A Farewell to Yao Bei
Zhitao has dinner with Yao Bei, who’s leaving Beijing for Hong Kong after discovering her boyfriend of five years had been seeing an intern. Sad to see her go, Zhitao still thinks the move might be good for her, a fresh start somewhere new.
While packing, Yao Bei stumbles on an old sticky note tucked behind the radiator, a reminder of their old university dream of one day renting an apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows in Chaoyang District. Amid tears, the two toast to Beijing, to everything they’ve survived here, and Yao Bei tells Zhitao plainly that she’s invincible and will absolutely make it in this city.
The Files, Explained
Back at Lime, Alex is impressed Zhitao managed to secure the Qipai files at all, and asks what it cost her. She mentions putting together a presentation for him, unsure exactly what project it was for. When Alex learns it involved a car, he puts it together instantly, Luan Nian’s team has its sights set on Yueteng Auto, which explains why he was so willing to let Qipai go in the first place.
Her new team is thrilled to finally have the files, and her mentor points out it doesn’t matter how they got them, only that they did, prompting a celebratory dinner.
A Ride Home, and Big News
Sun Yu picks Zhitao up afterward in her little event van, and they swing by to grab Sun Yuanzhu too, who’s just been assigned to the self-driving car project he’d been hoping for, a role that requires his driver’s license, something Zhitao’s also been told she needs to get.
Sun Yu shares her own news too, applying for an internal promotion, determined to match her roommates’ ambition and work ethic.
An Uneasy Alliance
Meanwhile, Alex has dinner with Mr. Lin, venting about losing the Yueteng project back to Luan Nian, though Mr. Lin refuses to let him wallow, reminding him that Lime succeeds precisely because everyone brings different strengths to the table.
Once Luan Nian arrives, the tension is immediate, Alex needling him about winning the project back, Luan Nian firing back that his real competition was simply too weak, before walking it back with a joke about meaning the other agencies, not Alex specifically.
Then comes the twist, Luan Nian actually needs Alex’s help, six months of client intel gathered through countless dinners with the Yueteng sales team, information he can’t easily replicate himself.
Alex is visibly thrown that someone as self-sufficient as Luan Nian would ever ask for help at all. Mr. Lin steps in to broker the partnership properly, Luan Nian leading, Alex supporting, equal credit split between them, and though Alex isn’t thrilled, he has little choice but to accept.
Office Politics
Back at the office, Lumi praises Zhitao’s growing reputation but warns her to stop burying herself in spreadsheets for other people if she actually wants to lead real projects one day. Zhitao insists she genuinely enjoys understanding the data behind each project, and Lumi, only half convinced, lets it go for now.
When Alex brings Zhitao over to properly thank Luan Nian and announces the new joint venture, Lumi is visibly stunned by the news. Alex says that he’s looking forward to leaning on Lumi specifically for the negotiation side of things once the project ramps up.
Once he’s gone, Lumi presses Luan Nian on why he agreed to work with Alex at all, and gets nothing but a clipped “we’ll talk later,” clearly still bristling over Zhitao’s transfer to Alex’s team in the first place.
A Cornered Conversation
Zhitao tries dodging Luan Nian at the elevator, but he cuts her off and pulls her into the stairwell to talk properly. He wants to know if she’s avoiding him. She denies it, though not very convincingly. He points out the obvious, she had no trouble seeking him out when she needed the source files, but now that she’s gotten what she wanted, she’s nowhere to be found.
She holds her ground, insisting they’d already agreed that night was an accident, and that all she wants now is a safe, professional distance between them, without the constant threat of being fired hanging over her.
He leans in, needling her about how timid and sheepish she is, wondering aloud how she’ll ever survive in this industry. She pushes back hard, telling him plainly he’s the one being unprofessional here, and that she doesn’t consider herself lesser than anyone else in this building.
He asks, point blank, whether she thinks love is something a person can actually control. She says yes. He storms off without another word, leaving her alone in the stairwell, unsure what just happened.
A Company-Wide Announcement
Tracy calls a full staff meeting, and Mr. Lin formally announces that Luan Nian’s won Yueteng back, with Alex assisting as a dedicated joint team. Luan Nian explains their rival lost the account over a bad printing vendor choice, meaning strict supplier vetting is now a top priority company-wide, and asks everyone to submit vendor lists for review. Alex, asked if he has anything to add, simply defers to Luan Nian’s leadership, though he and Annie exchange a quietly worried glance.
Afterward, Annie corners Alex in his office, furious he’s letting Luan Nian take the lead after three months spent personally wining and dining Yueteng’s team for exactly this intel. Alex shrugs it off, pointing out they took Qipai from him first, so this evens the score. Annie warns him plainly, Luan Nian isn’t his friend, and Mr. Lin’s obvious favouritism could easily mean Luan Nian gets promoted right over him if he’s not careful.
A New Assignment
In a joint meeting, Luan Nian lays out Yueteng’s push toward digital marketing, and admits the company has no unified supplier database to work from, everyone’s been operating off separate project records.
He wants a shared list built from scratch, ranked by competence, cooperation, and real value to the client. Lumi volunteers to lead the collection, provided she gets someone strong in Excel to help, and Zhitao steps up immediately.
