TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A carefully staged Festival of Man gathering turns into a minefield of matchmaking, jealousy, and near-scandal, all while First Madam works overtime to keep the household’s reputation intact. A hidden larkspur ornament nearly derails everything for Jinqi, saved only by Lanxiang’s sharp observation, though her reward this time comes wrapped in real suspicion.
Setting the Trap
Old Master Lin relents and suggests inviting the Xie family to the Festival of Man, ostensibly to admire flowers, though the withered plum blossoms make paintings a more sensible excuse instead. Rather than an obvious matchmaking event, he proposes a broader gathering, inviting all the young men their age with shared interests, Jinlan and Jinqiao sending invitations together.
The Zhao family gets an invitation too, purely for propriety’s sake, whether they actually attend is entirely up to them. Everyone understands the real purpose, First Madam’s already planning matches for Cuique and Xiuru this year as well.
A Household on High Alert
Preparations for the gathering turn into a full security operation. First Madam and Second Madam lecture the household staff on locking every unnecessary door and stationing stern servants at every entrance.
They warn them that any impropriety today, a stray handkerchief, an unsupervised encounter, could spark gossip severe enough to force an unwanted match on any of the young unmarried guests present. Second Madam is especially blunt, with her only daughter Xiuwan’s reputation on the line, any failure today will fall squarely on the servants responsible.
Games, Gossip, and Growing Tension
During the festivities, archery teams compete while the women trade tea and gossip. Niu Fan needles Xiuru with rumours that Zhao Xingtang’s already being courted by someone even more powerful than Xiuwan’s own brother, and Xiuwan, furious, nearly starts a fight in front of everyone before backing off, later scolding her timid sister for staying silent through the insult.
Meanwhile, confusion over identities runs rampant. Second Young Master Xie, dressed in a distinctive teal robe with a plum blossom ornament, gets pointed out to Xiuwan as her prospective match, though she ends up admiring the wrong man entirely thanks to a last-minute clothing swap after an accident near the washing area.
The real Xie Zhao, courtesy name Xianzhang, finds the archery games tedious and unrefined, and strikes up an immediate rapport with Lin Jinlan over shared literary interests instead, the two agreeing to abandon the physical games in favour of a poetry-and-drinking contest matching classical texts to medicinal herb names.
A Discovery Among the Books
Airing old books out on tables in the courtyard, Lanxiang comes across an illustration of a flower called larkspur, and something clicks. She remembers Young Lady Du’s earlier gift to Jinqi, a box of flower ornaments including a hairpin, and Yuchan specifically setting that hairpin aside as perfect for him to wear during the Man Festival.
Then the realization lands fully, Cuique is the Chinese word for larkspur. She also recalls Du Cuique once mentioning, quietly, that she wanted to start over and live a better life this time around.
Alarmed, Lanxiang rushes to find First Madam Lin, but security around the gathering is far too tight. She runs into Gantang, who confirms she can’t even get outside the residence grounds. The two hide behind some rocks trying to figure out a plan, only for a pellet to strike Lanxiang’s head, she turns to find Fourth Master Lin Jincen perched in a tree above them with a slingshot.
The Trap Springs
The men settle into their own contest, trading poetry lines that double as the names of medicine, each side forced to drink whenever they’re outdone. They continue to go back and forth until Xie Zhao finally runs out of clever material to draw from.
Xie Zhao spots the larkspur ornament in Jinqi’s hair and is immediately inspired for yet another clever line, as he correctly identifies the flower by its classical name, explaining its rarity as a foreign medicinal herb. The room realizes almost simultaneously that the flower โCuiqueโ shares its name with Young Lady Du, and the assumption spreads instantly that Jinqi and Du must already be secretly engaged. Panic ripples through Jinqi, Jinlan and Du Zheng, who understand the implications.
Salvation arrives just in time, both Old Master Lin and Master Lin appear wearing identical larkspur hairpins of their own. Relieved, Jinqi announces plainly that he had no idea what flower he was even wearing, only that it was a gift from his grandfather and therefore mandatory to wear.
Old Master Lin plays along, mock-scolding his grandson for knowing nothing about farming or the true value of the larkspur plant, while Xie Zhao is praised for enlightening everyone. Old Master Lin then gifts the same flower pin to every guest present, neutralizing the entire scheme in one smooth gesture.

A Suspicious Gift
Elsewhere, First Madam summons Young Lady Du privately, having discovered a larkspur flower ornament among the gifts given to Jinqi, and demanding to know how it got there given the flower shares her given name, Cuique.
