Affinity Episode Recap: 25

Nerves win out, even though Wu Nongyu was the one who asked for this. Mid-kiss, she grazes his wound by accident and jerks back in a panic. He doesn’t miss a beat, just guides her hand to his waist to steady her.

She apologizes for her inexperience, offers to “study up” so she doesn’t hurt him again. He pulls her in instead, tells her she’s doing great, that her touch just tickled a little. No pact tonight though, he decides. Long day for both of them. As they fall asleep, she resolves to love away his hatred for her brother, somehow keeping both men in her life.

Elsewhere, Lin Juan’s alone with his own crisis, injecting an inhibitor that’s stopped working like it used to. Wu Siyuan drops by to explain the obvious: bodies build tolerance. Lin Juan’s had a rough stretch looking for the third fragment. He was ambushed in Mugang and hospitalized. He asks Wu Siyuan for a new matchmaking session to create a real bond this time so that he can stop him from spiralling out of control.

Siyuan brushes him off and reminds him he already blew his shot losing to Xie Xinxu. Lin Juan asks, bitterly, if they’re even friends. Siyuan’s answer is ice cold. He doesn’t befriend Rens and even when forced to, he keeps his distance. Lin Juan storms off and makes a call.

Later he shows up at Wu Nongyuโ€™s and finds her nursing a fresh cut. She asks him to wait outside, but he follows her in and locks the door instead. He confronts her, pointing out that she and Xie Xinxu clearly havenโ€™t bonded, and questions why she used an inhibitor instead of calming him herself.

He threatens to test her blood but then stops. He backs off, admitting to himself that he doesnโ€™t have the stomach for real villainy.

Xie Xinxu arrives right as this is happening, briefly assumes the worst. Once it’s cleared up, Lin Juan pitches a deal instead, a fragment lead in exchange for a transfer to logistics, he’s done with frontline duty. She agrees. Lin Juan reaches to shake on it but Xie Xinxu beats him to the handshake.

In an underground garage, Wu Siyuan meets Director Xia, who’s unhappy the fragment hunt is dragging. She authorizes whatever methods necessary. After he leaves, a subordinate named Xiao Zhang steps up, and it’s revealed he’s been quietly reporting on Siyuan this whole time. Xia promises Zhang a promotion once Siyuan’s dealt with.

Xia reflects on her own origin story, a former pharmaceutical clerk who found the mutation research a decade ago and built her power on the back of it. If a real cure ever surfaces, the Bureau loses its whole reason to exist. She tells Zhang to be ruthless.

Back home, Nongyu texts her brother and demands Lin Juan’s transfer and a week’s loan of his time, frames it as a path to forgiveness. Siyuan agrees. He is however terrified for her safety and begs her to stop chasing fragments.

Meanwhile, Xie Xinxu confesses something to Mr. Ding, that he’d deliberately let Nongyu see the abuse footage, thinking he could control her reaction. Losing contact with her briefly proved how wrong he was, and how much he actually cares. Watching her overcompensate for her brother’s sins makes him feel too guilty to move forward with the pact.

Mr. Ding compares his revenge path to a train on a cliffside, tells him if he can’t stop it, at least make the ride bearable for the people on board with him. Taking that to heart, Xie Xinxu joins Nongyu and Lin Juan for the trip to Mugang, a rough desert border zone. Scarves get handed out for cover. He wraps hers himself, sweetly enough that Lin Juan visibly sulks about it.

They land at a boxing gym mid-match. Lin Juan’s clearly been here before, confirms the fragment’s the actual prize this time. He’s already beaten nine challengers here in the past, and someone in the crowd calls out to congratulate him as they arrive. We’ve officially entered the desert arc. At this rate I wouldn’t be shocked if this show ends up in space.

Affinity Episode Recap: 26

Challenger number nine falls, and Lin Juan’s reward is a manhole cover dressed up as a medal, not the fragment. Ask about the real prize and the answer’s blunt: it’ll cost you your life. Planning their next move, he suggests the same approach again. Xie Xinxu shuts that down flat. They need a new angle, not another setup.

Focus shifts to Lu Ziye, the gym owner known for his morning soup ritual after all-nighters. They corner him at the restaurant. Xie Xinxu clocks something wrong right away, the water tastes off, he has the sense of being watched, then spots a wanted poster with his own face on the wall. He tells the others to run while he handles it.

Outside, Secretary Zhang intercepts Nongyu and claims Siyuan sent him after tracking a danger alert. She trusts her, tells Lin Juan to go back for Xie Xinxu, and gets in the car with Zhang instead. Big mistake. She tosses her phone and watch out the window, reveals she can’t let her or her brother dismantle the Bureau and plans to leave her for the escaped Ren roaming Mugang to finish off.

Meanwhile Xie Xinxu runs into Xia Yuyan, who drops a bomb, Director Xia is her mother, and Mugang is under her direct control. The gym owner, her own husband, gets dismissed as nothing more than “blood supply.”

Xia Yuyan admits the wanted poster was just her excuse to see him again, her obsession fully intact despite zero reciprocation, and confirms the third fragment lead was a trap meant to wipe out Siyuan and everyone tied to him. Then, gleefully, she tells him Zhang’s already got Nongyu. I didnโ€™t see that coming!

Zhang’s plan hits a snag though, since robbers hijack her car looking for inhibitors and Yin, and in the chaos, Nongyu gets grabbed and moved to another vehicle, her tracking watch ending up back on her wrist somewhere in the scuffle.

Elsewhere, Siyuan’s cooking Li Xiang a birthday meal when her watch buzzes with his sister’s SOS so they drop everything to find her. The robbers eventually just dump Nongyu somewhere remote, and as night falls, a pack of female Ren catch her scent and close in. Siyuan arrives just in time, fires a warning shot, then deliberately cuts his own finger to bait them off his sister and onto himself.

Li Xiang and her team storm in for backup, and in the middle of the firefight, she uses the manhole cover Lin Juan won as a launch platform. Siyuan shoots the cover to send her flying straight into the enemy line, cutting several down in one clean sweep. Genuinely loved her swooping in to save Siyuan from a horde of feral women, though the whole flying silhouetted against the moon bit is so OTT.

Then the sky opens up, and a dragon descends with Xie Xinxu. Everyone regroups to fight off what’s left of the horde, and Nongyu watches, in tears, as her brother and friends fight to bring her home. The people of Mugang have birds as their mutated creature companions to help fight but no one can beat the mighty dragon.

Affinity Episode Recap 25-26: My Thoughts

The near-pact scene opening episode 25 is genuinely sweet, real vulnerability instead of just heat, and it makes for a nice contrast against Lin Juan’s storyline, which does real work humanizing someone who could’ve easily stayed a jealous rival archetype.

Director Xia’s reveal gives the Bureau’s cruelty an actual motive beyond generic villainy, self-preservation dressed up as public safety, and that’s a satisfying bit of information.

The Mugang arc itself is where the show fully embraces its own absurdity though, a boxing gym, a desert ambush, a flying manhole cover, and the re-appearance of the dragon, all stitched together with genuine stakes and real fear for Nongyu’s safety underneath it.

I was surprised to see Xia Yuyan make a resurgence in the storyline. Double points for the surprise and love this re-introduction of a character we all hated.
