This stretch pushes into some of the heaviest territory the series has covered so far. The fiefdom clause turning a marriage announcement into another quiet tragedy

Drumming scenes used to depict battles comes to the forefront of ridicule and humiliation. Here we also witness the Emperor’s horrific cruelty and a comedic bridal suite lockup

Song Yi Meng’s sympathy for Nan Heng builds fast through the fire, the Emperor’s cruelty, and her own guilt-driven apology

The assassination plan collapses into chaos on the pleasure boat, but somewhere in the chaos, something genuinely shifts between Song Yimeng and Nan Heng, a wish, a moment of vulnerability, and a fire he runs into to save children pull real feelings to the surface for both of them.

Nan Heng discovers Minister Gao was behind the mine explosion, then gets both Song Yimeng and Chu Guihong to lay out their separate plans to assassinate him, using the information to stay one step ahead.

Song Yimeng finally tells Li Shiliu the full, painful history behind Nan Heng and Chu Guihong’s rivalry, the assassination of the late Empress and the torture a young Nan Heng suffered afterward, but it backfires when Li Shiliu accuses her of being blinded by love for Chu Guihong.

Li Shiliu gets pulled deeper into a tangled web of his own making as both Song Yimeng and Chu Guihong try to recruit “him” against Nan Heng himself, for completely opposite reasons.

Song Yimeng’s hunt for a fake blade leads her into a trap at Vicious Moonlight, headquarters of the Waning River Crescent Guild/Night Wanderers, where she meets their masked leader Li Shiliu.

Nan Heng realizes his compulsion to save her is a dangerous weakness he can’t let anyone discover, while Chu Guihong showers Song Yimeng with devotion and a protective jade amulet.

Chu Guihong escapes prison to rescue Song Yimeng, and Nan Heng reveals it was a trap all along, forcing a forest showdown where the script repeatedly overrides his murderous intentions to save her instead.
