TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A storytelling reward turns into real recognition for Lanxiang, while a genuine marriage proposal for Xiuwan arrives from an unexpected source. Beneath the warmth, a poisoning at the prison and a secretly ill Yuchan reveal just how far the conspiracy against Jinqi actually reaches, and how much the maids are still willing to risk protecting each other.
A Story Worth Rewarding
Arriving late to collect the two maids from the naval camp, Jinqi learns exactly what kept the soldiers so captivated. Marquis Yongchang tells Jinqi that Lanxiang, on her very first visit to a military camp, showed no fear at all.
Instead chatting easily with her guards and telling them stories of common-born heroes who became soldiers, exactly the kind of tale this audience loved most. One after another, the men had begged the Commander to allow her to stay longer so they could more tales.
Jinqi listens to Lanxiang tell a compelling story as the soldiers are completely mesmerised, as she manages to make grown men weep at the tragic end of the tale. Jinqi is captivated by her as he also watches her with pride.
Genuinely charmed, the marquis remarks that she’s a rather interesting maid, and jokingly offers to buy her outright, prompting Jinqi to deflect smoothly, explaining she was a gift from his own mother and therefore not his to give away.
The marquis needles him lightly over the shifting formality in how he addresses him, “Commander Yuan” when he wants something plainly, “Your Lordship” when he’s being evasive. Jinqi laughs as heโs caught red handed.
A Reward Deferred, Again
Walkng out of the camp, Jinqi suddenly stops and turns to face Lanxiang without saying a word, looking at her with great emotion. Stunned, Lanxiang asks if she had done something wrong but Jinqi reassures her had not and he was merely wondering what reward she would like.
She admits she can’t think of anything, and asks to keep saving up her rewards for later instead. He points out, half teasing, that if she waits too long he might not be able to afford whatever she eventually asks for, and she tells him plainly that whatever she wants, she has no doubt he’ll be able to provide.
A Visit, and a Request
The next day, Xiuwan comes to visit Jinqi now that he’s finally home, both happy to see each other. She tells him warmly how devoted a friend Du Cuique has been, joining her and her brother in offering incense and prayers for his safe return the entire time he was imprisoned.
Grateful, Jinqi thanks her, and Xiuwan mentions Du Cuique plans to return to the temple the next day to fulfill a vow, asking if she might go along. When Jinqi asks what their mother said, Xiuwan admits she’d worn her down entirely, and that permission now rests with him.
He hesitates but agrees, telling her to bring extra maids along, though he can’t help noticing just how quickly this friendship with Du Cuique seems to have deepened.

A Question of Loyalty
Suspicious, Jinqi sends for Lanxiang and asks plainly since when Xiuwan and Du Cuique became so close. She admits she doesn’t know, and he remarks, half amused, that it seems there’s finally something she doesn’t have an answer for. He asks her to keep a discreet eye on the two of them going forward, and she agrees.
A Quiet Moment
Before she leaves, he asks after her wound, and she confirms it’s healing well, admitting it itches only a little. He never quite meets her eyes, buried in his book the whole time, but points her toward a jar of medicine meant for exactly that kind of itch.
Surprised by the small kindness, she steps closer to retrieve it, and the two share a brief, quiet moment before she thanks him and slips out. Only once she’s gone does he finally look up from his book, lingering eyes watching her walk past the window outside.
A Rash, and a Search for Medicine
The next day, working through the household accounts together in the study, Yuchan complains of an itch on her shoulder, and Lanxiang discovers a genuine rash underneath. Remembering Du Cuique keeps anti-itch ointment on hand, she hurries to Luxue Lodge, only to learn Du Cuique and Xiuwan have already left for the temple that morning, not expected back until later.
Told to return once they’re home, Lanxiang notices a chess set on her way out, and picks up one of the stones, translucent enough to see light through. Xiaolian explains Du Zheng bought it specifically because his sister loves the game so much. Curious, Lanxiang asks how long the two young women have actually been this close, and Xiaolian places it right around the time Jinqi was first arrested.
