major border victory, and Zhao Ling is promoted to assistant commander of the northwest, summoned to the capital for imperial honours. Tingyun immediately prepares to follow.
What she doesn’t know is that his real mission in the capital is far more dangerous, a secret imperial order to root out officials embezzling military funds. To keep her out of his enemies’ crosshairs, Zhao Ling publicly claims he’s still unmarried. Once he arrives, he moves fast, arresting Li Mao, now the Director of the Revenue Division, and accusing him outright of embezzling silver during his time overseeing Gandu Circuit.
Li Mao lashes out, insisting an assistant commander has no authority to arrest a court official without a full trial before the Three Judicial Offices, cursing Zhao Ling and threatening retaliation against everyone close to him. Zhao Ling doesn’t flinch, pointing out that having no family and no faction to protect means he has nothing left to lose in seeing this through to the end.
A Quiet Reunion
Outside the city, Tingyun reunites with her mother, who’s clearly moved to see how much her daughter’s grown and endured. She urges Tingyun to face whatever’s coming standing united with Zhao Ling, and mentions that her father remains quietly in mourning at a hut on the outskirts of the capital.
Settling into capital life, Tingyun sets her sights on a residence in Shijia Hutong, near the Imperial Academy. Learning Fan Yake has already claimed interest in the same property to open a school for Master Fan, Tingyun tries to convince the agent Otherwise. She mentions that settling northwest military families in the area would bring far greater long term benefit to the neighbourhood and more sales for the agent.
A Trap of Words
Not long after, Tingyun attends a literary gathering at Wanfang Garden, hosted by Tian Wanyi and Fan Yake. While Fan Yake lectures on Master Fan’s writing and boasts about her courtship with Yu Jingxiu, Tingyun quietly plants a seed of doubt with Tian Wanyi. She points out that Fan Yake’s school plans would eventually push her out of the whole venture entirely. Displeased, Tian Wanyi pulls her promised funding on the spot.
Forgery Uncovered
Reviewing the property paperwork for the Shijia Hutong house, Tingyun notices something off, the deed claims to be twenty years old, but the paper it’s printed on was only made last year. Recognizing the forgery, she has Zheng San deliver it straight to Zhao Ling at the Ministry of Justice prison, and with this solid proof in hand, he presses Li Mao into a full confession, one that names his co-conspirators too.
A Birthday Ruined
On Tingyun’s birthday, Zhao Ling buys the rose pastries she’s always loved, meaning to surprise her, only to be ambushed by masked assassins on the street. He fights them off but takes a wound, the pastries destroyed in the process. Knowing that showing up now would only put her in danger, he orders his men to keep the attack quiet and stays away entirely.
I understand his reasoning, but it’s painful imagining how confused and worried Tingyun must be, not understanding why he’s staying away. Five years of quiet devotion, and now this kind of silence must be agonizing for her.
He ends up sitting under a tree across from her window, quietly bandaging his own wound while watching her silhouette against a backdrop of distant fireworks. I did wonder if he’d arranged those fireworks himself, but it doesn’t seem like it.
A Cold Calculation
At the Yu estate, Madam Yu learns from the prison overseer’s wife that Li Mao is close to breaking. Glancing at a caged bird, she remarks with total detachment that any tongue prone to causing trouble should be cut out before it does real damage.
Back in the capital, Zhao Ling’s carving out a dark, ruthless reputation for himself, and honestly, Li Mao earned every bit of what’s coming to him after everything he’s pulled. I loved watching his own men look at him like they wanted to tear him apart.
Words That Land
“You are my anchor,” he tells her. “My love for you has not wavered,” she answers back. Such swoon worthy lines, framed with so much sincerity, who wouldn’t be completely won over hearing devotion put into words like that.

Tingyun setting fire to her own room to escape rather than waiting to be rescued is such a satisfying subversion of the usual damsel trope, proof of exactly how sharp and tactical she really is. She never waits for saving, she engineers her own way out of the chaos, which makes her feel like the perfect match for Zhao Ling rather than just his counterpart.
And that strength always comes wrapped in real grace, rather than the usual trope where a female lead has to be either unnaturally tough or loudly all-knowing to read as capable. She’s such a refreshing kind of heroine.
Zhao Ling’s stoicism when Sen confronts him over Yucheng’s blade reads less like coldness and more like armour, the quiet discipline of a man who’s learned that in a world this corrupt, showing emotion just gets people killed.
That confrontation hit with real, earned emotional weight, proof of just how strong the chemistry between this cast really is. And can we talk about him in his red ministerial robes? The black cloak, the gloves, that menacing look and smirk, the way he walks into a room like he owns it, the cape movement. Whoever added those gloves to his costume deserves a raise, there’s something about them that makes every gesture feel like a quiet display of power.
Yu Jingxiu getting physically dragged away by colleagues who care more about their own survival than his obsession is such a satisfying, almost poetic way to show just how hollow his political power actually is.
The fire itself works as a clever visual metaphor too, Tingyun’s escape burning away the last remnants of their old life in Ganlin Town right as the story pivots into its capital arc.
I was sad watching our couple miss each other again, but I understand exactly why. I trust these two completely at this point, they know each other too well for that trust to waver. There’s a bigger plan in motion here, and the timing just isn’t right yet.
In an era so saturated with AI generated content, it means so much watching a production actually commit to shooting on real locations. That desert sequence was breathtaking, and watching the behind-the-scenes footage, it clearly wasn’t easy to pull off. I’m grateful people still care about that kind of authenticity; understanding that we are spoilt by big budgets.
