TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Song Yimeng’s hunt for a fake blade leads her into a trap at Vicious Moonlight, headquarters of the Waning River Crescent Guild/Night Wanderers, where she meets their masked leader Li Shiliu, who is secretly Nan Heng in disguise.
After he’s forced to keep saving her from his own men’s assassination attempts, and by episode’s end she’s earned the nickname “Sister-in-law” with the Waning River Crescent Guild brothers mistakenly thinking itโs because their leader is in love with her.
Song Yimeng’s Desperate Hunt
Still no closer to the blade forging method, and with only two days left on Nan Heng’s deadline, she starts leaning toward just getting a fake blade instead. While wandering the streets she hears about a black market operating out of a place called Vicious Moonlight, information that, unbeknownst to her, was planted by Nan Heng specifically to lure her there.
She takes the bait completely. Once inside, she ends up gambling and winning, though it’s all rigged behind the scenes by the Waning River Crescent Guild, and there’s a genuinely fun bit of dice shuffling choreography in this sequence.

Vicious Moonlight Night Wanderers
The Night Wanderers or better known as Waning River Crescent Guild operates like its own independent world of martial artists and elite fighters, wanderers and bandits who were all essentially rescued from ruin by their leader. The core cast here is the mysterious masked leader, Li Shiliu, also known as Li Sixteen.
Li Shiliu’s identity doesn’t stay a secret for long. A Dream Within a Dream masked leader reveal turns out to be Nan Heng himself. This Waning River Crescent Guild plot is going to be exciting!
He built this entire underground brotherhood as a refuge after a brutal childhood defined by isolation and betrayal from his own royal family. Second in command is Shang Guanhe, who is extremely good looking. Third is Po Yunlong, and fourth is Duan Shanhu.
Their headquarters, Vicious Moonlight, is stunning, only reachable by boat, lavish, mountain backed, with a dark, almost modern architectural feel that’s unlike anything else in the show so far. Li Shiliu’s whole look here, the hat, the mask, the belt, the arm armour, is genuinely striking. Li Shiliu in the meantime, has formally tasked Shang Guanhe with killing Song Yimeng.
Elsewhere, Chu Guihong and his deputy Rong Hua sneak into Vicious Moonlight to check out its security, only to get caught by Li Shiliu. The whole confrontation is scored with a rock anthem that fits perfectly, capped by a genuinely great rooftop shot of Li Shiliu leaping off with the moon behind him. This is their first meeting, and it turns into a full fight. Part of the reason for Li Shiliuโs attack was to test Chu Guihongโs blade and its strength.

The Dancer and the Chaos That Follows
While she’s there, Song Yimeng witnesses a human auction. With the borders closed and the Qianyu army confined to the capital, a dancer from another region becomes a hot commodity, bought by a lecherous buyer.
She can’t stand by and watch, so she grabs the dancer and runs, straight into Chu Guihong and Li Shiliu, with the furious buyer chasing them down. Total chaos erupts.
The Waning River Crescent Guild brothers are watching from the sidelines, waiting for a clean shot to kill her, but there are too many witnesses, Chu Guihong is busy fighting Li Shiliu, and the buyer injures the dancer in the scuffle.
Right as Song Yimeng is about to be killed, the typing sound kicks in and Li Shiliu swoops in to save her. Not once, but twice! There’s a genuinely funny beat right after, where he clearly hopes someone else can handle her from here, but ends up having to buy time by asking the buyer to wait a little longer so he can escape, leaving the brothers completely baffled by their boss’s behaviour.

She Goes Looking for Her Hero
Song Yimeng sets out to find and thank Li Shiliu, sending him into a mild panic. She spots that he’s injured and insists on dragging him to a clinic. While this is happening, the brothers spot their opening.
Shang Guanhe throws the Darts of Tears at her, only for Li Shiliu to block it and take the injury himself. Confused, Shang Guanhe tries a different weapon, gets the same result, and finally puts it together that his boss simply can’t bring himself to kill her.
He confronts Li Shiliu directly and calls him out by name, the 7th Prince, revealing he’s known his true identity all along. The mask comes off. Turns out Shang Guanhe was never actually in the dark, he’s just hurt that despite their bond, Li Shiliu never told him himself.
Shang Guanhe ultimately talks him into keeping the disguise going and using the position as her saviour to get closer to her. He argues she’s too intimidated by the cold, ruthless Nan Heng to ever open up, but completely starstruck by her rescuer Li Shiliu. This gives him the perfect angle to dig into her connections to Chu Guihong.

Sister-in-Law
After the dust settles, they get Song Yimeng to sign into the official guest registry. She takes one look at their disorganised traditional record-keeping and ends up helping them tidy it up properly into her version of an excel spreadsheet. The guest registry she helps organise is apparently less of an administrative form and more of a thinly veiled matchmaking questionnaire, which the brothers seem fully aware of even if she isn’t yet.
The brothers start affectionately calling her Sister-in-Law from here on.
She’s clearly intrigued by this whole new character and can’t figure out why he was never in the script she read before. Po Yunlong tells her that the Boss doesn’t like women. And that he’d actually been hired to kill her, delivered in his signature hard, near expressionless, few-words-but-always-blunt style, which makes for a great dynamic among the brothers.
Duan Shanhu, meanwhile, floats the theory that the Boss must be in love with her, since why else would he stop them from killing her, which sends her into a small panic and she tries to bolt.
They let her go, and the brothers do their best to nudge Li Shiliu into escorting her home himself, which is very funny to watch play out. She, still convinced Nan Heng hired the Waning River Crescent Guild to kill her, now assumes he’ll come after them for failing. She tries to convince Li Shiliu they should team up against him instead, describing Nan Heng as a ruthless, cold-blooded killer.
Exasperated, Li Shiliu lists off Nan Heng’s actual military victories and bravery trying to change her mind about this negative impression she has of him. But she just keeps doubling down with increasingly ridiculous theories, until he finally just gives up trying to correct her.

A Dream Within a Dream Episode 6 Recap: My Thoughts
Big episode. The Li Shiliu reveal is a genuine “wait, WHAT” moment, well earned. Vicious Moonlight as a location is stunning, unlike anything else shown so far, and Li Shiliu’s whole look, mask, hat, armour, is a costume highlight. Also loving that rock anthem! Po Yunlong stood out as a favourite side character too, saying almost nothing but landing every line he does get. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, especially the brothers’ collective confusion at their boss’s behaviour, and the “escort her home” bit near the end.
