A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 10 Recap

The assassination plan collapses into chaos on the pleasure boat, but somewhere in the chaos, something genuinely shifts between Song Yimeng and Nan Heng, a wish, a moment of vulnerability, and a fire he runs into to save children pull real feelings to the surface for both of them. By the end of the episode, Nan Heng is clearly falling first, while Song Yimeng starts seeing “support character” Li Shiliu in a very different light.
The Pleasure Boat
Song Yimeng leads Nan Heng to the pleasure boat as planned, with Rong Hua sent along to keep watch on Chu Guihong’s behalf. Shang Guanhe disguises himself as Li Shiliu for the occasion, though Chu Guihong isn’t fooled for a second.
Song Yimeng makes a wish, and when Nan Heng asks what it was, she rattles off a long, ridiculous list of impossibly high standards for a partner, leaving him genuinely baffled. In an unexpected moment of vulnerability, he tells her he’ll grant that wish himself, if she gives him the blade forging method.
She calls him out for empty bragging, but he doubles down anyway, and asks whether she’d trust him. Something shifts here. She doesn’t answer directly, but she softens, looking at him differently than before. What he actually wants, more than anything, is simply to not always be seen as the villain.
The Plan Falls Apart
Fireworks go off and the plan continues, until it doesn’t. Chu Guihong ends up chasing the fake Li Shiliu toward the dining area, and Nan Heng, in the chaos, takes the impostor hostage. Song Yimeng panics and begs him not to hurt “Li Shiliu,” which is itself a telling moment, real concern for someone she believes is a completely different person.
She grabs the fake Li Shiliu and runs, and the shift in the score signals that Nan Heng has clocked something too: she genuinely cares about this persona.
The Fire; Lantern Festival Rescue Scene
Nan Heng tries to work out who’s actually behind the growing fire and who benefits from it, since in the original script, the lantern archway collapses and injures a crowd of people. Song Yimeng scrambles to stop it before it happens. Li Shiliu arrives to save the day in a genuinely cool, dramatic rescue, with plenty of lingering stares afterward.
A Dream Within a Dream Fate Conversation
Song Yimeng asks Nan Heng whether he believes in fate, telling him she feels like whatever’s set in stone will always end the same way no matter what anyone does. He disagrees outright, using the image of a mountain never being made with only peaks, arguing that things can genuinely be changed. It’s a real turning point for her.
She realizes that while she knew this Lantern Night would happen, the actual outcome has already shifted from what she remembers, and traces that shift back to the moment he first saved her at Vicious Moonlight. For the first time, she starts to believe destiny really can be rewritten.
Real Feelings Start
She helps tend to his burns afterward, and this is where Nan Heng’s real feelings for her are beginning and we see Nan Heng falls in love first. Such a great moment when he recalls every moment she’s cared for or protected him along the way.
On a rooftop afterward, he asks her what makes someone a lead. She says no one particularly good does. He asks what he is, then, and she tells him he’s support, neither important nor charming. So why did she help him? Her answer: he helped her, so he matters to her. Simple as that.
Fireworks start up again, and Nan Heng is fully falling now, watching her in soft light with a ballad playing underneath. And something shifts in her too, she suddenly notices this “support character” is actually rather handsome. She might be falling as well.
The Second Fire
Nan Rui, drunk, sets off fireworks that spark a second, far more dangerous fire, this time an explosion at an oil mill that spreads flames everywhere. Li Shiliu runs straight into a burning house to save some children trapped inside, and it triggers a flash of memory for him, back nineteen years to the fire and the cupboard he was locked in as punishment. He’s left uncertain, was it just him back then, or were there children with him too.
The Moth
Worth a small mention on its own: a moth sets off part of the chaos, eventually landing on Nan Rui’s nose, a strange little visual beat threaded through the fire sequence.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 10 Recap: My Thoughts
This is the episode where the show stops teasing the romance and actually commits to it, and it earns the shift. The wish scene on the boat and the rooftop “what am I to you” conversation are genuinely the strongest emotional beats so far, quiet, vulnerable, and well-earned rather than forced.
The fate conversation is a smart bit of writing too, it gives Song Yimeng’s arc real thematic weight beyond just “surviving the script.” I do think Nan Heng is clearly falling first here, but I don’t think Song Yimeng is far behind, she just has some kinder truths about who he really is left to learn before she can fully let her guard down, and with the script still actively working against them, that’s not going to be simple.
A quarter of the way through, how are we all feeling about A Dream Within a Dream OST? Can’t say I’m a big fan of the title track.
