The Early Spring Episode 6 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

THE FIRST CUP OF OSMANTHUS MILK

Zhitao transfers away from Luan Nian’s team to protect her career, only to end up right back at his door chasing crucial files for a client crisis. A drunken night, an unexpected second kiss, and a morning full of playful teasing keep pulling them back into each other’s orbit, even as both insist nothing real is happening.

Trading a Bag for Bread

Luan Nian asks for a loaf of bread in exchange for taking the designer bag, and she accepts without further discussion. Talking it through with Sun Yu later, she mentions spotting an entire trunk of similar gift boxes in his car, more evidence, she figures, that this is just how he buys silence when things get messy or gifts for all the women in his life.

Feeling foolish for reading too much into that night, and dreading the awkwardness of facing him at work, she leans on the misattribution of arousal theory to rationalize the whole thing away, convincing herself the intense feelings during a moment of danger she had during the mudslide were never really about him at all.

Sun Yu encourages her to just focus on her career, and Zhitao resolves to grow up fast and set real boundaries going forward.

A Transfer

Determined to keep her distance, she applies for a transfer to Division Two through HR. When group leader Alex hears about it, he goes to Luan Nian for a read on her before deciding whether to accept.

Luan Nian initially refuses to vet her on his behalf, but once Alex threatens to reject the transfer outright, he offers a surprisingly generous evaluation, admitting she isn’t naturally gifted, but she’s patient, hardworking, resilient, and quietly ambitious. Alex, taken aback by the praise, approves her transfer.

On her first day with the new team, Luan Nian corners her early, asking outright whether the transfer was a way to avoid him and why she isnโ€™t using the bag he bought her. She doesnโ€™t think her bag is old and is perfectly fine to use while she also assures him that since sheโ€™s already accepted the gift she will her word to stay quiet about that night, and insists her work will speak for itself. Luan Nian comes to the realisation that the genuine intention of the gift was misconstrued.

Lumi tries to talk her into staying in Luan Nian’s group instead, reminding her how he protected her from drinking in Guangzhou and pulled her out of the mudslide, but Zhitao holds firm and heads off to her new team’s meeting.

Settling Into a New Role

Her mentor Annie assigns her to take official meeting minutes and, noticing her Excel skills, tasks her with building a profit and loss spreadsheet and pivot chart by day’s end. During a break, colleague Li Tianran, clocks who she is, the injured employee Luan Nian went to bat for after the mudslide, and she confirms it plainly.

Late in the night, Annie later reminds her that Alex expects meeting minutes by the end of the day, and warns her to stay guarded and avoid getting too close with other teams.

At home, she’s overwhelmed trying to keep up with all the unfamiliar industry jargon in English, and Sun Yuanzhu, noticing her struggle, gifts her an English-Chinese dictionary he’d picked up from a street stall. The roommates end up bonding over dinner, trading complaints about their own workdays and teasing her over having to be back at the office the next morning while they get the day off.

A Files Crisis

Trouble hits fast when Qipai, Division Twoโ€™s major client, rejects the revised proposals outright, demanding Luan Nian’s original concept paired with their lower pricing. Cornered, Alex and Annie send Zhitao to ask Luan Nian for the original source files, hoping her prior working relationship might help.

He shuts her down flat, accusing her of being sent as Alex’s pawn and mocking her for having no real boundaries, though he does offer, almost as a dare, to take her back into his own group if she’d rather leave Division Two altogether. Meanwhile, Li Tianran tries the same approach with Lumi, who tears into him in the hallway for expecting a free handoff after poaching the account entirely.

Zhitao tries smoothing things over with a small cake for Lumi, who turns it down and warns her plainly, Luan Nian is the only one with the raw files, and she’d be smart to step away from this assignment before it damages her standing for good.

A Client Kept, Regardless

Elsewhere, General Manager Lin meets Luan Nian for a game of squash to talk through the interdepartmental friction, and Luan Nian promises Qipai will stay within the company no matter which team ends up managing it. Impressed by his bigger-picture thinking, Lin invites him to an upcoming industry awards ceremony, promising introductions to several major clients.

Back home, watching Zhitao agonize over the missing files, Sun Yu tells her to stop overthinking the emotional side of things entirely and just focus on getting what she needs to protect her job.

A Drunken Night

Taking that advice, Zhitao waits outside Luan Nian’s apartment late that night. He shows up heavily drunk, has her punch in the door code, and lets them inside. As she’s helping settle him down on the couch, he pulls her into a tight embrace on the couch, and in his drunken state, kisses her again.

She spends the rest of the night looking after him, cleaning up after he’s sick, changing his clothes, washing everything that got dirty in the process, telling herself the whole time that anyone this drunk isn’t really thinking clearly, and that proximity alone can make anyone seem more appealing than they actually are in the moment. Kiss two, technically, though she’s determined not to read anything into it.

A Misunderstanding, and the Files at Last

The next morning, he wakes her up and she tells him what happened. Without a word of gratitude, he heads straight for the shower. Without any mention of the files, and assuming her trip was a failure, she borrows his jacket for warmth since her own clothes are still wet, and quietly leaves.

As she walks out of his apartment complex, he calls, claiming his home safe was broken into and a diamond’s gone missing. Panicked, she rushes back to explain she only took the jacket out of necessity, only to find out he was simply teasing her.

He asks her if she has a USB drive and he proceeds to download the Qipai sources files for her. He tells her to wait forty minutes for the transfer, and in exchange for the files, he assigns her to format a final slide deck by ten.

While she works, he dries her clothes and makes breakfast including a cup of osmanthus milk. They share a cab to the office, where he reviews her slide layout, offers real advice on luxury positioning and visual tone, and tells her, that she really ought to get her driver’s license.

Right before they arrive, she asks to be dropped off early to avoid office gossip, and though he teases her for the paranoia, he agrees. When she finally hands the files over to Alex, he looks at her differently, clearly recognizing she holds more real influence with Luan Nian than he’d assumed.

The Early Spring Episode 6 Recap: My Thoughts

This episode leans hard into the clichรฉ of the rich, successful man who couldn’t possibly want more than a fling with someone this simple and inexperienced. Zhitao genuinely hoped for something real, and convinces herself she was wrong to, leaning hard into an “I’m strong, I can handle this” persona and insisting to herself the whole thing was a mistake.

Luan Nian seems just as conflicted, half convinced she left the bag behind on purpose to engineer another meeting, maybe exhausted by the games women tend to play around him given his reputation for coldness. He’s confused by his own feelings too, which makes his behaviour read as messy rather than calculated.

Rather than pining after her boss, Zhitao reasons through her own feelings using real psychology, and applying for that transfer feels like an assertion of boundaries, proof she isn’t just a submissive rookie letting things happen to her.

That scene where Luan Nian evaluates her to Alex does quiet, important work too, admitting she isn’t naturally brilliant but resilient and driven anchors the show’s whole thesis, that you don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of real affection. His appreciation clearly isn’t shallow, he sees the grit underneath, which is exactly what makes this slow burn feel believable.

The office confrontation, him accusing her outright of using the transfer and the bag as calculated career moves, is genuinely divisive, and it’s understandable why some found it harsh. But the friction works because it reads as a wounded man’s defence mechanism rather than cruelty, and her calm insistence that her work will speak for itself is such a strong beat for her character.

Even with the episode’s focus on professional distance, the tension between them keeps sizzling regardless, and it’s exactly why this pairing keeps earning praise as a masterclass in adult, believable chemistry.
