It’s not that her wariness is unreasonable, it’s that she keeps defaulting to his reputation over what she’s actually witnessed firsthand.
A Dream Within a Dream Recap: Episode 14
The Music Banquet Episode Setup
Nan Heng hosts a music banquet, ostensibly out of novelty, but really as an excuse to funnel funds to Vicious Moonlight through his Li Shiliu persona. Meanwhile the fake romance book keeps stirring rumours about Song Yimeng and Nan Heng, worrying her father enough that he wants her married off to Chu Guihong as soon as possible.
There’s a small but important shift here too, her father mentions Nan Heng’s hard childhood, which gets Song Yimeng quietly reconsidering everything Nan Heng told her about being misunderstood.
A Dream Within a Dream Drumming Scene
Seated together, Nan Heng needles Chu Guihong by implying Song Yimeng had dined at his residence before, backed up by guests referencing the fake book for “proof.” She shuts both men down publicly, declaring she has no interest in either of them and that the book is entirely fabricated.
The real centrepiece is the drumming competition. Nan Heng, plans to bait Chu Guihong into embarrassing himself so as to lose flavour with Song Yimeng. To do so, Shang Guanhe proposes a drum performance to depict the defeat of the Battle of Pingrong with Fu Gui dressing up as a fool to represent Chu Guihong. Nan Heng is unhappy by the ridicule and was not entirely what he had in mind when it came to embarrassing Chu Guihong.
Song Yimeng, upset on Chu Guihong’s behalf, takes over the drums herself to restore honour to him and his army, and in a genuinely moving moment, Nan Heng joins her, drumming the old Xuanjia Army battle rhythm from behind her as memories of the actual war come flooding back.
Chu Guihong then performs his own version from his side of that battle, calling out that reinforcements and carrier pigeons never arrived, a pointed dig back at Nan Heng. He wins, pins the ceremonial hairpin into Song Yimeng’s hair, and asks for her hand in marriage on the spot, only for Po Yunlong and, shortly after, Noble Consort Gao herself to object in person.
The Political Fallout
The old Empress had actually arranged a betrothal between Nan Heng and Song Yimeng before her death, which throws the whole proposal into chaos. News spreads fast, the fake romance book releases a new chapter to match, and Noble Consort Gao formally presents betrothal gifts on the Gao family’s behalf.
Nan Rui, furious, lashes out at his brother for constantly manipulating things and insults the Gao family outright. Nan Heng warns him to stop, grabs him by the throat when he doesn’t, and Nan Rui responds by slashing him across the back. Both Nan Heng and Song Yimeng are then summoned to the palace by the Emperor.
Waiting on the Emperor
Kneeling outside the Imperial Reading Chamber, Nan Heng quietly slips his own robe under her knees before she has to kneel on the bare floor, a small, unspoken act of care in the middle of all the political chaos.
Song Yimeng’s Feelings Are Out in the Open
By episode’s end, Song Yimeng and her maids are openly discussing her telling Chu Guihong she has no feelings for him, because her heart is clearly with Li Shiliu instead. No more denial at this point, it’s out.

A Dream Within a Dream Recap: Episode 15
The Emperor’s Twisted Justice
The Emperor blames Song Yimeng for the fight between the princes, accusing her of lacking virtue for pursuing a prince while still engaged, and sentences her to 20 lashes. Nan Heng barges in and takes the blame for everything, the pursuit, the fake book, even the marriage decree, none of which were really his doing to that extent, just to protect her.
The Emperor punishes him instead, ordering his arm cut off for supposedly striking Nan Rui first, even though it was Nan Rui who drew first. It’s revealed as a cruel joke at the last second, followed by the Emperor strangling him, which Nan Heng simply allows. Watching this twisted double standard play out is what finally starts cracking Song Yimeng’s assumptions about him wide open.
Locked In Together
After the horrific encounter with the Emperor, Nan Heng is told his mother fainted. As they go to see her, they are tricked and the Noble Consort has them locked in a bridal suite in hope of them getting together.
Alone, Song Yimeng presses Nan Heng on why he took the blame and whether he’d really have let his arm be cut off. He admits he’s been gambling with obedience his whole life, hoping it would spare him.
When she chalks his protectiveness up to a “script mechanism” forcing him to save her, he’s genuinely hurt, since for him it was real care, not obligation, and he’s tired of being misread. Small tender beats follow the overnight stay: he gives her his blanket, tends to her knees with medicine that smells suspiciously like the ointment “Li Shiliu” used on her before, and finally asks outright if she has feelings for the martial artist. She denies it while visibly blushing.
The Rescue Attempt
Fu Gui, Chu Guihong, and her father sneak into the palace in disguise to get her out, though it’s ultimately Noble Consort Gao who steps in properly, standing up to the Emperor directly and defending Song Yimeng’s place in the Gao family.
The Breakup
With the wedding date to Chu Guihong now set, Song Yimeng returns his jade amulet and ends things outright, telling him she doesn’t want to marry him. It’s a hard scene given everything the two of them have shared, but she runs before he can respond, caught between changing her fate and defying an imperial decree.

