The Road To Splendor Episode 10 Recap

He accepts, and the whole crew, Sen, Yang Yucheng, Zheng Sanniang and her reunited husband, sets off with them for Ganlin Town, where their arrival immediately runs into local politics, jealousy, and a decidedly cold reception from Commander Wang.

Whispers at the Card Table

Over a game of cards, wealthy ladies gossip about the Yan family’s complete collapse and Madam Yu’s bedridden state, blaming it all on Fan Yake’s disastrous scandal. Tian Wanyi stays quiet, redirecting the conversation back to the game.

A Missing Sum

Reviewing the accounts, Tingyun spots a discrepancy, three thousand taels missing from the fortune Zhao Ling supposedly surrendered in full. She warns him plainly, keeping it could cost him his life and everything he owns. He brushes her off, telling her to worry about herself instead now that she’s headed back to the capital. Stung by how easily he dismisses her concern, she leaves him to it. Zheng Sanniang, watching her pack, asks whether she can really bear to leave him behind. Tingyun doesn’t answer.

A Reward, and a Real Plan

Mr. Zhao arrives on the prince’s behalf, offering Tingyun a reward for her help cracking the salt case, and asking for her assistance convincing Zhao Ling to formally join the army. The commission, he explains, is really just a cover to give Zhao Ling a legitimate new identity, with the prince planning to eventually bring him to the capital as a trusted aide, once he suitably moves up the ranks.

She agrees to help. Packing that night, she finds the missing three thousand taels tucked quietly into her own luggage. It moves her to tears.

A Proposal

Before the prince, Tingyun asks for a single reward, a new, independent household register under her mother’s surname, Xie, since her original family status was stripped when the Fu name fell. She needs this legal footing to eventually marry Zhao Ling properly. He grants it without hesitation.

Zhao Ling returns to the residence only to find that Tingyun is still there. As a surprising turn of events, Tingyun proposes to Zhao Ling and asks for his hand in marriage. The ensuing scene is hilarious. He is completely taken by surprise and even tries to physically distance himself from her.

She believes that if they get married, they can all be together including Sen. Zhao Ling is not happy that Sen also gets a mention in what is supposed to be their betrothal. Hah!

Ultimately, Tingyun is pitching a marriage of alliance. She tries to convince him again about the army and this union would mean they could all go together and build something long lasting. She also offers the three thousand taels back as her betrothal gift.

Zhao Ling is ultimately disappointed that this proposal was more of a business merger than a romantic pursuit. She understands that what she is proposing was sudden so she tells him to think it over and promises she’ll only ask once.

No doubt Zhao Ling is completely thrown for six. A dual life changing decision dangled before him. He looks at the cup of tea and ponders if he should accept.

A Wedding Without Fanfare

Fan Yake’s wedding day is small and sparse, her maid grumbling about the lack of grandeur while Fan Yake convinces herself marrying into the Yu family is victory enough on its own. Privately, Madam Yu warns Yu Jingxiu that his new wife’s recklessness nearly destroyed the family, revealing that Tingyun used the flower cakes to blackmail a confession out of her, permanent leverage now sitting in a rival’s hands.

She frames it as simple concern rather than manipulation, even as she hands him the rare manuscripts Fan Yake had secretly pawned, freshly bought back, urging him to return them to his bride. She insists she isn’t trying to sow discord between them, which of course is exactly what she’s doing, there’s no real upside for her in sharing any of this with her son otherwise.

Learning his wife sold off her own father’s treasured books for cash leaves Yu Jingxiu quietly disillusioned, the image of a pure, principled woman cracking. He then questions where or not he had made a mistake in marrying Fan Yake.

Madam Yu also has a servant deliver a pointed message to Lady Fu of the Zuo family, hinting at an old acquaintance’s coming visit and dangling financial help should she ever need it.

Deciding on the Army

Talking it over with Sen, Zhao Ling concludes it doesn’t matter whether Tingyun’s proposal is strategy or genuine feeling, either way it’s a partnership worth taking, even if it means he’s marrying into the Xie name. He drinks the tea in agreement.

Having audience with the Crown Prince, Zhao Ling commits to joining the army, choosing Ganlin Town specifically since General Mo is stationed there. General Mo teases that Zhao Ling clearly just missed him too much to go anywhere else. Considering how these two actually first crossed paths, that little joke lands better than it have any right to.

There’s a lovely, unguarded moment here too, Zhao Ling looking at Tingyun with something close to open adoration before catching himself the second the prince starts speaking again. Pleased that they have accepted post but had turned down a wedding gift, the prince grants them a hundred mu of land in Ganlin Town instead, promising real advancement once Zhao Ling makes battalion commander.

A Letter Home

Tingyun writes to her mother explaining her decision to take the Xie name and marry Zhao Ling, describing him as loyal and brave. Reading it, Madam Fu weeps, joy and worry tangled together.

