A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 9 Recap

Nan Heng discovers Minister Gao was behind the mine explosion, then gets both Song Yimeng and Chu Guihong to lay out their separate plans to assassinate him, using the information to stay one step ahead. All three plans converge on the Lantern Festival, but Nan Heng quietly sabotages the actual assassination attempt while letting the cover story hold, all while trying to dispel Chu Guihong’s growing suspicion that Li Shiliu and Nan Heng are somehow connected.
Nan Heng’s Discovery
Nan Heng finds out that Minister Gao acted behind his back and was actually responsible for the mine explosion. He’s furious, and if this had been his uncle’s doing directly, he says he’d have already dealt with him personally. To get ahead of the threat against him, he has word sent to Song Yimeng asking her to write out her full plan for killing him and present it to Li Shiliu.
She shows up at Vicious Moonlight with her plan, written out on an enormous scroll, and Chu Guihong comes along with her. The visual of Li Shiliu descending the stairs as Chu Guihong walks toward him, shot in slow motion specifically to build tension between the two, is genuinely striking, and it works. The two men immediately start posturing at each other.
The Kill Nan Heng Project
Song Yimeng unrolls what has to be the longest scroll in the show so far, labelled, only half-jokingly, the Kill Nan Heng Project, with a perfectly matched dramatic score underneath it. From here, all three of them, Song Yimeng, Chu Guihong, and Nan Heng himself in disguise, take turns pitching their own version of the plan.
Song Yimeng’s plan involves luring Nan Heng out to the docks during the Lantern Festival under the pretense of having information on the blade forging method, putting on enough of a performance that he’s visibly drawn in and aroused, genuinely great acting from Nan Heng in this beat, before finishing him off with a hidden dart concealed in her hairpin.
Chu Guihong’s plan is blunter. He sees Nan Heng as an arrogant tyrant, and his version has Fu Gui clearing a path during the festival so he can confront Nan Heng directly with an enhanced Crescent Blade and kill him outright, banking on Nan Heng being too cowardly to fight back.
Both plans clearly get under Nan Heng’s skin, less because of the danger and more because he can’t stand how both of them genuinely see him. His own version, presented as Li Shiliu’s plan, is the most tactical of the three.
Position the Qianyu Army on city patrol duty and the Xuanjia Army guarding the palace, thinning out Nan Heng’s actual protection, then have Song Yimeng lure him onto a decorated boat on Jade River, get him drunk, and let Li Shiliu finish the job while Chu Guihong handles the cleanup afterward. This sequence is another visually strong one.
A Dream Within a Dream Lantern Festival Plan
As night falls, Nan Rui hosts a banquet while Chu Guihong has his army patrolling the streets. Nan Heng, visibly on edge, asks Fu Gui for the time and is told it’s the Xu Hour, which, if you’re not familiar with how ancient China actually named its hours, is worth reading our full breakdown on how they named their hours.
They go with plan 3. Song Yimeng ends up accidentally causing a scene with a group of noble girls, and while trying to make amends for ruining one of their dresses, the girl grabs her hairpin, the very same one hiding the assassination dart, and it accidentally goes off, striking Nan Rui’s glass and getting Song Yimeng accused of being an assassin on the spot.
Nan Heng steps in to save her, and this is where his full main character energy kicks in, genuinely one of Liu Yuning ‘s best moments in the episode. He shuts down Nan Rui’s overreaction, telling him he’s making a scene at a royal event and needs more dignity, then leads Song Yimeng away, conveniently keeping the actual plan alive in the process.
As they walk, she’s quietly trying to steer him toward the river, while he’s simultaneously thinking about how to nudge her into leading him there himself, both of them working the same angle without realizing it.
In the end, Nan Heng doesn’t let the assassination attempt actually succeed, but he lets it play out just enough to ease Chu Guihong’s suspicion that Li Shiliu and Nan Heng might somehow be connected.
The Blade Forging Attempt
Nan Heng keeps trying to reverse-engineer the stolen blade to uncover its secret, but it doesn’t work, the metal is too brittle to hold up.
Song Residence
Madam Song fakes an illness, claiming she’s sick with worry over her daughter Song Yiting still being unmarried, all in an effort to push her toward Nan Rui, who’s been courting her, encouraging her to see him during the Lantern Festival. Song Yiting isn’t interested, pointing out plainly that men from noble families all keep concubines, and that’s not a life she wants any part of. She wants to find her true soulmate instead.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 9 Recap: My Thoughts
The three-way pitch meeting for how to kill Nan Heng is genuinely one of the funniest structural choices the show has made so far, turning an assassination plot into something that plays almost like a heist-movie planning scene, complete with its own dramatic scroll reveal.
Nan Heng’s frustration at being universally seen as a villain by both Song Yimeng and Chu Guihong adds real texture underneath the comedy, and the Lantern Festival sequence does a great job of letting two competing schemes run in parallel without the audience losing track of either.
The Song Yiting subplot feels like a nice quieter beat to break up the tension, small, but a good reminder the world doesn’t only revolve around the central trio. I’m also at this point enjoying the Nan Heng and Song Yimeng chemistry.
