Road To Success Episodes 23-24 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Fu Xinshu finally reveals the painful truth about his childhood, but his message to Wen Chengye gets deleted before it can matter, and the team plays a valiant but under-strength draw. A shared sick day and a satisfying confrontation with Wen Chengye’s abusive father give this stretch real emotional highs alongside a chilling reveal about Wanxing’s own guarded past.

Road To Success Episode 23 Recap

Still No Romance

Nothing to report on that front this episode, the focus stays entirely on the team and the aftermath of Wen Chengye’s departure.

Forfeit Vote Exercise

With the roster down to ten, Wanxing gathers the boys and puts the decision in their own hands, forfeit the next match or play shorthanded. She hands each of them paper to mark an X if they want to withdraw. If she were to receive even one โ€˜Xโ€™, they wonโ€™t play.

As she draws each vote one by one, it becomes clear, every single one wants to play regardless. It’s a clever exercise, forcing them to actually sit with what forfeiting would feel like before choosing not to. As she predicted, it would be a unanimous vote to continue, brining the boys closer together.

Meanwhile, Wanxing keeps looping Wen Chengye into every training schedule and plan as though he’s still on the team, and he keeps pushing back against the inclusion anyway.

Fu Xinshu’s Domestic Violence Backstory

Recognizing everyone else has already given something up for the team, Fu Xinshu decides to make his own sacrifice, finally telling Wen Chengye the truth about that missed birthday. Standing outside his own house, he records himself explaining why he’s always avoided the subject, because what happened disgusts him to even say out loud.

His mother, it turns out, was a victim of ongoing domestic violence. On the day in question, his father had just been bailed out of jail after another assault. Once home, the beating started again, and young Fu Xinshu, unable to take it anymore, hit his father with a brick hard enough to send the back to the police station.

Afterward, his mother asked the police outright whether violence like that could be hereditary, terrified that watching her own son strike his father meant he’d grow up to become the same kind of man. Not long after, she files for divorce, abandons her son and never came back. That fear is exactly why Fu Xinshu has spent his life avoiding conflict entirely, always the one to give in first, always trying to prove he’s nothing like his father.

A Message Deleted

Fu Xinshu’s confession never reaches Wen Chengye though, his father intercepts and deletes every message before he can see them, then announces he’s arranged an interview for the very next day, match day.

The Race Against Time

In the car en route to the interview, the father lets slip that he saw something about a violent father in the messages, and Wen Chengye realizes, in that moment, he’s finally been given the answer he’s wanted all along. He bolts from the car straight to the train station, misses the train, and scrambles onto a bus instead, desperate to make the match in time.

The Match

Down a player, the team gives everything they have, and the game ends in a hard-fought, respectable 0-0 draw, commendable given the circumstances. Wen Chengye arrives too late, stuck in traffic the whole way, and misses the match entirely.

Fu Xinshu apologizes for the missed win, and Wen Chengye, in tears, immediately corrects him, insisting he’s the one who owes everyone an apology instead. This is the pivotal moment of forgiveness between two friends and inclusion into the team he wanted so badly but never voiced.

Watching it all unfold, Wanxing finally understands the answer to a question Wang Fa once asked her, why people play football at all. It isn’t about winning. It’s the pull to stand on the pitch with your teammates, again and again, even through every argument, every loss, refusing to accept defeat or give in to fate.

Road To Success Episode 24 Recap

Sick Together

After the match, Wang Fa comes down with a bad fever, and Wanxing shows up with medicine and warm congee to check on him. She presses a hand to his forehead to gauge the heat, and she reaches for the back of his neck, pulling their foreheads together instead, visibly overwhelmed by the closeness.

Slowly, he leans in for what looks like a real kiss, only for her to sneeze right in his face, revealing she’s caught the same fever. Medicine gets ordered for both of them, and later, wrapped in a blanket on her couch, she invites him in to warm up too. Sharing a single mug of hot water between them, he pulls her in close, both of them thoroughly miserable and sick, and somehow the whole scene lands as genuinely sweet rather than awkward.

