TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Xie Xinxu comes clean about the whole obsessive plan, he manufactured “Gu Yanqing” to be her exact dream man after overhearing her describe one, and he’s now dangerously close to losing control. A crane bridge escape goes hilariously wrong, an octopus enters the plot (yes, really), and their first two kisses happen mid-crisis, one to defeat a giant mutant octopus, one because Xie Xinxu is losing his grip entirely.
Affinity Episode Recap: 5
Xie Xinxu confesses that she’s the only person who’s ever made him feel alive. Before her, his world was a silent, meaningless wasteland. He wanted to destroy it. To cope with the boredom, he started playing a “game,” pretending to be a normal, helpful person in society. The game got old fast and he failed at being a normal person.
Then he met her. He calls it a mental explosion and the feeling never faded. Obsessed with possessing her, he staged their meeting in the rain. She was terrified and ran straight into her brother’s arms.
Her brother teased her about it, then asked what her ideal man would be like. She listed it out: tall, handsome, an orphan (no family drama), someone who’d treat her career like his own. She jokingly added difficult, bad-tempered, “toxic.”Xie Xinxu was listening. He suppressed his real nature and built the entire “Gu Yanqing” persona around her wish list, then personally recruited her into the institute.
Back in the present, his composure is cracking. Suppressing the urge to possess her has been the hardest part of the plan. Also, the “inhibitors” he gave her earlier? Fake. Just supplements, for a false sense of security.
He’s losing it now. He warns her a Ren losing control could kill everyone in the building and he begs her to form a pact with him. The man is genuinely mesmerizing when he’s spiralling, that heavy breathing sells it completely.
She flees but then comes back with a real inhibitor. Too shaken to inject him herself, she lets him guide her trembling hand to do it. Once it kicks in, he pulls her into an embrace, tells her even the drug doesn’t comfort him like her scent does. He promises her that everyone else gets out safe if they stay together.
She decides not to pull away. This might be the sexiest embrace I’ve ever seen on screen, arms locked behind her back, nowhere to run, and you can watch him physically calm down because of her scent.
Power’s back on, which means the Ren might already be upstairs. Director Ding dodges a group by hiding behind a door, finds two interns, tells them to evacuate. Wu Nongyu barely gets her friend out a window before the Ren break in with kill orders.
Everyone regroups. She proposes linking two construction cranes to bridge two buildings for an escape route. Director Ding, turns out, watched his dad operate cranes as a kid. Bad back and all, he takes the controls.
As people start crossing, Xie Xinxu stays behind to fight off the Ren, then goes to jump the gap himself, and gets clocked by the moving crane arm and knocked clean off the bridge. I cannot express how ridiculous and how funny this is. What is happening??

Affinity Episode Recap: 6
He grabs the suspension cable on the way down. She tries to pull him up and falls in first instead. He mutters “idiot” under his breath and dives down to catch her anyway, landing safely, visibly thrilled she was willing to fall with him. Falling in love while literally falling is unhinged. Landing in a pool of heart-shaped balloons makes it funnier. This scene is so ridiculous. Who comes up with these ideas?
She insists she just doesn’t want him haunting her dreams forever. Then the octopus in the rooftop pool starts acting up. I thought this show had peaked. It had not. There is a mutated octopus. I am cry-laughing and I cannot stop watching.
Turns out the octopus might be infected and controlled too, apparently Nan Xing is neurologically linked to it. Nan Xing steps out and gets the octopus to grab Wu Nongyu. His demand: let the octopus feed on Xie Xinxu’s blood. He agrees instantly. When she tries to call it off, he won’t let her, forces the octopus to keep drinking until it dies from it. He’s wrecked afterward.
Wu Nongyu rushes to check on him. He kisses her to steal her strength instead. The octopus dies. He, completely unbothered, says next time she calms him down she’ll need to be more intense. Because the octopus dies, Nan Xing faints. Wu Nongyu worries the kiss counted as a bond. He says no, he’d never form one that casually.
They regroup with Director Ding on the subway for a transfusion. Xia Yuyan, watching, is annoyed Wu Nongyu’s fine while Xie Xinxu’s badly hurt. Director Ding comes out half-covering his face, blaming a toothache, tells everyone to stay out of the compartment. Privately, he asks Wu Nongyu if she knew Xie Xinxu was a Ren the whole time.
She admits she did. Turns out Xie Xinxu injured half his face. Worried he could lose control again, Director Ding wants to leave him behind. She refuses, insists on finding an inhibitor first, believing he’s only ever acted this way to protect everyone.
Xia Yuyan sneaks into the subway car and smears her own blood on his lips, trying to seduce him, she’s been in love with him since becoming his deputy as well as a Type A Yin, thinks she can help him as well as be a good match to be lovers. The Xia Yuyan inducer reveal was creepy.
He shoves her off. Wu Nongyu arrives right as this happens. He weakly clings to her, begs her not to hand him over to Xia Yuyan. She lies to Xia Yuyan, claims they’re already bonded, and drives her off. He, fully losing control now, kisses her frantically.
This actor is genuinely so good at playing a man with zero self-control and super desperate. It’s spicy, she’s scared but kisses him back anyway, and the two of them collapsing to the train floor mid-kiss is a genuinely great scene.

Affinity Episode Recap 5-6: My Thoughts
This show just went from “unhinged but fun” to “unhinged and I am obsessed” in the span of two episodes, and I did not see that coming from a giant mutant octopus subplot. The Xie Xinxu reveal, that he manufactured his entire persona around her offhand description of a dream man, is genuinely well done, it recontextualizes everything from the first four episodes and makes his obsession feel earned rather than random.
The crane bridge sequence is peak B-grade chaos, I was laughing out loud watching him get smacked off it, and then somehow the show earns real emotional weight two scenes later with the octopus blood sacrifice and that first kiss.
Affinity’s second kiss is on the train floor is the best chemistry the show’s delivered yet, genuinely spicy, genuinely desperate. This was the scene thatโs popped up on all the socials which got me to watch Affinity.
And it’s wild that a scene involving an infected mutant octopus and a subway train infirmary can sit in the same two episodes as some of the most charged romantic material so far. I’m fully here for whatever comes next.
