Against The Current Episode 18 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Du Cuique’s true nature is fully exposed, evil, calculating, and unrepentant, while Du Zheng’s betrayal of Jinqi ends in a devastating deathbed question neither of them can answer. Beneath the darkness, this episode also delivers one of the show’s most tender moments yet, a drunken, unguarded exchange between Jinqi and Lanxiang that finally treats them as equals.

Cornered and The Evidence Laid Bare

With Du Cuique now visibly infected herself, standing in the courtyard, Jinlan tells Lanxiang to handle the confrontation. Lanxiang asks directly for the antidote, and Du Cuique feigns confusion and plays innocence, until Lanxiang points out the obvious question she should be asking, how did she end up poisoned at all? The truth comes out plainly, Jinqi never actually bathed that night and in fact heโ€™s not in Zhichun Hall. She used the bath water and re-boiled it to brew tea instead, tea Du Cuique herself drank.

Lanxiang lays out everything she’s pieced together. Jinqi is alive and unharmed, out dealing directly with the very benefactor who gifted Du Cuique those Yunzi stones and the Xinggu gauze she’d been secretly wearing.

Curious how she knows all this, Du Cuique gets her answer immediately: while she was so focused on climbing higher, she never once considered the people beneath her. Everything she ate, wore, or used passed through the hands of lowly maids first. Lingdang poisoning the water, seen by Tongcao. The Yunzi stones, seen by Xiaolian. The Xinggu gauze, noticed by Gantang.

A Sister Exposed

Furious, Xiuwan tries defending Du Cuique, demanding how a mere maid dares speak to her this way, until Xiuru finally steps in and reveals what she witnessed in the cave, exposing her sister’s affair with Du Zheng in front of the entire family. She tries to convince her sister that they are not good people.

Xiuwan’s mother and brother are mortified, and her brother drags her physically away, Xiuru pointedly asking what kind of example she’s setting for her own sisters by defending someone this dangerous.

No Way Out

Lanxiang explains the final piece, Du Cuique poisoned Lingdang directly through her food the moment she suspected betrayal, and Lanxiang simply returned the favour through her tea. There’s no possible way she can outlast First Madam either, since First Madam never actually ingested the poison the way Du Cuique did.

Jinlan praises Lanxiang’s meticulous strategy openly, offering Du Cuique a way out, hand over the antidote now, and the matter ends there, her life debt for Jinqi’s safety considered paid in full.

A Mask Fully Dropped

At that, Du Cuique’s composure shatters entirely. She admits proudly that this was never an illness, it was poison, and she did it deliberately. Devastated, Xiuwan can only watch. Du Cuique reveals she has no antidote to give, she never expected to be poisoned herself, though she does know the recipe, and refuses outright to share it, unafraid of death. Turning cruel, she tells Lanxiang plainly that Yuchan’s impending death is her fault alone, since that poisoned water was always meant for her.

Pressed for a reason, Du Cuique finally lets it all spill out. She hated being looked down on by Madam Qin, and relishes the idea of her dying alongside her daughter as punishment. Even if Jinqi survives, she gloats, he’ll spend the rest of his life knowing he indirectly caused his own mother and sister’s deaths.

Delighted at the thought of everyone infected in the residence is dying because of Lanxiang, she’s met with Lanxiang’s calm correction, she’s wrong, Lanxiang’s already saved them. The only person Du Cuique has actually managed to poison to death is herself. Confused, she has no response before the gates open, revealing First Madam and Concubine Zhou walking in, both fully recovered.

A Cure Already Found

First Madam explains that Nanke’s earlier water sample, combined with expertise in southern medicine, made producing an antidote straightforward. First Madam and Concubine Zhou, only mildly infected, recovered quickly, and everyone else is on the mend too, though it’ll take time. She demands to know why Du Cuique did any of this, having taken her and her brother in so generously while trying to find her a good marriage after she was rejected as Jinqi’s concubine.

Du Cuique scoffs at the very idea, contemptuous of being married off to some struggling farming family only interested in using her ties to the Lin name, forced to claw her way up all over again from nothing.

She wanted wealth and status handed to her, not earned through years of struggle. As a woman, she points out bitterly, she has no real path forward at all, barred from the imperial exams, barred from military service, marriage her only real option, and she refused to settle for anything less than everything.

A Story of a Different Kind of Legacy

Lanxiang responds with a story instead, a young girl once sold as a child bride, fleeing years of abuse to learn weaving from local women. She later taught them techniques that transformed a once-obscure cloth into something renowned throughout the land, revered enough that a shrine was built in her honour.

