A Dream Within a Dream Recap:ย Episode 35
A Standoff with the Scriptwriter
Song Yimeng brings the scriptwriter to Vicious Moonlight, and he’s stunned by how much richer everything is compared to what he actually wrote, places, people, whole storylines that grew organically from the characters themselves.
She makes her position clear: these people are real to her now, and if he intends to force everyone back onto the original plot, she and Nan Heng will stop him. He’s not interested in backing down, determined to finish the script as intended.
Shang Guanhe’s Adoption
Madam Song confronts Shang Guanhe at Vicious Moonlight, blaming him for ruining her daughter’s shot at a royal marriage. He admits he’d thought the same thing days earlier. But realizes what Song Yiting actually wants isn’t status, it’s someone to share an unrestrained life with, and decides he wants to marry her regardless of the cost to himself.
The scriptwriter steps in with a solution, formally adopting Shang Guanhe into the Chu family, erasing his bandit status and giving Madam Song no more grounds to object. He’s now Chu He. Song Yude stalls the Qianyu family’s dowry for six months, quietly buying time for Shang Guanhe to actually say how he feels, something he’s been holding back after learning he doesn’t technically exist in the original script at all.
Nan Heng’s Decline Explained
As Nan Heng’s illness worsens, he finally lets Shang Guanhe in on the truth about the script world, since as the newly adopted “Chu He,” he’s now positioned to help figure out the scriptwriter’s next move. It’s also revealed Shang Guanhe himself could vanish just as abruptly as he appeared, unlike Song Yiting, an original character bound to this world permanently.
And the real gut-punch: the scriptwriter confirms Nan Heng’s health is tied directly to Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting’s romance progressing, the more it blossoms, the sicker he gets.
Song Yimeng Finally Says It
Song Yiting calls out her sister for never actually fighting for love, pointing out that of the hundred steps it takes to build a relationship, Nan Heng took ninety-nine of them while she did almost nothing. It lands.
That night, Song Yimeng finally says the words out loud for the first time, tells him she loves him, and promises to start closing that distance herself, in action, not just words. Kiss follows, playful and warm, and the two consummate their marriage for the first time, written with genuine tenderness and a bit of natural, funny back-and-forth between them.
Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting’s Real Proposal
Nan Rui, still trying to win Song Yiting over, stages a public proposal at Vicious Moonlight, complete with 74 portraits, one more than her original 73 for “Li Shiliu.” With no objection form Shang Guanhe, she agrees on the spot in exasperation.
Finally, Shang Guanhe finally steps in and asks her outright what she’d do if he simply vanished one day. Her answer, that she’d mourn him and then move on rather than waste her youth waiting, is exactly what he needs to hear, and he kisses her, their second real kiss, sealing it for good.
It later comes out that Nan Rui’s proposal was staged as a favour to his uncle Prince Qianyu, leaving Song Yimeng newly suspicious of what’s really being orchestrated behind the scenes.
The Hidden Fourth Rule
The scriptwriter finally reveals what he’d left out before, a fourth rule of this world: anyone who alters an iconic scene suffers consequences for it. Given everything Nan Heng and Song Yimeng have already changed, that’s a genuinely ominous note to end on.

A Dream Within a Dream Recap:ย Episode 36
The Scriptwriter’s Ultimatum
The scriptwriter pushes for the plot to fall back in line, threatening either Song Yimeng’s suffering or simply waiting Nan Heng out until he dies, now that the Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting marriage is locked in.
Chu Guihong, quietly on the scriptwriter’s side, is prepared to support whatever gets Nan Heng out of the picture. Shang Guanhe tries to get closer to the scriptwriter, expressing genuine gratitude and probing gently for hints about what’s coming next, but gets nothing beyond a warning not to ask questions.
Chu Guihong, meanwhile, learns the truth directly from the scriptwriter himself, resentful at being cast as the perpetual “second male lead” doomed to suffer, and is promised the role of male lead once the scriptwriter returns to the modern world. It’s a genuinely dark turn, Chu Guihong no longer just wants Nan Heng dead, he wants the throne for himself now too.
Nan Rui’s Quiet Growth
Song Yiting asks Nan Rui why he helped Shang Guanhe, and his answer, equal parts loyalty to his uncle and real care for her, paints him as one of the more likeable characters in this back stretch, self-deprecating but genuinely kind. They agree to be friends. It’s a small, warm moment before everything falls apart.
The Emperor Poisoned
In a devastating turn, the Emperor is poisoned through a gift of Dongting oranges, engineered by Chu Guihong. Nan Rui, caught in the fallout, watches Chu Guihong kill Ji Xiang, practically the only family he had left, and narrowly escapes arrest himself thanks to Fu Gui’s intervention.
With the Emperor dying and the court demanding answers, Nan Heng stands firmly behind Nan Rui’s innocence, refusing to let him be convicted without real evidence.
Grief and Resolve
Nan Heng delivers the crushing news, Ji Xiang didn’t survive, and the Emperor won’t make it through the night. Nan Rui spirals into guilt, having ignored every warning about trusting Chu Guihong, but Nan Heng refuses to let him wallow, telling him plainly that self-pity won’t undo anything and that he needs him focused on uncovering the truth instead.
Nan Heng’s Worsening Illness
Attacked during a confrontation with the scriptwriter, Nan Heng collapses and is rushed back to the palace, lying to Song Yimeng about the cause, an “antidote-curable poison” rather than the real, deeper sickness tied to Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting’s romance.
She makes him promise never to lie to her again, a promise that, once again, won’t hold. There’s a genuinely sweet, small moment amid all this, him teasing her about the awkwardly tiny medicine bowl she’s feeding him from.

