Road To Success Episode 17 Recap
Chasing a Ghost of a Career
Wanxing gets an anonymous tip pointing her to an email announcing the new head coach at Hejian, and it isn’t Wang Fa. She runs off looking for him immediately, and once she finds him, brings him back to the tuition center to show him something the boys put together in his absence.
It is a goodbye video, warm, funny, full of real everyday banter that never feels forced. It’s such a touching piece of homemade footage, ending with all of them declaring that they love him. Wanxing reveals she knows heโs not going to the academy and tells him gently that she knows the truth. It was never them he wanted to leave behind, it was football itself.
Jason’s Truth, Finally Spoken
He finally tells her everything. Jason jumped from a rooftop right in front of him. At the funeral, Jason’s mother told him plainly that she’d entrusted her son to him and this was the result. Reading the journal she later gave him; Wang Fa saw just how much of himself Jason had poured into the sport. And how desperately he’d needed his coach’s belief near the end, the final entries scrawled in desperation, questioning why even his own coach wouldn’t believe him.
For Wang Fa, the wound goes deeper than grief alone, half his life spent in a profession built on ruthless selection, out of a hundred kids, only ever choosing one. And somewhere in that process, he’d failed the one who needed him most. It leaves him questioning whether he even deserves to keep coaching at all.
Wanxing meets him exactly where he is, telling him she hit her own rock bottom a year ago and understands the weight he’s carrying better than most could. She flips a coin, echoing the very first scene of the series, and gets heads, the same result Wang Fa got when he made his own decision to leave. He asks what her coin toss result had been back then. She admits she got heads too, meant to walk away, but stayed anyway. When he asks why, she smiles and simply says she cheated.
Cheating Fate Together
The next morning, the boys crash Wanxing’s place with breakfast to watch the UEFA Cup, and Wang Fa walks through the door right behind them, having made his own choice to cheat fate too. He admits outright he didn’t want to leave, he’d have missed them too much.
When the boys tease him about whether it’s really them he’d miss or Wanxing specifically, he doesn’t deny it, our Wanxing too, he says, and the moment lands as the happy turn this arc has been building toward.
The Investigation Widens
Yu Bo digs up something significant. Every time manager Kevin Lee resigns from a club, he walks away with a massive windfall, funding luxury cars, property, yachts. The hunt shifts to figuring out exactly who’s been financing him, and whether that person is the real Spade Q.
A New Face in the Picture
At school, Wanxing introduces her old middle school best friend Ju Li, a physics prodigy just returned to town. Feeling a little threatened by each other, Ju Li and Wang Fa compete for Wanxingโs time and attention. They compete over a roast duck dinner, a shopping afternoon and a camping weekend.
They all decide to go camping together and Yu Bo arrives to pick them up, along with Wang Fa’s sister, meeting Wanxing properly for the first time.

Road To Success Episode 18 Recap
A Camping Trip and a Watch in the Lake
The five of them head out for a lakeside camping trip, card games, drinks, easy laughter under the open sky. There’s an interesting undercurrent running through the group too. Ju Li’s attention seems to linger on Wanxing in a way that hints at something more than simple friendship.
During a game of frisbee, Yu Bo’s throw knocks Wanxing’s grandfather’s watch straight into the lake, and Wang Fa dives in after it immediately, fully aware of how much it means to her. He stays under so long the light starts fading, and Wanxing’s panic builds with every passing minute. Ju Li watches on, realising how much Wanxing seems to care for Wang Fa.
Thankfully he surfaces with the watch. Later drying off by the fire he fixes the loose clasp that caused it to slip off in the first place. Wanxing dries his hair with a towel while scolding him for the risk he took, diving into open water with no idea how deep it actually was.
It’s the first time we see her genuinely, openly caring for him without the boys around to soften the moment. He asks if she trusts him. She says yes. He tells her that means everything will be fine, slips the watch back onto her wrist.
When he lets go of her hand, he pulls her right back in instead, leaning in slowly, deliberately. She doesn’t pull away, doesn’t hesitate, clearly wants this as much as he does. Then Yu Bo interrupts with urgent news from the UK, and the kiss never happens. The look Wang Fa gives him is exactly how I feel. Come on! Kiss already!
Later, over drinks, Ju Li finally asks Wanxing outright if she has feelings for Wang Fa, but before she can answer, he interrupts, this time to say goodbye as he’s flying out to the UK. They have a lead on Kevin Lee and they need to move quickly before he disappeared completely.
For the first time, both of them have shown, if not said outright, exactly how much they mean to each other, and that almost-kiss lingers as one of the more genuinely romantic near-misses the show has delivered.
A Devastating Discovery
While he’s away, an electrician comes to replace the building’s outdated circuit breakers, and Wanxing heads upstairs to switch off the one in his room, tucked inside the very cupboard holding his entire Spade Q investigation.
What she finds stops her cold, her own name, her profile, printed chat logs laid out in full. It clicks into place fast and painfully, she really is the Spade Q in some form, and the boy she’d once known online under a different name, Ash, was Jason all along. The betrayal cuts deep, not just the deception itself, but the fear that everything Wang Fa’s felt for her might have only ever been a means to an end.
Wang Fa Corners Kevin Lee
In the UK, Wang Fa and Yu Bo race to catch Kevin Lee before he liquidates his assets and disappears to Africa, beyond the reach of prosecution. With no hard evidence in hand, they fabricate proof instead, deducing from Jason’s diary that a cash exchange likely happened through a specific locker number 19, his favourite.
Confronted with fake footage suggesting real evidence exists, Kevin folds, admitting his role in manipulating the boys, though insisting Jason’s death was never the intended outcome. He can’t identify the real Spade Q though, everything happened online, the only clue being a butterfly profile picture.
The Match
Back home, Wang Fa relays tactics for the upcoming championship match through Wanxing, who runs the team through a democratic strategy session, letting them vote and reason their way to a plan, one that, tellingly, matches exactly what Wang Fa had already suggested. He makes it back in time for the second half, and with the game tied at nil, the tactic finally pays off, sealing a 1-0 win.

Road To Success Episodes 17-18 Recap: My Thoughts
Episode 17:This episode earns its emotional whiplash completely, opening in devastating grief and closing in genuine warmth. The coin toss parallel is such a clever structural callback, tying Wanxing’s own long-ago rock bottom directly to Wang Fa’s present crisis, and her quiet confession that she cheated fate rather than let it decide for her gives him exactly the permission he needs to do the same.
Watching him walk through that door with breakfast, choosing to stay for real this time, is one of the most satisfying payoffs the show’s delivered. The introduction of Ju Li is an interesting wrinkle worth watching, not clearly romantic competition yet, but definitely adding a new layer of tension to keep an eye on.
Episode 18: This episode delivers the show’s most romantically charged moment yet, and the interrupted kiss stings in exactly the way it’s meant to, so close, so clearly wanted by both of them, snatched away at the worst possible second. Love the tie back to Wanxing’s grandfather’s watch.
But it’s the circuit breaker discovery that really lands the gut punch, recontextualizing every tender moment between them under a cloud of doubt right when things finally seemed to be moving forward.
Kevin Lee’s confession is a satisfying investigative payoff too, though the butterfly clue leaves just enough mystery dangling to keep the real culprit’s identity wide open heading into the next stretch.