Annie isn’t thrilled, pointing out their database has already been overhauled three times in four years and that building this from nothing feels like a waste of time on a tight deadline, though she doesn’t stop them. She does question whether Zhitao even has clearance for some of the more sensitive data involved.
Understanding the Real Goal
Privately, Lumi admits she maybe bit off more than she should have, but Zhitao reassures her they can pull it off together, her Excel skills giving them a real edge. Lumi heads out to gather supplier names directly, unafraid of stepping on toes, while Zhitao goes to Luan Nian to understand exactly what he wants from the finished database.
He explains it plainly, a grading system not unlike a university pass and fail rate, meant to clearly separate reliable suppliers from unreliable ones. Beyond internal use, he wants something solid enough to confidently recommend to clients going forward, and points out this also opens real opportunity for smaller vendors who’ll be in high demand once Yueteng’s project ramps up.
Zhitao gets it instantly, this isn’t just about efficiency, it’s about fairness, protecting big companies through real accountability while giving smaller players a genuine shot. He warns her honestly that this is a massive undertaking, one that’ll eat up all her time and probably ruffle plenty of feathers along the way. She’s undeterred, genuinely excited to take it on.
He tells her, with real sincerity, that she’s proven bolder and sharper than he expected. On her way out, she hands him the missing typewriter key, finally repaired courtesy of Sun Yuanzhu. He’s visibly surprised, smiling, and watching him through the door, she can’t help but smile too.
Working Herself to the Bone
The following days keep her buried in fieldwork, and one night she limps back into the office, feet blistered from wearing heels during site visits. Lumi tells her to head home and stop working herself so hard.
Noticing her at her desk late, Luan Nian says nothing, and watching him doing the exact same thing in his own glass office, she reasons that if the most talented people in this building work this hard, she has no excuse not to either.
A Jealous Turn
As rain closes in, Luan Nian texts offering her a ride, and though she declines, he doesn’t take no for an answer. In the car, he jokes about filing for overtime pay and asks how the supplier list is coming along. Mid-conversation, Sun Yuanzhu calls offering to pick her up too, and she tells him she’s already on her way, visibly unaware of how much that stings Luan Nian sitting right beside her.
Arriving at her building, he shields her from the rain with an umbrella, and when her limp makes walking difficult, simply picks her up and carries her the rest of the way. In that closeness, he doesn’t let go right away, another quiet, charged moment between them, until she pushes him off just as Sun Yuanzhu shows up to walk her the rest of the way home himself.
Watching them go, Luan Nian’s jealousy finally boils over, and he hurls the umbrella aside in frustration. I laughed at this scene so hard!
A Blind Date, Cancelled
His mother calls while he’s still in the car, checking whether Friday still works for the blind date. He says he doesn’t want to go, and she’s clearly unhappy, reminding him he already agreed. She insists she doesn’t want to meddle in his personal life, but turning down friends and relatives once they’ve gone to the trouble of arranging something just isn’t polite.
Besides, she adds, they have no idea what they’re signing up for with his temper and his odd personality. Maybe it’s for the best, she says dryly, the girl probably wouldn’t put up with him anyway, no point wasting a good recommendation on a lost cause.
A Reckoning With Tan Mian
He ends up at Tan Mian’s restaurant, asking outright whether he’s intolerable. Tan Mian laughs, admitting yes, apart from his mother and the handful of friends who somehow put up with him. He presses further, wondering if Luan Nian confessed to someone and got rejected.
Luan Nian deflects, insisting modern women don’t want casual flings anymore, they want careers and independence, not relationships. Tan Mian disagrees entirely, arguing Zhitao is genuinely perfect for him, she saved him from that car wreck, hurt her own hand doing it, and never once asked for anything in return, even fixing his typewriter purely out of kindness.
Everyone wants real love, he insists, unless they’re a fool. What she can’t stand is his habit of assuming money fixes everything, and that, Tan Mian tells him plainly, is a genuinely problematic instinct.
Luan Nian points out that Tan Mian was the one who told him to buy her a gift in the first place. Tan Mian nearly chokes on his drink, correcting him fast. He’d said water the plant, not drown it in hot water. Buy her something to show gratitude, not something that reads like a payout. At this rate, he might as well just take her out for cheap street food instead.
Luan Nian, Tan Mian concludes, is a textbook case of wanting something badly while being too afraid to reach for it, terrified she’ll cling to him, yet equally terrified she doesn’t care at all. And this time, he tells him bluntly, he’s already lost.
The Early Spring Episode 7 Recap: My Thoughts
I’m loving how visibly unsettled Luan Nian is by Zhitao’s transfer to a different department. Watching them try to navigate a purely professional relationship after everything that’s happened is compelling.
It’s clear he’s losing composure far faster than she is, cornering her in stairwells, needling her just to get a reaction. He’s thrown by his own jealousy here, and being told outright, by the people who love him, that he’s difficult to tolerate seems to have cracked something open in him.
I’m enjoying watching him unravel and second-guess himself, that usual arrogant swagger finally failing him because, for once, he simply can’t get her out of his head. This episode belongs entirely to his internal struggle, while Zhitao keeps her head down and focuses on outworking everyone around her instead.
And honestly, this is exactly the trope everyone loves, watching a rich, arrogant, successful man completely crumble for a woman he assumed would be easy to walk away from. No matter how many times we’ve seen this story before, there’s something irresistible about the fantasy of it.