Bracing for the Next Iconic Scene
Realizing the “troop transfer” moment from the script, one that originally happens after Nan Heng takes the throne, appears to be unfolding again, Song Yimeng scrambles to keep Song Yiting away from the city gates and briefs Shang Guanhe on exactly what’s coming so they can prepare.
Meanwhile, an unexplained “glitch” occurs for the second time, hinting the story’s fabric itself might be straining under the weight of everything being rewritten.
A Dream Within a Dream Recap:ย Episode 37
Confronting the Scriptwriter
Song Yimeng accuses the scriptwriter of orchestrating both Nan Heng’s illness and the Emperor’s poisoning. He’s chillingly casual about it, comparing his characters to crops, easily modified or deleted, and lays out the real stakes of the fourth rule: keep deviating from the plot and Nan Heng dies, or complete the remaining iconic scenes and return to reality with him alive.
Song Yiting Taken Hostage
While Song Yiting is meant to be safely secured away from the city gate, Rong Hua seizes her and her mother, cutting off one of her fingers as proof of intent. The scriptwriter uses this as leverage, forcing Song Yimeng toward the “Choice Between Two” scene at the city tower, promising safe return if she complies.
Song Yiting begs her sister to fight rather than surrender, but Song Yimeng, desperate to protect her, agrees to be bound and cooperate.
The Emperor’s Deathbed
Dying and finally at peace with his estranged son, the Emperor asks Nan Heng to call him “Father” for the first time in a long time. It’s a devastating, hard-won moment, made heavier by Nan Heng’s memory of a childhood gift once dismissed outright.
He manages the word through visible pain, coughing up blood from the emotional and physical strain. Chu Guihong arrives soon after, openly declaring he intends to seize the throne, confident in his army’s overwhelming numbers, 5,000 against Nan Heng’s mere 300.
The Rescue Attempt
Learning Song Yimeng went to the city tower under duress, Nan Heng rushes there with what troops he has, despite Shang Guanhe’s warning that Qianyu forces vastly outnumber them and reinforcements are still days out. He orders the Waning River Crescent Guild to stall the approaching army for as long as they can and heads to the tower himself anyway, certain he’s the real target.
The City Tower
At the tower, Chu Li holds a knife to Song Yiting’s throat, forcing Nan Heng into the “Choice Between Two” scene using both the Emperor’s antidote and false poisoning evidence against Nan Rui as leverage.
Song Yimeng begs Nan Heng not to shoot, offering herself instead. The scriptwriter pushes her to go through with the ritual, tying herself up for the coming iconic scene, insisting it’s the only way home. She warns him one last time that even if she complies, the other characters are no longer his to control.
The Battle
What follows is the emotional and narrative peak of the series so far. Nan Heng throws his spear at Chu Li, and Song Yimeng jumps. Rong Hua kills Chu Li and immediately frames Nan Heng for both the Emperor’s poisoning and Prince Qianyu’s death.
Shang Guanhe tries to save Song Yiting but, overwhelmed, ends up throwing her from the gate, and she dies. The battle turns catastrophic, Nan Heng, badly outnumbered, is ultimately killed by Rong Hua, and Song Yimeng, fighting to the end, dies alongside him.

A Dream Within a Dream Episodes 35-37 Recap: My Thoughts
Episode 35 gave me one of the happiest, most relieved viewing experiences of the whole show, and I wasn’t ready for how much it would mean to me. Song Yimeng finally saying “I love you” out loud, taking her own steps toward him after ninety-nine steps of him carrying the whole relationship, felt like such a satisfying resolution to something that had been dragging for episodes.
And the Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting proposal, especially her answer about mourning him and then living her life anyway, felt so mature and real for a second-lead romance. I was fully happy for about one episode’s worth of time.
Then episode 36 started quietly pulling that happiness apart, and I could feel the dread creeping back in even before anything overtly bad happened. Learning Nan Heng’s illness is directly tied to Shang Guanhe and Song Yiting’s romance progressing gutted me. It turns their happy ending into a countdown clock for someone else’s life, which is such a cruel structural choice.
And the Emperor’s poisoning followed by Ji Xiang’s death was so sad! I’d genuinely grown fond of that quiet, understated loyalty between him and Nan Rui, and losing him felt like the show taking away one of its few uncomplicated relationships right when everything else was falling apart.
Episode 37 absolutely destroyed me. WTH! The Emperor finally getting Nan Heng to call him “Father” on his deathbed had me in tears before the real carnage even started.
And then the city tower sequence, Song Yiting being thrown from the gate, Nan Heng and Song Yimeng both dying in the final battle, I sat there stunned. I genuinely didn’t expect the show to actually let its leads die. But with 3 episodes to go, surely we get to see something unexpected.
