The Early Spring Episode 9 Recap

A Ride to Remember
Zhitao and Sun Yuanzhu enrol together at driving school, and when her instructor scolds Zhitao’s poor technique, Yuanzhu deliberately fumbles his own turn just to make her feel less alone in getting yelled at.
At Lime, Luan Nian keeps slashing budgets across the board, and Lumi tells Zhitao plainly that his bluntness is exactly why the board trusts him to lead.
A Truce
Alex and Luan Nian meet over coffee, Luan Nian bringing it himself as a gesture of goodwill. The two agree to let years of past grudges and behind-the-scenes scheming go, choosing to wipe the slate clean and work together going forward. Alex understands, without needing it spelled out, that Luan Nian won’t pursue the scandal against him any further.
Turning Pennies into Sponsorship
Tracy announces that to build better relations, a friendly basketball match has been organise between Lime and Yueteng Auto and she asks for volunteers to help organise the event. Zhitao puts her hand up willingly only for Alex to tell her she has measly budget of five-thousand-yuan budget for sixty people.
Struggling to make it work, she takes Sun Yu’s joking suggestion to “beg on the street” and turns it into something clever, offering suppliers priority partnership consideration for three years in exchange for sponsoring the venue, jerseys, food, and drinks. It works completely, and even Yueteng’s own rep is impressed. When Lumi reports the strategy back, Luan Nian’s genuinely pleased.
A Gift Declined, A Gift Given
Before the game, Wan Jun from Yueteng tries bribing Luan Nian to get his own suppliers onto the database. Luan Nian shuts it down flat stating that compliance isn’t negotiable. Lime wins the match, and though Luan Nian declines to show up for the celebration, he tells Lumi to keep him posted if Wan Jun tries angling for supplier favours through her instead.
Lumi goes into a panic that Luan Nian is not going to attend the dinner. She presses Zhitao to try and help her convince him as she had made a promise to her female colleagues in the media team, who in exchange will prioritise all their projects for the next three months. Zhitao is reluctant and thankfully Luan Nian turns up on his own accord.
A Toast, A Warning, A Medal
At dinner, Wan Jun tries toasting Luan Nian, who declines by claiming he’s driving, clearly recognizing the manoeuvre for what it is. He follows Zhitao out to the hallway afterward, and finds her fending off Wan Jun’s attempts to pry into how one could add suppliers onto the database. She explains that perhaps he may have misunderstood Luan Nian’s intentions and the whole idea of the database was the ability to withstand public scrutiny.
As Zhitao leaves the restroom, Luan Nian is waiting for her. He accuses her of being grateful about the basketball event to her colleagues and coworkers but never shows him any gratitude. He steps forward a couple of time and invades her space as she consciously steps back in response.
She offers him her basketball medal on the spot, and instead, he places it around her neck himself, warning her not to keep running from him. She admits plainly that running is what keeps her safe, she can’t risk her job over a relationship the company doesn’t allow. He offers an alternative: keep it private.
A Room Full of Nosy Colleagues
Back at the table, Lumi presses him about his relationship status on behalf of every curious woman on the media team, and when he tries to deflect with talk of proposals, she won’t let it go. Cornered, he claims he’s twice divorced with two kids to support, and the room clears out instantly.
After dinner, Luan Nian offers to drive Zhitao home only for Lumi to hijack the ride and insists her boss take her home first before dropping Zhitao home. Luan Nian is irritated he lost his opportunity to spend more time with Zhitao and jealousy flares hard when Lumi complains about Wan Jun’s lingering attention toward Zhitao. Luan Nian slams the brakes, launching into a lecture about contract compliance just to cover the reaction.
An Arrangement, Sealed
That night, Zhitao recounts his proposal over in her head, wanting a further explanation on what “keeping it private” meant. Luan Nian explains that dating is too troublesome and he can’t be bothered maintaining a relationship. Should either party wish to date or sleep with other people down the track, they can end their agreement. She agrees to his terms on the condition that this relationship has to remain exclusive. The both agree.
The next day, when a supplier tries slipping Lumi a kickback tied to Wan Jun’s recommendation, she reports it straight to Luan Nian, who demands the revised proposal that evening anyway, though Lumi insists Zhitao still gets to leave on time for her own birthday.
A Birthday, Missed on Purpose and Not
Unhappy Zhitao wasn’t celebrating her birthday with him, he heads to Tan Mian’s in frustration. In a hasty moment, Luan Nian sends Zhitao a painfully stiff work text, and Tan Mian mocks him for a greeting colder than an automated bank message, urging him to just call her properly.
At her birthday karaoke night, Zhitao turns down Lumi’s attempt to set her up, as the girls party it up, and shares a tender goodbye with Yao Bei, leaving for Hong Kong the next day.
Later, drunk and warm, she picks up when Luan Nian calls, and when he asks for her birthday wish, she tells him everything, that the people she loves stay in Beijing, that she keeps her job, that she becomes a better version of herself, and finally, that she gets to hold onto him for as long as she can. He can’t help but smile.
The Early Spring Episode 9 Recap: My Thoughts
Jing Boran and Sun Qian make this show is so addictive, and the pacing keeps proving why. Some call this a slow burn, but by episode 9, these two have quietly established exactly where they stand, even if the arrangement itself sounds almost clinical on paper. For someone like Luan Nian, though, this is arrangement suits him perfectly. He’s happy the moment he’s with her, restless the second they’re apart, and clearly incapable of not thinking about her regardless.
I loved that “keep this so you never forget, stop running” and “running away keeps me safe” exchange over the medal, it’s such a perfect distillation of exactly where these two stand. Zhitao isn’t running because she’s immature, she’s running because it’s the only real tool she has to survive a situation where her boss holds every ounce of power. That vulnerability makes her instantly easy to root for.
Zhitao is braver than she looks. She may come across innocent, but she understands exactly what she’s risking here, and she’s under no illusion this ends in some perfect happily ever after, not with someone like him.
She’d still rather have this, imperfect and complicated as it is, than not have it at all. And watching her pull off that supplier sponsorship on a shoestring budget was such a satisfying beat, real competence, no rescuing required, and Luan Nian’s quiet pride in her cleverness said everything about how much his respect for her keeps growing.
I also can’t get over how completely his cool, controlled exterior evaporates the moment jealousy or proximity comes into play, completely unravelling an otherwise composed man.
It’s all so believable, and I think that’s exactly why it’s so addictive, this dynamic plays out in real life more than people admit. Two people caught in a longing neither of them can fully control, doing their best to pretend otherwise.
