A Childhood Memory
Returning the fixed typewriter key sends Luan Nian back to a memory of himself as a boy, punished for a single typo and forced to retype an entire page, so furious he shoved the machine to the floor and broke it.
His mother reminds him that despite his father’s harshness, he stayed up until three in the morning fixing it himself, then had her lie and say the nanny did it. Typing on the machine now, backspacing through a few letters, he finishes a sentence: you don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of love. Something in him settles.
A Professional Truce, Barely
Back at the restaurant, Luan Nian insists that if Zhitao can maintain distance, so can he. At home, Zhitao keeps grinding on the supplier database, Sun Yuanzhu helping refine her work while Sun Yu warns her she needs to learn to manage expectations before she burns herself out.
Privately, Zhitao wonders how she’s supposed to walk the tightrope between working for him and how she feels about him, deciding the only answer is distance.
A Win, Then a Scandal
At the office, Tracy tells Luan Nian that Mr. Lin’s being reassigned to a top U.S. role, leaving him unofficially in line for Acting General Manager. He tells her not to celebrate until it’s official.
Zhitao finishes the supplier database, and he’s genuinely pleased, crediting Tracy for hiring her. She presents the database to the Yueteng team, who are thoroughly impressed, and Luan Nian makes a point of crediting her publicly rather than taking the win himself. The project’s theirs, and Tracy tells Zhitao a promotion to Senior Account Executive might be next.
Then the scandal hits. A doctored email smearing Luan Nian’s reputation, accusing him of mistreating an ex-girlfriend, gets blasted to thirty percent of the company. He seems entirely unbothered.
A Hunt for the Source
Alex confronts Annie directly, certain she’s behind it, and she doesn’t deny wanting Luan Nian out of the way for the GM role. Alex is livid and tells her she had gone too far and fear being exposed. She promises she won’t drag him down with her if it unravels.
Zhitao recognize the leaked footage as the night Zhang Xin cornered him at Tan Mian’s restaurant, she tells Lumi and they offer to testify on his behalf. Lumi herself has evidence of Zhang Xin’s toxic behaviour as she herself has received threatening emails. Tracy however tells them Luan Nian specifically asked to keep colleagues out of it.
Interviewed separately, staff describe him as strict but scrupulously fair, his only real flaw being how appealing he is to women. Luan Nian proves the emails were BCC’d to addresses only someone inside the company could know, including eleven employees hired after his breakup with Zhang Xin, proof that the scandal was doctored within the organisation.
Piecing It Together
At the KTV bar with friends that night, Luan Nian offers to fund their relocation after the property was reclaimed by his father. He then enlists their help investigating the scandal. At Tan Mian’s restaurant, they discover someone deliberately cut the power to disable the cameras that night, but a nearby delivery truck’s dashcam may have captured everything instead.
A Door Answered in a Rush
News breaks that Luan Nian’s been suspended pending investigation, and a worried Zhitao rushes to his apartment, ringing the bell so insistently he nicks his chin shaving in his hurry to answer.
He jokes about the neighbours complaining, then points out she never changed his door code, implying she’s always welcome. Flustered trying to bandage his chin, her hands shake so badly she drops the bandage entirely, and he steadies her hand himself.
A Kiss on the Mountain
He tells her not to worry about the scandal and instead accompany him to a place her wants to show her. He takes her to a scenic outlook up on the mountain, sharing his dream of opening a small private bar and asked her opinion. She reflects and says that it’s the perfect spot for stargazing but just needs some work. He agrees and decided to invest in his dream
She tells him plainly not to leave Lime, that his teaching may be harsh but every lesson has value. He bargains with her that if he promises her that he won’t leave, can she promise not to keep her distance that nigh in return? Noticing her shivering, he pulls her into his coat and kisses her, first her forehead, slow and soft, then her cheek. When he moves for her lips, she pulls back, caught in the fear that the person who falls first loses all their guard, and everything.
Luan Nian’s Vindication
Luan Nian brings his dashcam evidence to Mr. Lin, but rather than expose the internal sabotage publicly, argues that airing it would damage Lime’s reputation worse than the scandal itself. Mr. Lin agrees, and rewards his discretion with the Acting GM role outright. Lime issues a formal statement clearing his name and confirming legal action against Zhang Xin.
Settling Into Power
Back at work, Luan Nian approves Zhitao’s promotion and declines to move into Mr. Lin’s vacant office, choosing to stay close to his own floor, and secretly, to her desk.
In a budget meeting, he guts Alex and Annie’s bloated client entertainment budget, forcing real justification for every dollar spent. Annie seethes, though both she and Alex know exactly why.
Lumi, delighted to have her old boss back, admits she has zero interest in leading her own projects, content in letting Luan Nian carry that weight while she coasts. She warns Zhitao plainly never to fall for a man with a temper like his, as he’ll make every girl cry eventually, though she’s happy enough just being his friend.
The Early Spring Episode 8 Recap: My Thoughts
From a romance perspective, I think Luan Nian’s quietly made up his mind here, he wants this, clear from the very gentle and romantic kiss he gives her up on the mountain under the stars. Watching Zhitao’s work improve so dramatically clearly shifts something in how he sees her, and her frantic concern for him, wanting to testify, rushing to his door, keeps tugging at whatever’s left of his guarded heart.
He’s arrogance personified on the surface, but underneath it, a genuinely brilliant creative with real, unresolved issues with his father. Despite that cold exterior, he clearly has a handful of deep, real connections too.
Both leads continue selling this so convincingly, believable without ever tipping into cringe. He’s magnetic, she’s endearing, and where I initially found her a little too soft, almost “useless,” I’m now watching real backbone emerge in how she handles both her career and her feelings. She’s progressing so well professionally too, with some genuinely clever initiatives along the way.
I also loved her line comparing herself to an absolute beginner accidentally dropped in front of a max-level boss in some video game tutorial. It’s such a perfect, relatable way to capture her vulnerability while still showing her grit, she knows she’s outmatched on every front, emotionally and professionally, and she refuses to log out anyway.
And this episode finally gives the workplace plot real narrative weight of its own, rather than just backdrop. Watching Zhitao pull off the “impossible” supplier database, landing a genuine corporate win, was such a satisfying beat, and Luan Nian’s quiet smile of pride in that moment says everything about how his respect for her is growing right alongside his feelings.
