TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Jinqi’s arrest sends the entire Lin family reeling, but this episode ultimately delivers real vindication, exposing the Wo pirate smuggling ring, restoring his standing with the soldiers who once doubted him, and reuniting the family in a warm, well-earned homecoming.
A Marriage Falls Through
Preparing for what should be a joyful visit from the Xie family, Xiuwan learns instead that the wedding negotiations have collapsed entirely. Devastated, she refuses to believe Xie Zhao would abandon her over baseless rumours, insisting there’s no one else she wants.
Second Madam tries comforting her with promises of a better match, but Xiuwan wants nothing but Xie Zhao himself, and the shock of it all leaves her physically shaken. She runs off to seek Jinqi and ask for help.
An Arrest, Right at the Gate
The crisis escalates fast when Jinqi is formally arrested at the residence, accused of colluding with corrupt merchants, harming his own soldiers, and driving Lu Dalang to suicide to cover his tracks. Xiuwan confronts the arresting officer directly, demanding an explanation before they take her brother anywhere, but the order comes straight from the Five Military Commissions.
Jinqi reassures his family calmly before he’s led away, promising he’s done nothing wrong and that the truth will surface soon enough. First Madam collapses from the shock, and the household is thrown into chaos.
Changzheng can’t resist reminding everyone he predicted exactly this outcome the moment Jinqi severed ties with the Zhao family, warning bitterly that they don’t even know if he’ll survive the ordeal.

A Forbidden Visit
Liu Xiaochuan, sixth-rank commander of the Southern City Patrol Office, manages to gain access to visit Jinqi in prison despite Commander Xu having forbidden family visits entirely. He lays out the charges plainly, colluding with corrupt merchants, taking bribes, passing off inferior goods as quality supplies, and recklessly endangering lives.
Worse, the accusation goes further, that fearing the truth would surface, Jinqi led armed men into a private residence to kill witnesses and destroy evidence, driving Lu Dalang to his death.
Jinqi insists he was only trying to bring the man back alive to uncover the truth, but with Lu Dalang dead, there’s no one left to corroborate his account, and even the Central Military Command doesn’t believe him.
Worse News Still
Xiaochuan hesitates, admitting there’s something else he isn’t sure he should share. Jinqi tells him plainly it can’t possibly be worse than what he’s already heard. Xiaochuan reveals that Zhao Xingtang’s already been engaged again, this time to the son of the Deputy Chief Censor, Dai Rong’s own father.
The Censorate, he explains, serves as the Emperor’s eyes and ears, tasked with monitoring and impeaching officials, and it was already bad enough that Jinqi had offended Dai Rong directly. Now, with someone actively whispering in the Censorate’s ear, the Central Military Command has no real choice but to deal with him severely. Xiaochuan admits real fear that more memorials impeaching him could follow, and that the Emperor himself may eventually issue an edict for punishment.
A Second Heartbreak
Xiuwan learns the Xie family has arranged Xie Zhao’s marriage to a Zhao family bride instead, forcing her to accept she must let him go entirely. Her sisters try to comfort her, reminding her that if Jinqi’s name clears, so might her own prospects, though Xiuwan can’t bring herself to fully believe it.
Deciding to take a walk, Xiuwan wanders into the garden and spots a man she believes to be Xie Zhao standing there. Curious what he’s doing, she approaches to talk, while her sisters watch discreetly from a distance, until Xiuru realizes with a start that it isn’t Xie Zhao at all, it’s Du Zheng.
A Realization
Young Lady Du arrives shortly after, telling her brother it’s time to leave. Confused, Xiuwan asks if the two are actually siblings, and Du Cuique confirms it, explaining they need to go pray for Jinqi’s safe return and pay their respects to First Madam Lin.
Left alone with the truth, Xiuwan reflects on the encounter and realizes the man she’d been drawn to was never Xie Zhao at all, and finds herself genuinely relieved, because it means the person she’d actually fallen for was the man himself, not the family name attached to him.
A Coded Signal
Yuchan calls Lanxiang to the study, explaining that Nanke and Jiugao have been out investigating the case, and if they’d uncovered anything significant, they’d send word back in the form of osmanthus cakes, a prearranged signal with clear instructions to follow.
Jinqi had also left behind a message meant for Marquis Yongchang, one Yuchan’s meant to deliver, but she admits plainly she isn’t brave enough to attempt it herself. She was also unsure even how to gain access to him. She turns to Lanxiang for help, and when Lanxiang asks what happens if they fail, Yuchan tells her simply that if anything happens to Young Master, they’re all ruined regardless.
A Message Worth Delivering
Lanxiang comes up with a plan, and the two head out to Jiangdong Gate, reasoning that Marquis Yongchang would likely pass through it on his way home. Sure enough, he does, and as his procession approaches, they sing out Jinqi’s own written message, phrased as a poem drawing on old comparisons between scholarly life and military duty.
