A Dream Within a Dream: Episodes 20-22 Recap

This is a real turning point for the second-lead romance and set the main plot on a collision course with it. Song Yimeng’s spy schemes start getting annoying, but the custom cloak reveal for Shang Guanhe redeems the whole stretch on its own, one of the most quietly devastating moments the show has done.
That’s quickly followed by the real, unambiguous Nan Heng and Li Shiliu kiss, only for the show to layer comedy over it again right after, which continues to be a frustrating habit. By the end of this run, all the crossed wires finally detonate, and Nan Heng choosing to be caught as himself rather than expose Shang Guanhe’s identity is one of the more selfless things he’s done all series, even though it costs him more ground with Song Yimeng.

The Three-Day Deal
In exchange for returning the stolen blade, Song Yiting demands “Li Shiliu” spend three full days with her, enough time to prove whether they’d actually work as a couple. Shang Guanhe reluctantly agrees.
Operation Save Yiting
Song Yimeng launches her own scheme to protect her sister. She professes to Noble Consort Gao that she’s fallen genuinely lovesick for Nan Heng, even faking coughing up blood, and begs to be allowed to personally care for him. Nan Heng sees straight through the act but lets her stay anyway, half amused by how ridiculous her performance is. When she grabs his hand and kisses it in gratitude, he’s fully smitten despite knowing it’s all theatre.
Her actual goal is digging up whatever plan he has for wooing her sister. She searches his study and gets caught empty-handed. Then she triggers a hidden drawer in his bedroom, gets caught again, and never even notices the box inside, the one holding the rabbit mask she made him, still clearly precious to him.
She even tries dosing him with a libido-reducing concoction from the pharmacy, an over-the-top scene involving a giant bowl of medicine he refuses to drink. He’s suspicious of her sudden insistence, especially once she offers to sit on his lap to convince him.
Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting’s Three Days
Day one is a casino trip, meant to scare her off, except Song Yiting wins every game against a rigged house, shocking everyone involved. Day two goes the opposite direction, Shang Guanhe humiliates her in a clothing store, and she calls the whole arrangement off, ready to skip day three entirely.
Well all was good until we get to the Shang Guanhe custom cloak scene. He finds out she’d secretly commissioned a custom cloak and a set of masks designed specifically to cover his facial scarring, ordered half a month earlier. The shopkeeper confirms she’d never shown that level of care for anyone else before, and it visibly guts him.
Later the brothers ask Shang Guanhe whether if he would have fallen for her under different circumstances but he deflects, arguing she’s drawn to a false version of him, and that someone in his position could never really marry anyway. His friends, only half joking, wonder if they should all just become monks instead.
A Dream Within a Dream Recap: Episode 21
Shang Guanhe’s Feelings Come into Focus
Heartbroken and torn up, Song Yiting tears apart every painting she’s sent to “Li Shiliu,” only for her mother to find and burn the remnants, furious. After talking things through with Nan Heng, Shang Guanhe starts unravelling too. But he tries to get Nan Rui to woo her again by coaching him on all the right things to say to her. But she catches on that someone had fed Nan Rui those lines.
Between mean-girl drama at a tea gathering and a rooftop rescue from the fake Li Shiliu, the whole situation only gets messier, and Nan Rui begins to suspect something’s off about Shang Guanhe, tipping Chu Guihong off in the process.
Cornered and desperate, Song Yiting demands a hostage exchange, the stolen blade for her paintings, forcing Nan Heng to push Shang Guanhe to finally deal with it directly.
We also get their real backstory here: Shang Guanhe was once betrayed by a friend and sentenced to execution, and Nan Heng saved him, faking his death to give him a new life. In a genuinely tender scene, Shang Guanhe finally admits to Nan Heng that he’s in love, but feels he has nothing to offer a noblewoman, no name, no status, nothing he could bring her into. Nan Heng, encourages him to just tell her the truth.

A Dream Within a Dream Misunderstanding Plot
Convinced Nan Heng is targeting her sister, Song Yimeng goes to Li Shiliu for help, insisting this isn’t a misunderstanding. As they continue to talk, they go back to the topic of Li Shiliu not understanding what geos on between a man and a woman as he is only interested in men.
To clear the air once and for all, he kisses her through his mask to prove, somewhat cheekily, that he isn’t uninterested in women. Shocked, he then covers her eyes, removes the mask for their first real, unguarded kiss. It’s a genuinely great moment, undercut once again by an unnecessary comedic beat right after.
Exposure Looms
Nan Rui tells Chu Guihong he’s figured out Li Shiliu’s true identity, a death row escapee named Shang Guan Bai he, and Chu Guihong heads to Vicious Moonlight to confront him, only for the real Nan Heng to step out instead.
Sisters at an Impasse
Song Yimeng begs Song Yiting to stay away from the man she is in love with because she thinks Song Yiting is in love with Nan Heng. She warns her that he’s secretive and dangerous, but Song Yiting isn’t backing down, she trusts her own read on him more than she trusts the rumours swirling around the capital.
When Song Yimeng pushes further, essentially saying she can like anyone except him, Song Yiting rightly calls out the double standard, asking whether the real issue is simply that he isn’t the Crown Prince. It ends with Song Yimeng’s most desperate warning yet, insisting this relationship will get her sister killed, right as Nan Rui runs off to report what he’s seen to Chu Guihong.