Before leaving, the two share a farewell drink, toasting to the family they intend to build, her promising to trust him completely, him vowing never to let her down. And finally, there are no more misconstrued agendas as they embark on a new future together.

Power in the Shadows

In her hidden vault of gold and silver, Madam Yu makes clear the wealth itself means nothing to her, real power lies in quietly dismantling her rivals. With Lord Yan arrested and Grand Secretary Liu implicated, a seat has opened up for her own husband. Fan Yake’s scandal, in her eyes, was actually useful, diverting attention away from the Yu family entirely. Real success, she reasons, means staying invisible, unlike Madam Yan, whose downfall came from being too visible and too disconnected from her own husband.

Ten episodes in, and this show is still deeply, deliberately cantered on women, strong, calculating women, quietly proving that the real power in this world was never the kind anyone could see.

Elsewhere, Lady Fu of the Zuo family, mid-scolding a maid over a shortened skirt, receives Madam Yu’s letter. Bringing her back into the story now feels like a clear signal that worse is still coming.

Departure

Tingyun packs with real care, even digging up her favourite flowers from the courtyard to bring along. Zheng Sanniang reunites with her long-lost husband, Zheng San, and both pledge themselves to serving her faithfully. Yang Yucheng and his mother arrive to say goodbye, and when Zhao Ling invites him to join the army too, promising to eventually bring his mother to Ganlin Town as well, Yucheng is overwhelmed and accepts.

Zhao Ling also hands his local salt business over to Jin Yuanbao, who promises loyalty and diligence in return.

This was such a lovely scene to watch, every past grudge finally closed, everyone welcomed back into the fold. Zhao Ling’s slowly building his own found family here, and it’s clearly going to matter a great deal as the story moves forward. I’m a sucker for a good feel-good moment like this.

Watching them leave, Madam Yu notes privately how out of place their refined belongings will look in such a harsh new environment, predicting they’ll repeat Madam Yan’s exact mistake of trying to stay delicate in the mud.

Trouble in Ganlin Town

Arriving in town, Zhao Ling heads straight to the yamen to register his new post while the others settle in. General Mo, ambushed on the street by his impatient concubine, Lady Lu, panics at the thought of his wife and Commander Wang’s wife spotting her, and shoves her into Tingyun’s carriage, begging for cover. Lady Lu, assuming Tingyun’s just another concubine, condescendingly demands proper deference.

Madam Mo and Madam Wang greet Tingyun warmly at the gate, admiring her beauty, and she gifts them delicate velvet flowers as a gesture of goodwill. Peering out from hiding, Lady Lu grows jealous and starts digging through Tingyun’s boxes, accidentally knocking one of the flowers to the ground. Caught retrieving it, Tingyun quickly covers by claiming she’d lent it to her, but Madam Mo, insulted by even the implied association, rips the flower from her own hair and storms off.

Not the smoothest welcome to Ganlin Town. She’s going to have some real diplomacy ahead of her to win these women over.

Meanwhile, Zhao Ling waits outside the military camp for four hours. Inside, Advisor Li tries flattering Commander Wang with a legendary bow, only for the commander to redirect it to a soldier instead. When General Mo formally introduces Zhao Ling as the new Banner Commander, Commander Wang, despite clearly recognizing the weight behind his visiting card, stays cold and dismissive, sending the bow to General Mo’s own estate rather than acknowledging him properly. Undeterred, Zhao Ling simply turns and walks off while the others settle in to drink, leaving the commander staring after him.

The Road to Splendor Episode 10 Recap: My Thoughts

I loved the accounting confrontation between Tingyun and Zhao Ling over the missing three thousand taels, it’s such a sharp, realistic beat, giving her a moment of real pragmatic intelligence rather than letting her fall into naive romance-lead territory.

That proposal scene caught me completely off guard, and I loved that the show went there. It’s a clever way to finally push these two toward the romance we’ve all been waiting for, and given the era, a man willingly marrying into a woman’s household would’ve been seen as demeaning, which makes Zhao Ling’s willingness feel like real character growth. Her promise to help build a family they could truly call their own, sealed with that shared drink, cements the trust between them beautifully.

It’s so refreshing watching a period drama where the royal characters actually behave decently. This far in, the Sixteenth Prince remains an upstanding, fair man who doesn’t abuse his power, and whatever he’s got planned for Zhao Ling’s future feels like it’s going to matter a lot going forward.

The cinematography continues to be a genuine standout too, everything from the lavish interior chambers to the stark, desolate desert landscapes feels equally deliberate and gorgeous. The costume work this episode also deserves real praise, the level of period detail and richness in colour makes the whole production feel cinematic.

And I have to say, I’m liking Deng Enxi more with every episode, she’s such a talented actress.