The marquis can’t help but stop. Yuchan explains that Young Master Lin has written a letter for him, and he refuses outright, insisting Jinqi is under investigation and no longer his concern, turning to walk away.
Yuchan begs, but he keeps moving until Lanxiang calls out, addressing him directly as Commander Yuan, and reveals plainly that the letter concerns the river defenses. That stops him cold. He takes the letter, reads it, and orders everyone back to camp, taking both maids along with him.
A Trap Sprung on the Water
The letter’s real purpose becomes clear at Longjiang Pass Wharf, where a smuggling ship loaded with cotton and abducted women, lured aboard under false promises of paid weaving work, prepares to sail for Wo country under the guise of avenging Lu Dalang’s death.
Commander Yuan’s naval forces intercept the vessel before it can escape downriver, apprehending the Wo pirates and freeing the captured women, crediting Jinqi’s timely warning for preventing a far worse outcome.
A Reckoning With the Wronged
Released and cleared, Jinqi is met by the very soldiers who’d once doubted him, kneeling to apologize for mistaking a good man for a villain and thanking him for exposing the truth behind their fallen comrades’ deaths. Moved, Jinqi reminds them that seeking justice for his own men was simply his duty, and the men declare their full loyalty to him from that day forward.
A Homecoming, and a Reunion
Back at the residence, the family washes away Jinqi’s bad luck in a traditional ritual, his mother torn between relief and mock exasperation, joking about whether she’s cleansing him or simply beating her own son. Jinqi reassures her he only wants her happiness and his own safety, moved to tears by her open relief.
Learning that Yuchan and Lanxiang still haven’t returned from their errand, having been detained overnight at the naval camp, Jinqi insists on riding out himself to bring them home immediately, refusing to delay even to properly greet Old Master and Old Madam first.
A Debt of Gratitude
Jinqi tells Commander Yuan he’s come for two reasons, first to thank him for everything he’s done, and second to collect the two maids and bring them home. Commander Yuan insists it’s really himself who owes the thanks, since river defence falls directly under his own responsibility, and had that pirate ship reached the open sea, the consequences would have been severe.
Jinqi brushes off the credit, admitting it was his pleasure, and that he’s never forgotten something his own father once told him, the very reason he chose the path of the military over becoming a scholar in the first place.
A Story Too Good to Interrupt
Commander Yuan explains he’d fully intended to send the maids home first thing that morning, but his own soldiers refused to let them go. Confused, Jinqi follows him to see for himself, and finds Lanxiang deep into a tale so gripping the entire room of soldiers sits completely entranced, Jinqi included.
She weaves a story about a beloved horse and the tragic loss of the man who once cared for it, moving the hardened soldiers around her to real tears. Jinqi watches her the whole time, caught somewhere between admiration and genuine surprise.

Against the Current Episode 14 Recap: My Thoughts
Quite a few things of real significance happen in this episode, so let’s start with the Du siblings. Initially I’d suspected Young Madam Du might be the one to watch, someone with ill intentions quietly angling for a better life through Jinqi.
But now, with Xiuwan’s case of mistaken identity finally cleared up, it’s Du Zheng’s clenched fists watching Jinqi’s troops revere him in prison that’s giving off some bad vibes. I wonder if our young master is about to be betrayed from a direction none of us saw coming.
I did feel for Xiuwan here too, losing both her brother’s freedom and her own marriage prospects in the same stretch of episodes is genuinely devastating, though I have a feeling that quiet garden moment with Du Zheng is planting seeds for something more meaningful down the line.
This episode delivers exactly the vindication the last one was building toward. Watching the family’s panic curdle into real relief, and watching Jinqi’s own soldiers kneel to apologize for ever doubting him, said so much about the kind of leader he’s become despite everyone working against him. The whole arc of how Jinqi cleared his name really showcased both his and Lanxiang’s clever instincts working in tandem.
They make such an incredible partnership navigating dangerous, high-stakes problems together, and Lanxiang’s ability to think on her feet, evident in so many moments by this point, is exactly what keeps everyone around her alive and out of real trouble.
I had a small heart attack when the maids hadn’t returned home, but what a wonderful turn of events that followed. Lanxiang’s bluff about the letter’s contents was such a small, sharp moment, guessing correctly under real pressure, with real consequences if she’d guessed wrong.
It’s exactly the kind of quiet resourcefulness that keeps proving itself indispensable to Jinqi’s cause, even when she’s the one paying the price for it, stuck overnight in a military camp for her trouble. Lanxiang’s masterful storytelling abilities clearly captured the hearts of the soldiers, and it would seem, Jinqi’s too! I was completely mesmerized watching that scene play out and I do believe our Young Master has fallen first!
