Wang Fa’s Not Who They Thought
Halftime finds the No. 8 High School players exhausted and venting about the referee, and Lin Wanxing leans into it, badmouthing the ref herself just to get them talking. Someone spots Wang Fa nearby and asks if he’s her boyfriend, which she shuts down fast, introducing him instead as a childhood classmate freshly back from coaching abroad.
The boys learn that he was the former Nanton coach, a youth Southampton team in the UK. Ranked as the world’s best. The boys are sceptical, until Chen Jianghe tries to trip him up by asking for a specific club’s record from the previous season, and Wang Fa answers instantly and correctly. That’s enough to earn their attention, if not quite their trust.
He steps in to guide the second half, and against a faster, stronger opponent, his read on the game turns things around fast. A daring, high-risk strategy pays off, first with a goal from Qin Ao that has Wanxing grabbing Wang Fa’s arm in pure excitement before immediately catching herself, and then with a stunning last-minute equalizer that ends the match in a hard-fought draw.
His response to her gratitude afterward is blunt as ever, just tell her to pay him, along with the observation that the boys were never really afraid of losing, only of losing face.
The Team, and What They Lost
Stranded without a bus home, Wanxing treats the team to dinner, where the boys open up a little about how their old football program got scrapped, leaving them feeling cast aside as leftover transfer students.
Fu Xinshu also finally admits the “mysterious note” he used to lure everyone back together never existed; he made it up just to get the team playing again. It’s a small, honest confession that shifts the mood without breaking it entirely.
Wang Fa’s Real Motive
Back home, his former agent Yu Bo drops by with supplies and, digging through the closet, stumbles onto the real reason Wang Fa’s living here at all. He finds a full wall of research connecting Wanxing to someone he’s been hunting: Spade Q. Wang Fa confirms it plainly, he moved to Hongjing specifically to investigate his landlady.
Romance
That evening, another leak sends Wanxing upstairs, and she walks in just as he’s stepping out of the bath, robe only. Flustered, she looks away and reports the leak, and their exchange afterward has a strange, genuine spark to it.
She half-jokingly diagnoses his habit of submerging himself as a coping mechanism, suggesting he try diving instead, and he notes, with real curiosity, that she seems to know more than a little about psychology. She deflects fast, insisting she’s just protecting her property as his landlady.
The next day brings real pressure. Director Qian refuses to let her off the team, and the boys make her job even harder. They’ll only keep playing if she can convince Wang Fa to coach them properly.
Desperate, she adds him on WeChat under the excuse of the ceiling repair, then works up the nerve to actually ask. He turns her down cold flat, leaving her staring at her phone, no closer to keeping her job or honouring her grandfather’s wish.

Wang Fa turns down the coaching job again the next morning, blunt as ever, while behind the scenes he’s still hunting for a way into Wanxing’s laptop, convinced she’s Spade Q. His pipe issue gives him an opening, an excuse to visit and eventually crash somewhere close to her computer, though his agent Yu Bo’s more underhanded suggestions get shot down fast.
When the repair drags into the night, Wang Fa’s left needing a hotel. Wanxing seizes the moment to pitch the coaching job again, gets rejected again, then, annoyed, quietly swipes his ID card so he can’t check in anywhere. Unbeknownst to her, that plays right into his hands, and he ends up staying in her spare room instead, exactly where he wanted to be.
Three Strategies, Zero Success
Determined to wear him down, she deploys a trio of textbook psychological tactics, small favours to build goodwill, a horror movie to trigger dependence, and an engineered blackout to force closeness.
Every single one backfires. He sees through each move instantly, calmly listing off exactly what she’s doing and why it won’t work, and flatly repeats his refusal. It’s fun watching him call her out point by point, since it makes clear he’s every bit her match, not just a stubborn wall to push against.
He does throw her one real challenge though, pointing out she has no idea what actually drives these boys, their positions, their history, what the sport means to them. Stung, she spends the day digging into the team’s background instead of scheming, and lures him to the school under the excuse of needing help moving books.
A Real Conversation
There, surrounded by an empty classroom, she lays it all out for him, who each player is, what they’re good at, and the real reason behind their prickly attitude. They were never indifferent to football, they were abandoned by their coach and their program got.
She hands back his stolen ID card, apologizes for the psychological games, and admits her first motive was purely selfish, saving her own job, but asks him sincerely to help the boys regardless.
He doesn’t agree outright, but he proposes a bet instead. If she can survive his rigidly disciplined lifestyle, he’ll consider coaching. She counters that it is only fair that he also has to survive hers too, whoever cracks first loses.
Romance
There’s real warmth creeping in under all the sparring. When the power goes out and she admits she’s scared of the dark, he hands over his own torch without hesitation, a small, quiet gesture that stands out against how guarded he’s been.
Their swap of daily routines that follows, her groggy and horrified at his 6am fasted cardio, him bewildered by her habit of eating spicy snacks, plays out light and funny. It’s clear both of them are starting to actually enjoy needling each other rather than just posturing. Still no real spark yet, but the ease between them is growing. Esther Yu Chen Jingke chemistry is working even without the romance.

Episode 3:This episode does real work building Wang Fa as more than just a cold, suspicious presence. His coaching scene is satisfying and believable, while we witness a trauma he’s trying to cope with his underwater bath routine in the dark. The reveal of his actual motive, that wall of research on her, raises the stakes in a way that makes his every gesture feel loaded.
I’m enjoying the team’s backstory, cast off after their program was cut, gives their stubbornness real emotional grounding rather than just teenage attitude. The rag tag group of teenage boys seem like there is good chemistry there and enjoying getting to know them individually.
Episode 4:This episode does the best job yet of making Wang Fa feel like a real character rather than just a mystery box. Watching him dismantle her psychological tricks so effortlessly is satisfying, and it raises the stakes on their dynamic since neither one can easily manipulate the other.
The classroom scene is the emotional heart of the episode though, her research and honesty finally breaking through his scepticism feels earned rather than convenient. The lifestyle swap bet is a fun, low-stakes way to keep pulling them into each other’s orbit without forcing the romance before it’s ready.
So far, I’m enjoying this coming of age, sport genre, psychological strategy cdrama.