Her name is still remembered generations later, worshipped even as a patron deity of textile work. Du Cuique falters, unsettled that a woman from nothing could achieve that kind of lasting reverence.

First Madam tells her plainly, the world may indeed be unjust, but that’s no excuse to abandon honour and integrity, consumed instead by greed and the desire for everything to simply fall into place without earning it.

First Madam orders her maids to administer the antidote but Du Cuique violently refuses the outright, choosing death over living with what she’s done. As she is dragged off to face the authorities, she screams a final threat at Lanxiang as she goes, that she’ll haunt her as a ghost forever.

A Fatal Wound

Elsewhere, physicians pull an arrowhead from Du Zheng’s back, the damage to his internal organs already too severe to treat, nothing left but pain relief and waiting.

A Fight Without Answers

During the battle, Du Zheng had attacked Jinqi with real, unrestrained force. Jinqi repeatedly demanding to know why, met only with silence. A flicker of regret crossed Du Zheng’s face the moment he actually wounded him, but he pressed on toward a killing blow anyway, stopped only when Commander Yuan shot him down.

Jinqi looks down on his friend with sadness. Dying, Du Zheng whispers only one thing, asking whether his sister succeeded, whether the Lin family is dead. Jinqi is stunned and left devastated with the full weight of the betrayal finally landing, a man he’d called brother had used him completely.

A Celebration, and a Reunion

That night, First Madam throws the maids a proper thank-you banquet with fine wine, and Lanxiang drinks steadily past her limit. Amid the laughter, Jinqi returns home with Jiugao and Nanke, relieved to hear Yuchan’s pulled through. Spotting them, Lanxiang calls out only for Jinqi to quickly retreat, while the other maids drag the returning men into their own celebratory toasts for the part they played too.

A Quiet, Unguarded Moment

With everyone gone from the room, Jinqi sits beside Lanxiang, telling her plainly that this time, everything came down to her, and he’ll never forget what she did. He offers a toast and he drinks first as a mark of respect, then pours her a glass. She points out it’s her cup he’s using, and when he simply asks, so?, she gives in and drinks quickly, then admits she’s had enough and needs to leave.

He follows her down the corridor, steadying her, and they end up sitting together on the garden steps, taking in the scent of night-blooming orchids. He asks whether she prefers the smell of orchids or silver, and her answer, silver, without hesitation, makes him laugh that she isn’t as drunk as she seemed.

He confides in her about Congyi, devastated, blaming himself entirely for trusting him. Lanxiang tells him plainly he did nothing wrong. She consoles him by telling him that everyone wants a better life, herself included, but a decent person earns that life honourably rather than trampling over others to get it.

He admits he knows he didn’t do anything wrong either, and yet still feels terrible, and she tells him simply, that’s because he’s a good person. Genuinely moved, he tells her he likes hearing her say that, and asks her to say it more often, only to find she’s already fallen asleep against the rocks beside him. The camera pans back across the quiet garden with Jinqi walking away, and by the time it returns, she’s gone too.

Against the Current Episode 18 Recap: My Thoughts

Zheng Hehuizi’s portrayal of Du Cuique was absolutely brilliant in this episode. She turned from sweet, demure Young Madam Du into evil personified. We knew she was up to no good alongside her brother, but watching her actually kill people out of sheer anger was a whole different level of villainy. Anger, smugness, disappointment, panic, envy, straight through to genuine madness, she showed us the full range.

I love a surprise entrance, and when First Madam walked through those doors, I was thrilled. I hadn’t seen that solution coming and was wondering how they’d resolve this crisis. The one part that didn’t quite land for me was the folk story about Huang Daopo. I understand the point being made, but her reaction to something that happened so long ago felt a little disconnected, a more contemporary example might have hit harder and felt more believable in the moment.

Du Zheng’s betrayal was painful to watch. That fight scene carried real, visceral weight, and he just wanted to know why, though in the end, Jinqi never actually got an answer either. Watching the horror set in as Jinqi realized a man he considered a brother had betrayed him this completely, on his literal deathbed no less, was devastating in a way that’s hard to fully put into words.

And what a beautiful way to close things out, watching Jinqi come home to his heroine once again, saving the Lin family from disaster, his open admiration so beautiful. For the first time, we see them interact as true equals despite her drunken state, talking like two ordinary people rather than master and servant. That open ending can only mean one thing, the start of the romance we’ve all been waiting for.

This show continues to pull me in completely, and I haven’t wavered once in my enthusiasm. Excellent pacing, great cinematography, a strong script, and enough plots and subplots to keep us on the edge of our seats throughout. With the Du siblings gone now, I’m excited to see what new storylines emerge next.