Walking away, Lanxiang can’t shake a quiet unease. A set of Yunzi stones like that would cost a fortune, and she finds herself wondering exactly how Du Zheng could possibly have afforded it.
A Marriage Proposal, From an Unexpected Source
On the way to the Rear Military Command to hear the Wo pirates’ confessions, Commander Yuan has something he wants to ask Jinqi, hesitating over it before finally deciding to speak up anyway. Marquis Yongchang confides in Jinqi about a personal matter weighing on him.
Eight years a widower since Commandery Princess Chenyang’s death, he’s finally ready to remarry, less for romance than for practicality, a stable household for his eleven-year-old daughter as his own mother ages.
Having observed both Jinqi’s character and the discipline of the Lin household’s maids, he wonders aloud whether Jinqi’s still-unmarried younger sister Xiuwan might be a suitable match. Jinqi agrees readily to raise the idea with Aunt Lingxiao himself.
A Poisoning at the Prison
Their conversation is interrupted by grim news from the Rear Military Command’s prison office, twelve Wo pirates have died overnight, poisoned in their breakfast porridge, though only the specific cells holding them were affected, ruling out the shared kitchen staff.
The jailer responsible, Wang Er, is found dead by his own hand shortly after, poison still on his fingers, though Jinqi refuses to believe a man capable of killing so many left no trail behind him at all. Commander Zheng orders Wang Er’s family and associates investigated immediately.
Marquis Yongchang admits the timing troubles him deeply, they’d barely finished preliminary questioning of six pirates before this happened, confirming someone deep inside the imperial court is actively working to bury the truth.
Jinqi points out plainly that even the supposedly secure cells of the Rear Military Command couldn’t keep the conspiracy out. When the marquis needles him gently about being afraid, reminding him of the gap in their respective ranks, hereditary marquis against a newly reinstated assistant commander, Jinqi answers with quiet resolve that his rank was earned on the battlefield, and this investigation will be seen through to the very end regardless of who stands in the way.
A Secret Illness
Back at Zhichun Hall, Yuchan’s supposed rash turns out to be something far more serious, real fever, real weakness, worsening even after Du Cuique’s ointment fails to help. Terrified that First Madam finding out would mean Yuchan’s immediate removal from the residence, cut off from proper food, clothing, and care, the maids debate their options carefully.
A crude self-diagnosis at the apothecary risks the wrong treatment entirely, and approaching Young Lady Du directly, an honored guest, would overstep boundaries a mere maid has no business crossing. Lanxiang ultimately decides to find Jiugao instead, hoping he can quietly bring in a physician he trusts without drawing First Madam’s attention.

A Discreet Intervention
Jinqi intercepts her before she can leave, and once he learns the full situation, insists on handling it himself rather than let it stay hidden. He hands over his own card and sends her straight to Physician Li, the same doctor who regularly checks his grandmother’s pulse, with instructions to have him see Old Madam first as cover before quietly visiting Zhichun Hall afterward. He tells Madam Han to keep the matter entirely private.
A Sister’s Frustration
Meanwhile, Second Madam vents to First Madam over Xiuwan’s growing unhappiness, watching her spend every waking moment with Du Cuique instead of her own sisters, oblivious to how much anxiety her own stalled marriage prospects are causing everyone else in the household. Having already turned down several respectable families in favor of the now-collapsed Xie match, Second Madam worries there’s simply no one left in Jinling comparable to offer Xiuwan instead.
Jinqi arrives at Rongzhang House to deliver the marquis’s proposal formally. Once the shock passes, both Aunt Lingxiao and First Madam are thrilled. Marquis Yongchang’s reputation as capable, respected, and notably free of concubines throughout his first marriage makes this an unusually good match, one many families had hoped for after the Commandery Princess’s death.
