Almost, But Not Quite
Walking home after a good day building the veggie patch, Wanxing and Wang Fa are both clearly in high spirits. He asks if she’s happy, and she deflects, crediting it to being colleagues, the boys doing well, everything falling into place.
He tries to say something more, something that doesn’t quite make it out, and she seems to sense exactly what he’s holding back, laughing it off and skipping away before he can finish. The hurt from the Spade Q reveal has clearly healed enough for warmth to return between them, they just haven’t found their way back to actually saying what they feel.
A Glimpse Into Wen Chengye’s Home
We finally get real insight into Wen Chengye’s family life, wealthy on paper, cold underneath. His relationship with his parents is strained, and there’s real tension over his mother’s male friend, tension sharp enough that he ruins the man’s gifted orchids with hot tea just to make a point.
A Devastating Change
The team learns their round-robin opponent has shifted to Yongchan Hengjiu, the strongest team in the competition, and the mood sours fast. Amid the disappointment, Fu Xinshu realizes he’s lost a keychain off his backpack and searches for it in real panic before Qin Ao pulls him away.
Wen Chengye Hospital Flashback
A flashback fills in the real history between Fu Xinshu and Wen Chengye. As children, both in a hospital, Wen Chengye kept to himself, refusing to get close to other kids, until Fu Xinshu broke through anyway. Wen Chengye, guarded even then, refused to share his real name, resentful of a father who didn’t love him back, so Fu Xinshu simply nicknamed him “Bei Bei” instead.
They spent a lot of time playing football together in the rooftop of the hospital and they became fast friends. Noticing Fu Xinshu was wearing shoes that were worn out, Wen Chengye gives him his brand-new runners. Xinshu loves them but says that he doesn’t have money to pay him back. Cheng Ye said it was ok and then when they were adults, Xinshu can buy him a pair later.
When Wen Chengye was finally due for discharge, he gave Fu Xinshu a Messi keychain which he vowed to keep on his bag forever. Xinshu is sad at losing his nameless friend so Chengye invites him to the fried chicken shop next weekend to celebrate his birthday and he promised to reveal his real name to Xinshu. Xinshu promises him.
On the actual day, Wen Chengye ‘s parents forced him to celebrate with his grandparents instead, in the middle of their own fight over his father’s affair. Desperate, he jumps out of the car and run. His father chased him down, warning him never to come back if he left, before delivering a cruel line about being nothing without the Wen family. Wen Chengye waited at the chicken shop all day. Fu Xinshu never showed.
Reunited, But Something’s Still Wrong
Years later, Fu Xinshu accidently drops his keychain in the tuition centre. Later he returns and is desperately looking for it when Wen Chengye, who found it beforehand, returns it to him. Xinshu is happy and relieved.
Wen Chengye then shows him the matching keychain. The pieces click into place for both of them at once, “Bei Bei” was him all along, and the reunion should be a joyful one. Wen Chengye asked him why he failed to recognise him and why he didn’t show up at this birthday. Fu Xinshu goes quiet, unwilling or unable to explain, and Wen Chengye storms off angry, no answer given
The Match Falls Apart
At the next match, the tension boils over completely. Wen Chengye abandons the team’s formation entirely, playing on his own terms, and Qin Ao’s fury only grows as things unravel. Fu Xinshu and Wen Chengye both chase the same ball and end up injured. Qin Ao accuses Wen Chengye of doing it on purpose, and Wen Chengye doesn’t deny it, he admits it outright. The team loses badly, 11-0.

A Small, Sweet Gesture
After a long, heavy conversation with Fu Xinshu, Wanxing and Wang Fa walk home together and pass a flower seller, where he buys her a fresh jasmine wristband, one she clearly loves. It’s a lovely little moment, though the only real romantic scene this episode offers. Two episodes now with barely any forward movement, and it’s starting to feel like the pacing could use a nudge, hopefully the payoff is close.
The Team, Falling Apart
Everyone rushes to the hospital after Fu Xinshu’s ankle injury turns out to be, thankfully, just a sprain, but the relief doesn’t last. Wen Chengye announces he’s done with the team entirely, and the bus ride home is bleak, the boys completely deflated, unsure how they’re supposed to compete a man down. Wanxing tries to rally them, but nothing lands.
Wen Chengye’s Home Life
Wen Chengye goes home alone, badly bruised ribs and all, only to face his father’s fury over missing a college admissions interview to play football instead, an interview meant to secure his path to studying computer science overseas.
Wen Chengye pushes back hard, he doesn’t want to go abroad mid-year, and points out flatly that his father’s never treated him like a real son to begin with. A painful memory surfaces too, at age ten, his father took him for a paternity test, a moment that clearly wounded him deeply. What exactly happened afterward, when he collapsed at the hospital following that test, is left unexplained, but the scar it left is obvious.
The Real Reason
Wanxing and Wang Fa go looking for him at home, gently probing whether there’s history between him and Wen Chengye still unresolved. He still won’t say why he never showed up that day. Wang Fa reads the situation clearly, Wen Chengye plays because he genuinely loves the game, but his anger isn’t really about football at all, it’s about the answer he’s never gotten, and Fu Xinshu’s silence is quietly eating away at him.
Making the Team Understand
Determined to help the boys see Wen Chengye’s value properly, Wang Fa runs a demonstration match, deliberately recreating the exact plays Wen Chengye made that day, recording it as he goes. Watching it back, the team finally understands, what looked like sabotage was actually him trying to win, executing real, smart plays that nobody else was positioned to recognize because they’d never gotten close enough to understand how he thinks.
It wasn’t betrayal. It was a teammate playing alone because no one else had caught up to him yet. Armed with that understanding, the boys try to bring him back the next day, apologies from both Fu Xinshu and Qin Ao included. It doesn’t work. Wen Chengye is still too hurt to let it go.
Road To Success Episodes 21-22 Recap: My Thoughts
Episode 21: The childhood flashback here is so gutting alongside the fried chicken shop promise, and it recontextualizes so much of Wen Chengye’s hostility toward the team as heartbreak in disguise rather than simple cruelty. Watching two boys who once found real connection in a hospital ward end up here, one silently withholding an explanation, the other lashing out on the pitch, is a real gut punch after how far they’d come as teammates.
The loss itself stings precisely because it’s not really about the football at all, it’s years of unresolved hurt finally boiling over in the worst possible place.
Episode 22: This episode does real emotional work even without much romantic movement, and Wang Fa’s demonstration match is a genuinely clever, wordless way of getting the team to finally see Wen Chengye clearly instead of just resenting him.
His home life adds real, painful context too, that paternity test detail lands hard without needing much explanation at all. That said, I’ll admit the romance pacing is starting to test my patience a little at this point in the series, that jasmine wristband is sweet, but after everything these two have been through together, I’m hoping the show doesn’t wait too much longer to let them actually say what they clearly feel.
