A Dream Within a Dream: Episode 5 Recap

Nan Heng realizes his compulsion to save her is a dangerous weakness he can’t let anyone discover, while Chu Guihong showers Song Yimeng with devotion and a protective jade amulet. Song Yimeng, meanwhile, plots to use his weakness against him, learns the grim fate that awaits Chu Guihong in the original script, and ultimately strikes a deal with Nan Heng: she’ll find the blade forging method in exchange for being left alone.
Nan Heng Weakness Reveal
He finally puts it together. Every single time Song Yimeng is in danger, his body just stops listening to him and forces him to save her, no exceptions. He recognises this for what it is, a genuine weakness, and decides absolutely no one can find out about it.
Chu Guihong and Song Yimeng
Chu Guihong and Nan Rui run into Song Yimeng on her way back from Nan Heng’s residence, and this whole scene exists to show just how much Chu Guihong cares. It’s easy to see why audiences fall for the second lead here, he’s genuinely sweet.
He gives her the late Empress’s jade amulet, his aunt’s (late Empress), for protection, telling her that with it, not even Nan Heng can touch her. They’re still set to be married, and he calls her “my beloved.” The sachet she made him kept him company through his entire prison stint, and he promises to wear it always so the scent lingers and everyone knows exactly who he belongs to. Genuinely swoon worthy stuff, and he’s easy on the eyes while delivering it too.
The Escape Plan Gets Serious
Song Yimeng realises the one constant she can actually exploit is that Nan Heng has to save her no matter what, so she starts trying to rewrite the script around that fact. This is also where the show drops a big preview of where things are headed, straight from her memory of the original script’s episode 33.
In that version, Chu Guihong spends the whole story being targeted by Nan Heng, injured, dismissed from office, and wronged at every turn. Eventually Nan Heng seizes the throne by killing his own father the Emperor and harming his brothers along the way, all illegitimately.
Chu Guihong becomes the one trying to set things right and punish him for it, only for Nan Heng to tell him, essentially, that he’s already killed his family, taken his woman, and now intends to take his life too.
In the original story, Nan Heng is the true villain, and he kills Chu Guihong outright. With that grim future hanging over her, she’s reminded the Lantern Festival is just two days away, which sets up the next iconic scene, the rescue during the festival.
Court
This episode is where the production really shows off. The court scenes have a noticeably higher level of detail than most period dramas, richly embroidered gowns, gorgeous use of purple, and even small touches like the princes not needing to hold ceremonial tablets, while the ministers carry jade ones instead of the usual wooden blocks. A Dream Within a Dream court costume design feels a notch above the standard.
On the political side, Nan Rui pushes to have Chu Guihong reinstated as General of the Qianyu Army to guard the palace. Nan Heng objects, pointing to the scale of the loss at the Battle of Pingrong. Nan Heng had already lined up Inspector Yan Xiao from the Censorate to bring formal impeachment charges against Chu Guihong.
The plan falls apart when Yan Xiao never shows, having been kidnapped, and Song Yimengis the one who tips Chu Guihong off about the whole scheme. The Emperor, out of patience with the back and forth, appoints Chu Guihong Imperial Commander anyway and grants him the right to carry a sword inside the palace.
Song Residence
Over lunch, Chu Guihong and Minister Song discuss the Waning River Crescent Guild/Night Wanderers, an elite martial world group founded three years earlier by someone still unidentified. Minister Song flags them as a genuine danger to the palace, gathering at a place referred to here as Vicious Moonlight. The two agree they need to find out who’s really behind it to keep Chu Guihong and Nan Rui safe.
Meanwhile Nan Heng comes looking for Chu Guihong at the residence, and Song Yimeng goes to meet him instead. By now they both know he can’t kill her, so she leans into provoking him. He threatens her maids as leverage instead. She counters hard, rigging bows and arrows in the room that could kill him with one pull, then threatens to set off gunpowder strapped to herself.
Her demand is simple, let her marry Chu Guihong. He refuses outright. In the chaos, kiss number three happens, though this time it’s purely tactical, her trying to physically shut him up before he can alert Chu Guihong that he’s in the room. They eventually strike a deal, she’ll find the blade forging method within two days.
With no way to actually kill her himself, Nan Heng decides it’s finally time to bring in Waning River Crescent Guild, and let them prove their worth to him instead.
A Dream Within a Dream Episode 5 Recap: My Thoughts
This is the episode where the production values really jump out, the court scenes are a clear step up from other period dramas, gorgeous purple palette, intricate embroidery, jade tablets instead of the usual wooden ones.
Wang Youshuo as Chu Guihong is yet another great casting call. His scenes are doing a lot of the emotional heavy lifting too, properly swoon-worthy, sincere, and it’s easy to see why he’s a fan favourite. The Song Yimeng and Nan Heng standoff with the rigged bows and the gunpowder threat is a fun, tense high point.
