Wanxing tries once more to get Wen Chengye to open up about his hostility toward the team, but he shuts down the moment football comes up and walks away. Meanwhile, the boys’ loyalty to Fu Xinshu shines through in a small, sweet way.
They trick Wanxing into helping deliver new uniforms just so they can surprise their captain with an extra training session and gear he clearly wasn’t expecting. It’s a genuinely warm scene, and it says a lot about how far this ragtag group has come as a unit. With the roster still short a player, Fu Xinshu volunteers to personally win Wen Chengye over, believing their shared love of the sport might succeed where everyone else’s efforts have failed.
Romance
Her washing machine breaking down gives Wanxing an excuse to spend real time at Wang Fa’s place. She uses this opportunity to run an improvised therapy session on him. He reveals here that he loves drinking as a coping mechanism to calm his anxiety.
Under the guise of helping him with his insomnia, she pushes for real answers and asks why he left a promising career in the UK and whether he’s hiding something. He deflects everything by turning the questions back on her.
He asks about her time in London and whether she liked the rainy days there. She replied that she loved London’s damp weather while he admits that rain reminds him of loss and goodbye. He also question why an accomplished academic like herself is working in a high school managing sports equipment. Neither reveal very much, adding to the suspicious nature of the real reasons why both of them are in the position they are now.
Later, unable to sleep herself, she orders a mountain of late-night snacks just to lure him downstairs, then talks him into trying river snail rice noodles as a supposed insomnia cure.
He hates the smell, tries anyway, and ends up wide awake all night from the salt. The next morning, sleep-deprived and unimpressed, he confronts her, and she cheekily owns up to the trick without much guilt, swiping his breakfast on her way out for good measure. He doesn’t seem annoyed by any of it, if anything, there’s a real ease settling into their back-and-forth now.
The Wen Chengye Fu Xinshu Bet
Wen Chengye agrees to join the team, but only if Fu Xinshu serves as his personal errand boy for a week, fetching specific breakfasts, organizing notes, running constant tasks on tight deadlines. It’s exhausting, and it peaks with a humiliating request. Wen Chengye gets Fu Xinshu to buy him a pair of runners and demands Fu Xinshu physically put shoes on his feet for him.
That’s the last straw. Fu Xinshu throws the shoes down and walks away, only for Wen Chengye to finally admit the truth, he does want to join, he just can’t stand being around people he sees as weak. His real condition surfaces: if Fu Xinshu can outscore him on the upcoming English exam, he’s in.
It’s Fu Xinshu’s worst subject, the whole team rallies, turning training sessions into English drills. They recruit Wanxing to lead a full academic push, not just for their captain, but for everyone to beat Wen Chengye.
Underneath all of it, there’s clearly history between Fu Xinshu and Wen Chengye that hasn’t been explained yet, something about a friendship that soured once Fu Xinshu found a new group of “brothers” and left Wen Chengye feeling forgotten.

Wen Chengye’s Buried Memory
Home alone, Wen Chengye pulls out an old pair of shoes swapped with a fellow patient years ago, a discharge gift from a childhood friend he clearly still treasures, even if that friend, now unrecognizable, has no idea it was him all along.
The English Exam Payoff
The team’s improvised study campaign takes over everything, vocabulary drills at dinner, English idioms shouted mid-training, and even Director Qian growing concerned enough to warn Wanxing to keep an eye on the boys’ mental state.
On exam day, Qin Ao panics and tries to slip Fu Xinshu a cheat sheet, unnoticed by Fu Xinshu himself, who’s too locked in to even see it, though Wen Chengye watches the whole thing happen.
Fu Xinshu edges out Wen Chengye by half a point, and the leap from his usual failing grade draws immediate suspicion from Director Jin, who threatens to void the score entirely. Wanxing steps in, and rather than argue, proposes Fu Xinshu retake an equivalent exam on the spot, under full supervision.
He scores even higher the second time, forcing a full apology from the director. True to form, Fu Xinshu turns down the offer to log his higher score, insisting the original result was the honest one. The team’s celebration afterward is pure joy, capped by a hilariously mangled attempt at an English proverb aimed at thanking Wanxing.
Wen Chengye, for his part, quietly returns the dropped cheat sheet to Fu Xinshu and acknowledges the win was fair. True to his word, he shows up to train the next day, and a side bet over whether he’d actually come leads to a genuinely funny forced bike ride penalty for Qin Ao and Chen Jianghe, capped off by Director Qian chasing his own stolen bicycle around the field.
Romance
This is a huge episode for the two of them. Watching Wanxing’s fierce, unwavering loyalty to her students, Wang Fa finds himself less and less able to reconcile the woman in front of him with the cold, calculating Spade Q he’s been hunting. Determined to test it once more, he shows up that night under the flimsy excuse of borrowing her flashlight to go firefly hunting, and invites her along.
Out on their walk, something shifts. She sprains her ankle, they sit to rest, and she opens up more than she has all series. She talks about why fireflies matter to her, a childhood lesson about faint light cutting through darkness.
He notices she’s talking more freely than usual, and when he says as much, she points out plainly, it’s because he’s never actually made the time to get to know her before now. Then the fireflies rise, and her sheer joy watching them is impossible for him not to be moved by, her comparing them to love letters from the night to the earth is a lovely, quiet moment between them.
On the walk back, he lays out the real stakes, winning their next match means committing to the whole season, and he wants to know if she’s actually ready to stop being a slacker for this. He gives her twenty-four hours, and they agree to meet lakeside for her answer.
When the moment comes, she stalls, admits she wants both, to keep coasting and to see the boys win, and he tells her plainly, she can’t have both. They end up settling it with a charming bet involving a stray dog choosing between them, and of course, the dog picks her.
Noticing a scratch on his arm, she insists on treating it back at her apartment, and Wang Fa can’t help the quiet thought that crosses his mind, she actually cares. She follows up by walking him through a full aromatherapy and meditation session, candles, ocean sounds, her voice guiding him down, and for the first time all series, he sleeps through an entire night undisturbed.
The next morning, Yu Bo shows up looking for him, only to catch him walking out of her apartment door, and the teasing that follows is exactly as fun as it sounds.
This episode marks a real turning point, maybe not quite the moment he falls for her outright, but the walls are undeniably coming down fast, and it’s genuinely hard for him to keep holding onto his suspicion in the face of everything he’s just witnessed.
Road To Success Episodes 7-8 Recap: My Thoughts
Episode 7:The Wang Fa and Wanxing scene of questioning each other about their motives and the random topic about rain, was an interrogation rather than a conversation. They are both probing, looking for answers and both do well to deflect, ending in quiet frustration.
The Wen Chengye and Fu Xinshu dynamic is shaping up to be one of the show’s more emotionally loaded threads too, there’s real pain under his cruelty, and I’m looking forward to finding out exactly what drove them apart.
Episode 8: This episode earns its emotional weight completely. The firefly sequence is easily the most beautifully shot, most quietly romantic moment the show’s given us so far, and it lands because it’s built on real vulnerability rather than a grand gesture.
Watching Wang Fa’s suspicion crack under the weight of who Wanxing actually is, warm, protective, fiercely loyal, is done well and not rushed. And the small, mundane detail of him sleeping through the night for the first time in a long time says more than any romantic declaration could.
Esther Yu is radiant in this episode too, there’s a real, unguarded warmth to her performance here that makes it easy to understand exactly why Wang Fa’s resistance is finally starting to give way.
