TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Six years pass as Jialan quietly rebuilds her life as Xu Lanxiang, growing up sheltered by the Xu family’s genuine love even as poverty reshapes everything she once knew. A brilliant act of scholarly deduction finally earns Wanquan real standing, while war brings Lin Jinqi’s name roaring back into her world.
A Careful Escape
Bound for Jinling, Xu Wanquan and Xu Guihua worry aloud over how to keep Jialan’s identity hidden. Wanquan reassures his wife there’s little real risk, she’s grown and changed enough over the years, and her long illness has kept her out of public view besides, so few would even recognize her now.
A Life of Poverty, and Devotion
Back home, the family lives in real poverty, meagre food, small portions, barely enough to get by. Despite it all, the couple dotes on Jialan completely, worried she won’t adjust to a life this different from the one she was born into.
A Wedding That Breaks Her
That same day, a noble family celebrates a wedding, and wedding cakes make their way through town to every household. Spotting the Lin family crest embossed on the cakes, Jialan realizes with a jolt that Lin Jinqi is being married that very day. Completely undone, she breaks down in tears, sobbing to Xu Guihua that she was the one once betrothed to him.
Guihua pulls her into a tight embrace, telling her simply to cry, to let it all out completely. Once she’s spent, Guihua offers her something steadier to hold onto instead, telling her she needs to live now with everything she has, fiercely, like wild grass refusing to be uprooted, living shamelessly and freely from this point forward. From here on, she tells her, there will only be spring, no more winter. Live without care.

Learning to Live Small
Jialan settles slowly into a domesticated life entirely foreign to her, learning to build a fire, cook simple meals, draw water from the well. The Xu family treats her as their own daughter throughout, buying her new clothes, rubbing cream into her hands, finding her ink and paper whenever they can spare it. Their kindness never once goes unnoticed by her.
Six Years Later
Time passes, and Lanxiang grows into a young woman, settled and genuinely happy within the Xu household. She teaches Wanquan to read and write in return for everything they’ve given her. Bullied by a neighbour, she reveals, quietly, just how sharp her mind still is, exacting a subtle, silent revenge without ever raising her voice or drawing attention to herself.
A Debt of Gratitude
Word reaches the family through a merchant that a kind stranger had retrieved the bodies of the entire Shen clan six years earlier, giving them a proper, dignified burial. The family pays their respects to that unknown benefactor, and Jialan quietly vows to repay the kindness one day.
A General’s Victory
On a distant battlefield, General Lin Jinqi defeats the leader of the Japanese pirates outright, and the remaining rebel forces surrender in the aftermath.
A Fake Painting, and a Hidden Fortune
Back in Jinling, Wanquan finds himself in real trouble at Rongbao Pavilion, reprimanded for buying what’s been deemed a fake painting. At home, he tells his wife he now owes five silver taels in restitution, still genuinely baffled that the piece could be counterfeit at all.
He wonders aloud, half despairing, what the point of learning to read and write even was if it’s only gotten him into deeper trouble. Lanxiang isn’t worried in the slightest, and tells him exactly what to do the next time Old Master Lin visits the shop, something he does, without fail, every ten days.
A Painting’s True Nature Revealed
Following her instructions, Wanquan hangs the painting prominently, knowing Old Master Lin’s particular love of landscapes. The shopkeeper, furious at seeing it displayed at all, drags Wanquan in front of everyone, publicly blaming him for the counterfeit purchase. But Old Master Lin, examining it closely, becomes utterly captivated, recognizing a Li Yingqiu cold mountain poem inscribed on the surface, written in lampblack ink, which is exactly what marks the piece as a forgery. And yet, he insists, it’s also somehow genuine.
Steaming away the painting’s top layer reveals the truth, an entirely original work underneath by Scholar Yi’an. Ravaged by war centuries earlier, the only way to protect the real painting had been to disguise it beneath a forged layer, the lampblack poem serving as a deliberate, hidden marker for anyone clever enough to look deeper.
Old Master Lin is overjoyed, stunned that a lowly servant would possess this kind of scholarly insight, calling it nothing short of fate connecting them to a scholar dead two hundred years. He rewards Wanquan handsomely, ten silver taels and a promotion to third shopkeeper.

A Dream of Freedom
That night, the family celebrates properly. Mother Xu brings out every coin she’s saved, insisting they finally have enough to buy Lanxiang’s freedom from servitude. Lanxiang reminds her gently that isn’t quite how it works, since the actual contract belongs to Father Xu, buying his freedom would free his wife and daughter along with him. She wants nothing less than freedom for the entire family, not just herself.
A Son’s Return
In the Lin residence, Master Lin admires a chili pepper plant recently gifted to him, showing it off proudly to visiting acquaintances. Talk soon turns to his son’s bravery defeating Japanese pirates on the battlefield, and Master Lin admits, almost wistfully, that Jinqi only ever turned to the military because he wasn’t quite talented enough to succeed as a scholar. Their conversation is cut short by the return of his son, Lin Jinqi himself, walking back through the gates.
Against the Current Episode 2 Recap: My Thoughts
Those aerial shots of the sampan boats drifting along the river, framed against those bright green chrysanthemum fields, were genuinely beautiful. This episode does such a wonderful job watching Jialan slowly acclimate to a completely new life of poverty and permanent servitude, and the Xus’ constant, genuine worry over whether their meagre means could really provide for her says so much about how deeply they’ve already come to love her.
I loved the way they filmed Jialan’s own footsteps in parallel with the wedding procession, walking the exact timeline of the life that was so violently taken from her. That scene where Xu Guihua comforts her, once she realizes Lin Jinqi is marrying someone else that very day, was genuinely wonderful, and her resolve to keep living fiercely despite everything this poor girl has endured felt so powerful.
We also get real confirmation here of just how sharp Jialan’s mind still is, and how much she’s retained from her old life despite everything stripped away from her. There’s no doubt this intelligence is going to be exactly what carries her, and hopefully her new family too, out of a lifetime of servitude eventually.
Watching this small, domestic family of three simply live together was genuinely beautiful too, and Tan Songyun looked absolutely stunning throughout. So far, so good. I’m completely hooked.
