TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A confession of unshakable love collides with a household crisis, as a mysterious epidemic sweeps through the Lin residence just as the Dai family makes their move against both Marquis Yongchang and Jinqi. With the household sealed off and Jinqi conveniently absent, real suspicion starts building around exactly what Young Lady Du’s presence has to do with any of it.
A Devoted Confession
Xiuru climbs up among the rocks searching for her sister and finds Xiuwan tucked away with Du Zheng inside a cave, the two of them professing love for each other. Du Zheng admits he’d once hoped patience and hard-earned merit might eventually make him worthy of asking for her hand, but with a marquis now in the picture, he can’t imagine ever measuring up, however long he tries.
Xiuwan refuses to accept that logic, insisting she doesn’t care whether they’re a fitting match by rank, she only wants to marry him. When he warns she’ll come to regret giving up a life among high-ranking officials’ wives, she rejects the idea outright, unlike other young ladies, family status has never mattered to her.
Still unable to sway her, he kisses her, and lays her down on the mat, and it’s clear she’s willing to let things go further between them as they get intimate. It’s at exactly that moment that Xiuru finally catches them, and panics at what she’s stumbled onto.

A Playful Diversion
Panicking, Xiuru rushes back to the pavilion, realizing that if Xiuwan’s discovered, she risks getting caught up in the trouble herself. She tells Tongcao to back her up, insisting they’ve been together playing games in the pavilion the entire time, never once separated.
Improvising on the spot, she declares Tongcao’s just lost their game and needs to start barking like a dog. Tongcao complies, barking her way down the path as alert. Fear being caught, Xiuwan and Du Zheng scramble to get dressed, Du Zheng clearly frustrated at losing his chance. On the walk back, Xiuru quietly instructs her maid to head straight for Zhichun Hall the moment Jinqi returns to fetch her.
A Second Diagnosis
Physician Li returns to Lin Residence for a second visit in one day, confirming that Xiushu’s rash has worsened into full erysipelas, the skin turning cinnabar-red, accompanied now by fever. He reassures First Madam that prompt treatment should bring a full recovery and writes out a proper prescription.
Escorting Physician Li way, she quietly flags her own developing rash, and he diagnoses the same condition. Realising heโs chanced upon a possible epidemic, he also tries to brush Lanxiang off as she tries to get more advice from him about Yuchan. He reassures her that the worsening swelling is a normal part of the body releasing pathogenic heat.
A Quiet Homecoming
Jinqi finally returns and Lanxiang prepares his bath. As heโs about to bathe, Young Lady Duโs arrival is announced. He whispers to Lanxiang thatโs heโs exhausted and to send her away. Lanxiang greets Young Lady Du who has come bearing gifts from the Shence Garrison soldiers on her brother’s behalf and was told she would be welcome to wait inside for Jinqi while he bathes. Knowing she would decline, she leaves the gift to Lanxiang.
Alone afterward, he appears at the door and said he had poured a bucket of hot water into the bath with the pretence of making splashing noises and now was too hot. He asks Lanxiang to open the gift of wood ear, dried daylily, red dates, and asks that something practical be prepared in return, nothing extravagant.
A Difficult Confession
Third Young Lady Xiuru arrives unannounced and without her usual maid, clearly distressed. Jinqi tells Lanxiang to stay rather than step out, reasoning she’ll learn the truth eventually. Xiuru struggles to get the words out, insisting repeatedly she isn’t motivated by jealousy toward Xiuwan or trying to speak ill of her, before finally admitting she witnessed something today she wasn’t meant to see. Before she can finish, Jinqi’s attention is pulled away.
A Wound Explained
Noticing blood on him, Nanke explains it isn’t his own. Following a trail through household registers and travel permits, his men have confirmed the Dai family’s involvement in the broader conspiracy, and worse, the Dai family likely already suspects they’re being investigated and may move against Marquis Yongchang imminently.
Jinqi asks Lanxiang to take Xiuru back to her room and that he will speak with her upon his return.
A Convenient Cover Story
As it is past curfew, Jinqi instructs Lanxiang that โhe never left Zhichun Hallโ. Understanding what he needed, Lanxiang said that Young Master was very tired last night, took a bath and went straight to sleep until the morning. Jinqi is impressed by her and tells her that sheโs too clever to be a maid.
A Residence Sealed
By order of the Dรฉfense Command, acting on Duke Xiangguo’s authority, Lin Residence is abruptly sealed off entirely, no one permitted to enter or leave under threat of death, the gate forced shut from the outside as panicked servants scramble for answers.
