A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 3 Recap

Song Yimeng takes her scripted tumble into the lake, and Nan Heng dives in to save her, kicking off a forced, dramatic Nan Heng and Song Yimeng first kiss neither of them chooses on their own, courtesy of the script’s control over them.
Nan Heng starts wooing her to get closer to the Song family and their connection to a blade forging method he wants. Meanwhile while Song Yimeng, realizing she’s the only one who knows what’s coming, tries to steer events and only narrowly avoids a knife to the throat by proving she knows details from deep in his future.
The Lake Scene, Finally
Song Yimeng runs intoJia Ru Ru, her character’s established rival, and tried to provoke her by claiming Nan Heng intended to marry her, a taunt that backfired and led to the fall instead.
Song Yimeng takes her tumble into the lake, and it’s shot beautifully, deep water, gorgeous side panning, the whole cinematic package. Nan Heng dives in to save her, but true to form she tries to swim away rather than play along with the script, which gets genuinely funny, especially her noting that even underwater he still manages to look smug.
Once he pulls her out, the script tries to force the classic dramatic cloak sweep moment, him wrapping his robe around her shoulders, and she dodges it entirely. Trying to steer her own narrative, she tells him flat out to stay away, accusing him of only saving her to worm his way into the Song family. He agrees, coldly, telling her that next time he won’t bother saving her at all.
She tries to walk off, but the script has other plans. That dreaded typing sound kicks in and drags the story back on course. Suddenly she’s locking pinky fingers with him, going full cutesy (genuinely irritating to watch, in the best way), and blurting out that she wants to marry him.
The typing sound hits again, and she kisses him in front of a crowd. He’s exasperated and pulls away, only for the typing sound to force the scene to finish properly. He turns back around, fully “in love” as scripted, and kisses her again, this time slow motion, spotlighted, camera panning, the full romantic drama treatment. OMG he’s such a good kisser!
Once the kiss goes public, it becomes the biggest scandal in the capital, with headlines mocking “Nan Heng’s lost innocence” doing the rounds, and in a genuinely funny detail, replicas of the hairpin she was wearing that day instantly sell out as a fashion trend.
Only she knows the script, which means she’s not just trying to outmanoeuvre him, she’s fighting the story itself, since it keeps engineering situations neither of them actually chooses, like this kiss.
Nan Heng’s Angle
Fu Gui tells Nan Heng that General Chu, technically engaged to Song Yimeng, is in love with her and has been refusing marriage or concubines while he waits. Nan Heng’s response is calculated: spread word of the kiss scandal specifically to make Chu jealous.
Chancellor Gao returns, and Nan Heng tells him he wants the Chu family’s blade forging method, passed down from the previous dynasty, for his own army. Gao assumes this means Nan Heng is planning a revolt, and suspects the method might have been shared with Song Yimeng through her letters with Chu. Nan Heng is thrilled to hear it, since it gives him yet another reason to pursue her.
The Wooing Begins
He starts sending gifts, she rejects them, he escalates. His whole arrogant, smug energy is doing a lot of work here, mostly through his eyes. Meanwhile Song Yimeng is clearly enjoying playing the “refined noble lady” while being, underneath it all, a completely unrefined modern city girl, snacking on tanghulu and carrying herself in ways that don’t quite fit the part. It’s a genuinely funny contrast, helped along by good comedic scoring and camera work.
Nan Heng eventually goes straight to Minister Song and tells him they have mutual feelings, requesting permission to marry her. She’s called in to discuss it, and tries to shut the whole thing down by claiming he behaved inappropriately toward her at the Imperial Garden.
Blade Forging Method Plot and the First Real Alliance
Nan Heng, still suspicious of the pinky finger promise from earlier, tries it a second time to test whether he’s genuinely being controlled, and it doesn’t work, which only makes him more convinced she’s manipulating him. This is the first real moment of danger in the drama. He’s angry that she’s denying it and seemingly ungrateful for being saved from the lake, and pulls a knife on her.
She tries to talk him down by explaining that an external force, effectively the screenwriter, is controlling all of them, and to prove it she recounts painful details from his own childhood and past. This included his friendship with Chu Guihong, and how it soured after the death of the late Empress.
He isn’t convinced at first, pointing out those stories are fairly well known and could have come from anyone. So, she pulls out her strongest card, a detail she remembers from much later in the script, episode 38, where he threatens Minister Song for the letters exchanged between her and General Chu, all in pursuit of the very blade forging method he wants now.
That’s the detail that finally lands. He’s genuinely shocked she knows something that specific, and the two of them become allies from here, with her now tasked with tracking down the method for him.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 3 Recap: My Thoughts
And there we have it! The famous A Dream Within a Dream underwater rescue kiss so early in the series. The lake sequence is beautifully shot, and the comedy of her actively resisting the script (swimming away, dodging the cloak sweep) lands well.
The forced kiss script mechanism is where this episode really shines though, dramatic, romantic, shot like the show knows exactly what kind of moment it’s selling. Including her joking that it’s technically his first kiss and how innocent that makes him. The cutesy pinky-promise bit is a little irritating to sit through, but in a way that feels intentional rather than bad writing.