Du, completely distressed, insists plainly she’d never do anything as improper as privately exchanging gifts without a matchmaker, and suggests the mix-up must have happened when Xiaolian packed the festive ornaments that day, since Du herself never touched the box from start to finish. First Madam calms Young Madam Du and tells her it was an honest mistake.
Consequences Handed Down
The four maids are called in for questioning, and as the others kneel, First Madam Lin tells Lanxiang to remain standing. She’s furious this near-disaster could have cost the Lin family’s reputation entirely, taking in a young lady whose brother saved their son’s life, only to have it spiral into improper rumours and a forced concubinage.
Xiaolian, takes full blame herself, insisting she simply didn’t recognize what kind of flower it was and may have packed it by mistake, offering elaborate self-punishment, starvation, extra beatings, anything to prove her honesty. The maids are punished with slaps to the wrist, six months’ docked pay, and three days of enforced hunger for Xiaolian specifically.
A Reward, Wrapped in Suspicion
Lanxiang alone is rewarded, two gold ingots this time, though First Madam instructs her to tell everyone she only received ten silver taels, to avoid stirring jealousy among the other maids.
When Lanxiang asks if she might sacrifice one ingot to reduce the others’ punishment, First Madam refuses outright, though she promises the finest medicine will follow their beatings regardless. Lanxiang also asks whether Gantang, who’d been with her throughout the discovery, will be recognized too, and First Madam confirms she will.
A Message Delivered
Unable to reach First Madam Lin directly, Lanxiang works her way to her through Jincen instead, promising to find him someone who can craft the perfect slingshot for hunting any bird he wants, in exchange for him delivering a book to his grandfather.
Once Old Master Lin receives it, he summons Lanxiang and explains the situation plainly, believing it’s already too late to salvage anything given Jinqi’s already out there wearing the hairpin in front of everyone. It’s Lanxiang who offers the clever fix, have every man at the gathering wear one instead, burying the significance entirely.
A Favour Traded for a Slingshot
Fourth Young Master Jincen reveals to Jinqi how the larkspur discovery actually reached the family in time, Lanxiang had approached him directly, using the promise of a masterfully crafted slingshot from her neighbourhoodโs Uncle Liu, capable of hitting almost any bird, in exchange for delivering a book straight to Grandfather Lin.
Jincen, thrilled at the prospect, agreed without hesitation, unaware of the book’s real significance until his grandfather immediately summoned Lanxiang and Nanny Wu the moment he opened it.

A Question of How
Jinqi presses Lanxiang directly, curious how she’d recognized the larkspur illustration at all, let alone connected it fast enough to Young Lady Du’s private collection at Luxue Lodge. She explains plainly, Yuchan had entrusted her with airing out a box of older, less important books as part of learning to manage the study properly, and the illustration simply happened to match the very ornament he was wearing that day. Even Old Master admitted he hadn’t thought of such an elegant solution himself in the moment it was needed most.
Against the Current Episode 11 Recap: My Thoughts
In this episode we get introduced to the rest of the kids in the Lin family, and this whole setup of the games among the men was just ingenious. I have to say, the moment Young Madam Du was introduced, I knew she was going to be trouble, that something was bound to go wrong, and that she was going to try and wrangle her way into Young Master Lin now that he’s single.
I’m loving watching how much effort it takes to protect a family’s reputation during something as innocent-sounding as a flower festival. First Madam and Second Madam’s whole security operation felt tense, and it says so much about how fragile a young woman’s marriage prospects really were in this world, undone by something as small as a flower ornament.
As usual, Lanxiang is perceptive, and she saves the day in the best possible way, working through the obstacle in front of her and then providing the actual solution to fix it. The real highlight here is watching her solve yet another crisis before anyone else even realizes there’s a problem. By using Jincen’s love of bird hunting, she smuggles a critical clue straight to Old Master Lin, so clever and exactly the kind of resourceful, invisible problem-solving she’s built her whole survival around. I love that whole scene where she’s rewarded so generously for her efforts too.
At the end of the episode, though, you see Young Master Lin questioning Lanxiang about how all this actually came about, and instead of gratitude, you see real suspicion. Perhaps it’s born from disbelief that a maid could be this perceptive, or maybe he was simply too proud to say thank you outright, though I don’t actually believe that’s the case, he seems like a gentleman.
I do think it’s telling that her reward this time comes bundled with real suspicion rather than pure gratitude, First Madam clearly recognizes just how unusually sharp this particular maid is, and I have a feeling that recognition is going to cut both ways for Lanxiang going forward.
And Xiuwan mistaking Du Zheng for Young Master Xie is also going to cause some complications, I’m sure, which is going to make things difficult for Young Master Lin, because now the very siblings he’s taken into the residence are going to end up causing far more trouble than they’re worth.