The Reveal
Meeting Li Shiliu to trade back the blade for her paintings, Song Yiting drugs him. She is hoping to force her mother’s hand against marrying her off to the prince, she tries to consummate a relationship with Li Shiliu, not knowing that t’s Nan Heng in this case.
She pulls off his mask and discovers it’s Nan Heng underneath, not Shang Guanhe. Song Yimeng and Chu Guihong arrive right after. Rather than expose his Li Shiliu identity, Nan Heng knocks Song Yiting out and lets himself be found there instead, choosing to be misunderstood as Nan Heng rather than blow his cover.
It plays out eerily close to the original script, and yet completely differently underneath it. Song Yimeng is furious. Chu Gui Hong is still fighting for her hand regardless. Nan Heng shuts that down flat.
Damage Control
Nan Heng scrambles to cover the scandal with a fabricated bandit story. He posts guards around the Song residence, which the family experiences less as protection and more as house arrest. Song Yimeng, already convinced by how closely it matched the original script, refuses to hear anything he says.
It admittedly makes sense given what she knows, but is genuinely maddening to watch play out episode after episode. The stakes underneath all of it are real too. In the original script, Nan Heng eventually wipes out the entire Song family to get the blade forging method. That’s exactly why she’s making such desperate, panicked choices. Some fates in that story don’t budge easily.
The next day, Song Yiting wakes up and asks only for Nan Heng. He finally gives her the truth. The real Li Shiliu she fell for is Shang Guanhe, currently imprisoned. The guards were never about control, they were to protect his Li Shiliu secret. They strike a deal: Shang Guanhe’s safety in exchange for Nan Heng withdrawing his troops, apologizing to her, and agreeing never to marry anyone but her sister.
Shang Guanhe Under Interrogation
Arrested as a death row escapee, Shang Guanhe is grilled by Chu Guihong. He’s questioned on whether Nan Heng saved him, whether he and Li Shiliu work for Nan Heng, and whether Vicious Moonlight’s real purpose is seizing the throne. He lies through all of it, pinning the operation on Nan Rui instead. He’s banking on the fact that convicting a prince requires a personal confession to the Emperor, which buys him room to claim torture if pushed.
Chu Guihong, in turn, drags Nan Heng straight to the Capital Prefecture prison. He points out that official records list Shang Guanhe as executed, and a conveniently timed fire happens to have destroyed the archives that could prove otherwise.
A fake rescue attempt at Vicious Moonlight nearly fools Nan Heng into thinking it’s really his people. He realizes it’s a setup, bandits hired by a mysterious “small beggar,” unconnected to the Waning River Crescent Guild at all.
Chu Guihong refuses to believe it, accusing Nan Heng of orchestrating the whole thing. He vows to fabricate evidence if that’s what it takes to bring down both Vicious Moonlight and Nan Heng himself, openly admitting he learned the tactic from watching Nan Heng operate.
A Dream Within a Dream Episodes 20-22 Recap: My Thoughts
These three episodes mark a real turning point for the second-lead romance while setting the main plot on a collision course with it. Episode 20’s plot of finding something to incriminate Nan Heng by Song Yimeng was genuinely irritating with all her demure and cute act.
Finding out Song Yiting quietly ordered Shang Guanhe a cloak designed around how he fights, weeks before he ever opened up to her, hit hard. A small, specific act of care that said more than any grand declaration could. Shang Guanhe’s conversation with Nan Heng about not having anything to offer Song Yiting is a real gut-punch too, especially knowing how much he’s already sacrificed once before.
Episode 21 gave me the moment I’d been waiting for, Nan Heng finally kissing her for real, unmasked, no more games, right up until the show undercut it with a comedic beat straight after which completely spoilt the mood!
By episode 22, all the crossed wires finally detonate. Watching Nan Heng choose to protect Shang Guanhe’s identity at the cost of his own reputation, and getting nothing but fury from Song Yimeng in return, genuinely stung. I wanted her to pause and wonder why rather than assume the worst.
Chu Guihong’s character is now truly committed to bring Nan Heng down. His viciousness is escalating and the villain is coming forth. He’s doing a good job of emanating that hatred.
And while this did start off as a Chinese costume drama comedy, it is tapering off in the second half of the series.