On a different day, he leaves a peony on her doorstep, and impulsively, she asks him out on a date, something she seems to second-guess the moment it’s out of her mouth.

Xi Jiang’s Release

Xi Jiang is released from the psychiatric ward, and the very first thing he does in the car is send a text to Wanxing’s father, a thread the show leaves dangling for now.

Wen Chengye’s Home Life Unravels

The boys realize Wen Chengye’s odd habit of taking a taxi instead of the bus isn’t standoffishness, it’s practical as he gets sick on the bus. Once he gets home that night, his father, enraged, locks him in a wardrobe in the dark.

The next day, word comes that the team’s results are enough to advance to the next stage, a great win overshadowing Wen Chengye’s absence from school. Then Wanxing receives a video from him directly, footage of his father’s abuse, the locked cupboard included.

She and Wang Fa go straight to confront him. He initially claims his son isn’t home, until they show him the recording, at which point his tone shifts to demanding they stay out of the family’s business.

Wen Chengye, once let out, makes his position clear, he’s willing to study abroad eventually, but wants to choose his own major and finish out the football season first. He reveals there’s more footage too, hidden cameras placed around the house documenting the abuse over time. His father, cornered, dismisses him bitterly as a stray dog and tells him to go ahead and live like one.

That’s exactly when the whole team charges in, having noticed Wen Chengye missing from school and coming to check on him. Facing his father directly, Wen Chengye says simply, he’s not a stray dog, he has friends. It’s a hugely satisfying payoff, and one of the best moments of friendship and unity the show has delivered.

Later, the team turns in an assignment on why they each play football, and the answers, thoughtful and distinctly personal to each boy, all circle back to the same simple truth in the end, they play to win.

A Family Confrontation

That night, the injured dog gets sick and throws up on Wang Fa, sending them both to the vet for an overnight stay. Returning the next morning, they find Wanxing’s apartment door ajar, and inside, her parents waiting. There’s real tension in the room, and her father tries to get Wang Fa to leave, only for him to invent an urgent excuse to stay involved anyway. Her father mentions they’ll be visiting her grandparents’ graves the next morning at nine.

Wang Fa tells Wanxing plainly, not asking, that he’s coming with her the next day, and she agrees. At the cemetery, her parents are visibly unhappy to see him there. As they pay their respects, her mother asks pointedly whether it’s true she’s just a sports equipment attendant rather than an actual teacher.

Confirmed, her father is furious, threatening to call the principal to have her removed, insisting she come home rather than waste her life here. There’s clearly deeper history and anger between them that hasn’t been explained yet.

Wanxing responds simply, that staying in Hongjing was her grandfather’s dying wish, exactly what she’s doing now, leaving the door open on whatever truth about her past, and her own rock bottom a year ago, is still waiting to come out.

Road To Success Episodes 23-24 Recap: My Thoughts

Episode 23: This is a tough, well-earned episode of real emotional weight. Fu Xinshu’s confession is devastating, and it reframes his entire personality, the constant appeasement, the refusal to fight, as survival instincts forged from real trauma rather than simple passivity.

The cruelty of his father intercepting and deleting the message right before match day is a gut punch too, denying Wen Chengye the closure he’s been chasing for years through no fault of Fu Xinshu’s own. And Wanxing finally arriving at her own answer about why these boys play, not for glory, but for each other, ties the whole episode together beautifully.

Episode 24: This episode delivers real momentum on both fronts after a stretch of mostly team-focused material. The shared sick day is one of the sweetest, most low-key romantic scenes the show has done, real intimacy built from something as ordinary as a shared mug of hot water to keep hands warm.

Wen Chengye’s confrontation with his father is the emotional highlight though, and the whole team showing up unprompted to stand behind him is exactly the kind of earned, wordless payoff this show does so well. The cemetery scene raises real stakes heading forward too, Wanxing’s guarded past finally starting to crack open under pressure she clearly didn’t choose.