A Marquis Under Threat
At his own residence, Marquis Yongchang rails against the audacity of the Dai family’s assassination attempt against him, reasoning that with their collusion with Wo pirates edging closer to exposure, eliminating him and his allies is now their only way out of a death sentence.
Jiugao arrives with devastating news, the Imperial Medical Service has reported an epidemic breaking out inside Lin Residence itself, prompting Duke Xiangguo to have it surrounded by troops, no one permitted in or out, a servant already shot dead for attempting to flee. Jinqi realizes immediately that word reaching Duke Xiangguo this quickly means Dai Rong orchestrated the whole thing.
Grateful he’d slipped out of the residence just before the lockdown, Jinqi sends Nanke back inside discreetly to assess the real situation and reassure First Madam, while he works from outside to bring in proper imperial physicians.
Marquis Yongchang proposes turning the enemy’s own scheme against them, staying visibly exposed himself while Jinqi remains hidden, luring the Dai family into a trap of their own making.
A Household in Panic
Inside, the sight of Yuchan’s condition, skin ulcerated across her hands, face, and neck, sends the maids into open panic, whispering fearfully about whether she’ll survive at all. Reporting to First Madam, Lanxiang takes responsibility for not escalating the illness sooner, having initially mistaken it for a minor rash and following Young Master’s own instruction not to disturb the household unnecessarily.
First Madam absolves the maids of blame, no one could have foreseen an actual epidemic, and turns her attention to practical crisis management instead, converting every available room in Zhichun Hall to house the family together for safety and mutual care.
Every courtyard is locked down, gates opened only for meal deliveries, and the family consolidates into Zhichun Hall while the ill are moved to Fengqi Courtyard for isolation. First Madam scolds Second Madamโs household for bringing far more luggage and staff than instructed, trimming down to only essential attendants.

A Question of Leadership
With Jinqi mysteriously absent and First Madam needing to split her attention toward Rongzhang House to tend Xiushu, the family debates who should take charge. Some assume Second Young Master Jinlan should naturally step up, though his mother worries the responsibility may be too much for him alone due to his poor health.
This prompts First Madam to settle on a practical compromise. Jinlan oversees in name, while Madam Han and Lanxiang, the two people Jinqi trusts most, actually manage the real work.
A Volunteer Steps Forward
Young Lady Du offers her own medical knowledge to help examine Xiushu and the other patients, framing it as a chance to ease suffering while proper physicians remain locked out. Praised for her courage in a moment when others would flee, First Madam almost accepts until Lanxiang deliberately drops her blue hairpin to the ground, making a small show of retrieving it, just enough to catch First Madam’s attention.
Du Cuique notices too. The gesture jogs First Madam’s memory back to Du Cuique’s earlier larkspur scheme, and understanding immediately that this offer may be another quiet attempt to work her way closer to Jinqi, she politely declines, citing the late hour and everyone’s exhaustion, reasoning the physicians will arrive soon enough regardless.
Against the Current Episode 16 Recap: My Thoughts
Interesting, in this episode we see that Xiuwan and Du Zheng are already together, I’d thought perhaps they were still just courting, but they’re actually having an affair, and for Xiuwan to nearly give herself to him fully would have been a massive mistake.
Thankfully Xiuru was smart enough to notice. Du Zheng is clearly up to no good, trying to wrangle his way into the Lin residence just like his sister, and you can tell from how disappointed he looked when he didn’t manage to get intimate with her, likely hoping to get her pregnant to force the family’s hand.
There were a few small romantic moments between Jinqi and Lanxiang too, mostly on his part, whispering in her ear, touching her shoulder. I have to say, that scene where she walks back into the room with the gift and he’s leaning against the bath doorway, arms crossed, asking what’s inside, he looked so commanding and handsome.
The epidemic arc is interesting, and that plot continues to simmer. I imagine it’ll carry on for a couple more episodes as the Dai family works to eliminate both Commander Yuan and Jinqi.
And that very subtle detail with the dropped hairpin, used as a quiet warning, was so clever. The moment Du Cuique offered to go check on Xiushu, I immediately thought, oh no, this reeks of trouble, and even Xiuru seemed to panic. Thankfully First Madam was sharp enough to pick up on the hint and quietly decline the offer.
Yet another great episode. We’re at sixteen now, and I don’t feel like it, I’m not worn out, I’m not feeling drawn out at all, just excited for the next one. Every episode still feels like it’s only ten minutes long to me, and I always wonder where the time went.
I’m so glad this show runs forty-seven episodes and was allowed to extend past the usual forty-episode limit, because I’m nowhere near ready for this to end, or to have these characters off my screen.
