A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 1 Recap

A struggling actress gets pulled into the world of the period drama script she’s filming, waking up as the tragic heroine right on her wedding day. Both the in-script world (a wedding that spirals into a three-way killing) and the real-world film set (a boardroom fight over rewriting the script) get set up fast, alongside a preview of the doomed, trope-heavy fate waiting for her character down the line. This Li Yitong and Liu Yuning cdrama starts off with a strong, funny opening episode that earns some trust despite a rocky-sounding premise.
The Wedding That Kicks Everything Off (Script World)
We open inside the drama within the drama, and it wastes zero time. The first two minutes are already high paced and high stakes.
Song Yimeng and Nan Heng are getting married and there’s already drama, because she’s marrying him while actually in love with General Chu Hui Gong. Then the general shows up to stop the marriage, and it spirals into a three-way killing. Genuinely fantastic opening and visually stunning.
Real Life Behind the Curtain (Modern World)
Back in reality, the show being filmed is called “A Dream in the Past” and the director, screenwriter, actors, and agents are all in a boardroom hashing out the script’s problems.
Mega star Nan Feng‘s (Nana Heng’s modern actor’s name) agent is not having it. She wants to know why his character is being written as a fool and pushes for him to get better highlights and more charming moments. She’s genuinely good in this scene, funny without trying too hard to be funny, while Nan Feng himself doesn’t say a word and just leans into playing the arrogant A list star. The director ends up asking the screenwriter to rewrite the wedding and love triangle scene to satisfy her.
Song Xiao Yu (Song Yimeng’s modern actress’s name), meanwhile, is the opposite: a low tier actress about to get her first real breakthrough. She was a child actor who grew up and then couldn’t land anything.
Sneak Peek: Future Chaos (What She Imagines While Reading)
Song Xiao Yu is flipping through the script and picturing how it all plays out, which gives us a highlight reel of where this is headed. Fifteen minutes in, there’s already a knight in shining armour moment where he saves her from being pushed into a lake, and the first real romantic beat happens when he brushes her hair from her face, played a little funny and clearly not meant to feel genuine yet.
By episode 10, at the lantern festival, Nan Heng sprints at full speed to save Song Yimeng from falling fire lanterns, complete with deliberately cringe lines and a “lift chin” romance poster moment that’s quite funny, ending with her hugging him.
Episode 17 has Song Yimeng declaring her love for the Nan Heng and walking away from her family rather than marry the general, full hopeless romantic mode.
Episode 22 gets darker: Song Yimeng catches her Song Yiting having an affair with Nan Heng, he slaps her in a moment that looks disturbingly real, and it’s also the first Nan Heng kiss scene, though not with her.
Episode 37 brings a stunning visual, her in a long thick red robe against the snow, as the general’s revenge plays out. She and a concubine, both pregnant, are about to be thrown off a gate. He releases an arrow, the concubine gets pushed and saved, and the slow flowing costumes make the whole thing beautiful even as she jumps and everyone just watches.
Episode 39 has her surviving, only to end up tortured in a ceramic pot, treated as human swine.
Basically, the plot itself sucks. But the rescues are genuinely fun to watch, with him flying across at high speed every time to save her.
Transmigration Into A Script
Back in the present, a storm rolls in, and she goes to shut the window, only to get sucked straight into the world of the script. And the transmigration into a script drama kicks off quick!
She wakes up in the Song Residence, and it’s her wedding day, except this time she’s actually marrying General Chu by decree, unlike the opening scene. From here she keeps having accidents and dying, kicking off an infinite loop where the same scene repeats over and over.
She retains her memories across the resets, so she has to keep finding new ways to avoid dying each time. This part is genuinely very funny.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 1 Recap: My Thoughts
Fifteen minutes in and the acting already sells it. The cinematography during the in-script period scenes is fantastic, especially the fabric curtains flowing in the wind to signal that the Nan Heng can’t be trusted, and the aerial shot of the town is gorgeous.
The actress is stunning and the male second lead is easy on the eyes too. The Groundhog Day concept is such a cool idea and it’s working from the get go. Pacing is good, the transition between period and modern world is smooth, and the comedy lands because it’s well paced rather than forced.
Went in expecting I wouldn’t like it as much because I read it was heavy on the comedy, which is not my vibe, especially for a Chinese period drama. But came out surprised. I’m watching because of the great ratings, because I love Liu Yuning, and because word is the ending is one of the best in cdrama land.
