A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 7 Recap

Li Shiliu gets pulled deeper into a tangled web of his own making as both Song Yimeng and Chu Guihong try to recruit “him” against Nan Heng himself, for completely opposite reasons. A chaotic mix-up with two Li Shilius nearly blows everyone’s cover at once, while underneath the comedy, real history surfaces about why Nan Heng and Chu Guihong turned from close friends into enemies.
By episode’s end, both sides are bracing for the Lantern Festival, another iconic scene from the script, each convinced the other is plotting to use it against them. A Dream Within a Dream romance novel plot not working as expected.
Two Schemes, Same Target
Li Shiliu’s popularity is apparently rivalling Chu Guihong’s among the unmarried women of the capital, and even the maids gossip about how lucky Song Yimeng was to be rescued by him. It’s around here that she clocks something important: Li Shiliu isn’t a character from the script at all. He’s a genuine wildcard, someone the story never accounted for.
Nan Heng, meanwhile, is stuck in an awkward position of his own making. He can’t step in and marry Song Yimeng directly, because he still needs her to stay close to Chu Guihong to get her hands on the blade forging method. So instead, he leans harder into his Li Shiliu persona to build a connection with her that way.
Shang Guanhe, tries to help move things along and writes her a cringeworthy letter on Li Shiliu’s behalf, which lands badly. Furious, Nan Heng writes a proper one himself, and she loves it. The Waning River Crescent Guild takes it a step further, commissioning a romance novel loosely based on the two of them and circulating it around the capital to fan the flames.
Song Yimeng, for her part, is playing her own angle entirely. She’s decided the homeless people Li Shiliu has taken in over the years must all be victims of Nan Heng’s cruelty, which means Li Shiliu should logically hate him just as much as she does.
So she sets out to befriend “him” specifically to build an alliance against Nan Heng, completely unaware she’s befriending the exact same person from both directions, for two totally different reasons. Li Shi Liu and Song Yimeng strategy going awry.
Chu Guihong’s Suspicion
Chu Guihong is convinced Li Shiliu is secretly working for Nan Heng, and he wants him arrested for stealing armaments from the army. He and Nan Rui cook up a plan, luring Nan Heng to Vicious Moonlight while Rong Hua moves in to arrest Li Shiliu. Chu Guihong even disguises himself as Li Shiliu to call the bluff, with Nan Rui ready to pull off the mask and see whether Nan Heng intervenes to protect him.
This Nan Heng disguise comedy is a mess from the start. Song Yimeng shows up unexpectedly, forcing the real Nan Heng to scramble into his Li Shiliu disguise, and suddenly there are two Li Shilius in play. Chu Guihong, still in disguise, meets with her first, and her obvious familiarity with “Li Shiliu” makes him privately suspect she’s having an affair with the man.
Then the real Li Shiliu arrives, and she’s stunned to see two of him at once. Chu Guihong ducks into hiding and ends up eavesdropping on the real conversation between Song Yimeng and Nan Heng, where she tries once again to recruit him into an alliance against Nan Heng.
The Lantern Festival Threat
Song Yimeng is convinced, based on her knowledge of the original script, that Nan Heng plans to set the Lantern Festival showcase on fire and cause mass casualties, using the chaos to eliminate political enemies and win allies. She pushes Li Shiliu hard to help her stop it, appealing to his reputation for compassion.
What she doesn’t know is that Nan Heng has no such plan at all, and hearing her describe it in such specific detail privately convinces him that she and Chu Guihong are the ones plotting against him, fabricating a crisis so Chu Guihong can swoop in and look like a hero.
It doesn’t help that, only hours earlier, his uncle warned him the Emperor has been punishing palace guards, creating an opening to shift palace security duty over to Chu Guihong, who’s only ten days into his new promotion and needs one more high-profile win, like successfully running the lantern showcase, to lock in control of both the capital and the palace.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 7 Recap: My Thoughts
This episode is doing a lot of heavy lifting on the comedy of errors front, two Li Shilius, Chu Guihong quietly convincing himself his fiancรฉe is cheating on him with a man who is, unbeknownst to him, also his rival, and it works because the mechanics of the mix-up are genuinely clever rather than just chaotic for its own sake.
The reveal of the real history between Nan Heng and Chu Guihong adds welcome emotional weight underneath all the scheming, turning what could’ve just been political rivalry into something more personal and tragic.
The political manoeuvring around the Lantern Festival is also nicely layered, everyone thinks they’re the one pulling strings, and nobody actually has the full picture yet, which is a fun position for the audience to be in.