A Dream Within a Dream Recap: Episode 16
Chancellor Gao’s Backup Plan
Chancellor Gao meets with Nan Heng about the Song marriage, casually suggesting the younger sister as an alternative, his real motive being to derail the Song-Chu alliance entirely.
A Case of Mistaken Assumptions
Song Yimeng convinces herself Li Shiliu isn’t interested in her because he’s secretly involved with Shang Guanhe, and gets drunk on a rooftop at midnight to drown the sorrow of it. Li Shiliu tracks her down and does everything short of taking a wine bottle to the face trying to convince her otherwise.
He decides to tell her that he is not interested in men by covering her eyes, removing his mask, and kissing her, shot beautifully from a distance on the rooftop. The catch: she’s already fallen asleep and won’t remember any of it. He just shrugs it off and lets her sleep, still convinced in her mind the next morning that he’s simply not interested in women.
Song Yiting’s New Crush
Song Yimeng’s sister spots Li Shiliu running across the rooftop that same night and instantly falls for him, going as far as agreeing to a date with Nan Rui purely as an excuse to visit Vicious Moonlight. Nan Rui misunderstands this as her being interested in him finally.
To her credit, she’s sharper than she looks, she clocks quickly that Nan Rui’s interest in her is shallow and self-serving, more about her surname than her. Bambi Zhu as Song Yiting is highly convincing.
Chu Guihong Closes In
Chu Guihong confronts Nan Heng at Vicious Moonlight over the blade forging method, and it’s here he learns Song Yimeng has actually called off their engagement. Chu Guihong is determined to their marriage continues. Li Shiliu makes a bet with Chu Guihong that the wedding with formally be cancelled within ten days.
The Breakup Fallout
Nan Heng offers to help Song Yimeng break off the engagement for good, using Li Shiliu’s mechanical arm as leverage, an implied threat that he could take his own life at any time if the political tides turn against him once she marries Chu Guihong. In the process, she admits out loud, for the first time, that she likes Li Shiliu, which visibly pleases him.
He takes her horse riding at the imperial training grounds, fully aware word will get back to the Emperor that they were seen together. While riding, he opens up about his brutal childhood, bullied, underfed, thrown into fire, poisoned, and for the first time she genuinely feels sympathy rather than suspicion.
Chu Guihong shows up mid-ride, and Nan Heng deliberately pulls her into an embrace right in front of him, provoking Chu Guihong into firing an arrow his way, one his own attendant can’t stop in time.

A Dream Within a Dream Episodes 14-16 Recap: My Thoughts
Lots to unpack over these 3 episodes. The Emperors cruelty and Nan Hengโs blind obedience was heartbreaking. You watch a man of great courage and authority being reduced to such a low level no doubt shocked Song Yimeng into understanding who he is.
The tonal whiplash right after genuinely bothered me. We go from something as brutal as the Emperor’s cruelty toward Nan Heng straight into a cutesy, comedic bridal-suite lockup, and it felt like the show didn’t trust me to sit with the heavier moment for more than a scene before cutting the tension. I get that this drama likes mixing tones, I’ve made peace with that by now, but this particular whiplash felt like it undercut something that deserved a bit more room to breathe.
And by episode 16, I’ll be honest, Song Yimeng’s continued suspicion of Nan Heng was genuinely testing me as a viewer. It’s not that her caution is unreasonable given everything she’s been taught to believe about him, I get the logic.
It’s that she has real, firsthand evidence in front of her now, his actual childhood, his actual intentions, and she keeps defaulting back to his reputation instead of what she’s personally witnessed. I found myself talking to the screen a little during that horse riding scene, willing her to just believe what’s right in front of her for once.