His age, thirty-two, and his young daughter are quickly waved off as non-issues, an older husband known to cherish his wife, a daughter who’ll marry out in her own time regardless. Aunt Lingxiao agrees to accept, provided Xiuwan has no objections, and asks for a proper matchmaker to formalize things.
A Refusal, Overruled
Xiuwan, overhearing the excitement, refuses outright, declaring she has no interest in marrying an older man simply to be shown off as a trophy match against the Xie family. Her mother and aunt brush off the protest as nerves, certain any man Jinqi personally approves of couldn’t possibly be unsuitable.
A Quiet Comfort
Elsewhere, Xiuru admits privately to feeling forgotten now that Xiuwan’s attention belongs entirely to Du Cuique, though she insists she doesn’t want her own marriage prospects prioritized at her sister’s expense, resigned to the idea that with nothing especially remarkable about her own virtues or accomplishments, a good match may simply not be in her future. Xiuwan reassures her warmly that she’s wonderful and will absolutely find someone worthy of her.
A Second Rash, and a Real Diagnosis
Meanwhile, Xiushu, Madam Qin’s young daughter, wakes with red rashes of her own, and Physician Li is brought in under the cover of a routine visit. Initially suspecting pollen exposure given the season, he prescribes something simple after ruling out peach blossom contact and diet changes.
But questioned more carefully about her actual symptoms, sudden cinnabar-red patches, fever, weakness, he corrects his diagnosis to erysipelas, a condition caused by pathogenic wind and heat that could progress to abscess or tissue damage if left untreated. Caught early, she’s prescribed a proper course of herbal medicine and ordered to rest with a light diet.
A Servant’s Suspicion
Watching Jinqi’s men move so carefully and secretively to protect the household, one maid remarks quietly that whatever’s really going on, it clearly isn’t good, while Xiuru’s own maid observes how completely Xiuwan’s attention has shifted away from her own sisters and onto Du Cuique alone.
Against the Current Episode 15 Recap: My Thoughts
Oh my goodness, episode 15. What a wonderful way to start things off, ladies and gentlemen, our young master Lin is in love, and he falls first and hard. Over the last few episodes, there’s been such a slow, subtle progression, Jinqi noticing Lanxiang’s selfless requests, her insight into what it means to live in poverty, her willingness to put herself in harm’s way to protect him, all of it culminating in this one scene where he watches her tell stories with open, quiet admiration.
Walking her out of the camp afterward, head down, smiling to himself, he seems to be realizing for the first time that he genuinely has feelings for this maid. I loved that they let this moment breathe, walking slowly enough for us to really savour his happiness, the OST swelling beautifully underneath, while Lanxiang stays completely oblivious, just following her master home. Such a satisfying watch.
That scene where he offers her medicine for the itching, pretending to read his book while refusing to actually look at her, only to drop it the second she walks out and watch her through the window instead, was gorgeous. The music playing under it made the moment land even harder, and the way they framed him gazing after her so adoringly told us everything, he knew, in that instant, exactly what was happening to him, and he was probably a little surprised by it himself.
And then, of course, we’ve got this added complication now with the arranged marriage to Commander Yuan, while Xiuwan’s actually in love with Du Zheng, and Xiuru’s growing suspicious of this sudden closeness with Du Cuique, quietly watching from the background, wary of what it might mean.
I’m loving this second couple pairing between Jiugao and Yuchan too, that small, sweet exchange walking out of camp, him asking why they can’t hold hands or hug anymore the way they used to as kids, was so cute. His obvious concern and stress once she fell ill only adds another fun romantic thread to look forward to.
I’m absolutely loving the pacing of this drama so far. It juggles several plots at once, but the rhythm feels exactly right, never too slow, never too rushed, giving us real room to sit with these beautiful moments rather than racing past them. Watching someone fall for another person this slowly, this genuinely, play out right in front of us is so satisfying, and so completely swoon-worthy. I absolutely love it.
