A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 4 Recap

Chu Guihong escapes prison to rescue Song Yimeng, and Nan Heng reveals it was a trap all along, forcing a forest showdown where the script repeatedly overrides his murderous intentions to save her instead. Back at his residence, a string of failed attempts on her life (poison, throwing stars, drowning) all backfire onto Nan Heng poison comedy, ending with a second underwater kiss and him thoroughly, comically defeated.
Imperial Prison
Nan Rui pays Chu Guihong a visit, and there’s a stretch of comedy here that honestly feels unnecessary, though it’s probably meant to reinforce just how much of a fool the prince is meant to be.
Chu Guihong is stuck on something that never sat right with him at the battle of Pingrong. Ten days before the fighting started, people from neighbouring cities suddenly showed up, and General Fang followed right behind, threatening to massacre the people of Xing and Ji if the gates weren’t opened.
The timing bothers him. How did the Heyuan army know exactly when to strike, know their every move, capture two other cities in the process? It smells like a leak, and Chu Guihong starts suspecting Nan Heng colluded with the enemy, a betrayal that cost 20,000 Qianyu soldiers and Prince Qianyu his life.
Then, to make things worse, he overhears the prison guards gossiping about Nan Heng pursuing Song Yimeng, which sends him over the edge.
Chu Guihong Prison Escape
He escapes the prison, though it’s really Nan Heng’s guards quietly letting him go. He heads straight for Song Yimeng, since she’d tried to walk away from the script earlier, and initially suspects she isn’t really who she claims to be.
To prove herself, she brings up the embroidered brocade sachet she gave him before he left for battle, and he’s instantly convinced, revealing he’s kept it on him this whole time. Testing him further, she asks for the blade forging method, and he tells her it’s the one thing he genuinely can’t share, even with her.
A Dream Within a Dream Forest Scene
Nan Heng shows up with his troops, revealing the whole prison escape was a setup, engineered by having the guards gossip on purpose to bait Chu Guihong into an act of treason. Chu Guihong tells her to run, Nan Heng fires an arrow at her, and then the typing sound kicks in, forcing him to sprint toward her at full speed to stop the hit, and the arrow ends up in him instead. His own confusion in that moment is genuinely funny to watch.
He then tries to strangle her, only for his own hands to be pried away from her throat against his will, which only deepens his suspicion that she’s using sorcery on him.
This is also the moment Song Yimeng clocks that the script itself is shifting since she arrived, since Chu Guihong breaking out of prison was never part of the original story. He ends up with an official decree and is released properly, she’s dragged back to Nan Heng’s residence.
Male Lead Residence
Yes, it’s literally called that, which is funny every time. To force answers out of her, he ties her to a chair in the courtyard and threatens her with the weapons. As always, Liu Yuning in armour, long hair and playing the dangerous villain, makes him so attractive!
There’s a genuinely cool bit where he throws a ball at her and pulls it back on a tether, one of several small choreography flourishes like that scattered through the episode. He throws three throwing stars at her next, only for the typing sound to override him again, forcing him to block the throw himself and hurt his own back in the process.
With weapons clearly not working, he pivots to poison, not a lethal dose, just enough to make a point, and they sit down to a meal entirely laced with it (blue chicken feet included, which is its own kind of visual and ridiculous). He tries to force feed her poisoned vegetables, only for the script to redirect it straight into his own mouth instead, leaving him with comically swollen purple lips.
Out of options, he locks himself in chains so he physically can’t intervene, and has his deputy push her into the lake to drown instead. Even chained, he’s visibly fighting the compulsion to save her, and eventually breaks free by force and dives in anyway.
Underwater, he gives her a second kiss, this time to get air into her lungs, shot beautifully with a ballad playing over the whole sequence. She opens her eyes, shoves him away, and it turns straight back into a fight.
With every method failing, they finally just throw her out of the residence. And he’s left completely wrecked over it, which is very funny to watch.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 4 Recap: My Thoughts
Mixed bag. The Nan Rui and Chu Guihong prison scene felt like unnecessary padding, but everything with Nan Heng trying (and failing) to kill her is comedy gold, the ball and tether trick, the flying stars backfiring, the poisoned chicken feet, the swollen lips. He also just looks incredible in full armour with his hair down. By the end, watching him get thoroughly defeated by his own body is hilairous, he’s a broken man.
By the end of this episode 3 recap, I have to say I’m enjoying Li Yitong as Song Yimeng. She’s doing a good job at the comedic level mixed with confusion and fear all at the same time.
