Affinity: Episode Recap 9-10

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Wu Nongyu gets drugged into attending a government matchmaking event, only to find out she’s on a countdown herself. She has to form a pact with a Ren before 25 years of age or die from organ failure. Xie Xinxu shows up as a shock competitor, wins the duel, and the two strike a fake-marriage deal for mutual benefit.

Episode 10 gives us the wedding, complete with sabotage, a confetti gag, real vows, and two genuinely great kisses, before ending on Wu Siyuan walking in on his sister in bed with the man he specifically warned her about.

Affinity Episode Recap: 9

Wu Siyuan hands his sister a photo of a man named Lin Juan, tells her to pay attention to him at an upcoming matchmaking event. She refuses but on the day of the event she wakes up in a wheelchair, already at the venue. Turns out her own brother drugged her bedtime milk. Secretary Zhang insists she stick around and finish the process regardless.

This whole Gladiator-meets-Hunger-Games setup is actually pretty cool, even with AI-generated visuals. It’s sci-fi, so blending it with old-world spectacle references works.

At the event, her senior Xia Yuyan taunts her about “Teacher Gu,” then drops a genuine bombshell: as a Yin, Wu Nongyu has to form a pact before she turns twenty-five or face rapid organ failure and death from an internal virus. This Yin virus 25 year deadline is only 6 months away.

Xia Yuyan warns her off competing for the best Ren candidates. Genuinely a nice twist, I did not expect the show to flip the mutual need this way, and it changes the whole power dynamic between them.

Furious, she calls her brother out for hiding this from her. He admits he wanted her to grow up carefree while he handled this eventuality. He explains he groomed Lin Juan specifically for his absolute loyalty, even suggests she can treat him like a “blood bag” if needed.

Meanwhile, Siyuan shows his own ruthless streak at the facility, coldly rejecting a woman’s offer to help with his own active virus, insisting he decides when he needs treatment. Yes, he is affected too!

In the arena, Lin Juan dominates until the final challenger arrives: Xie Xinxu.

She tries to flee when he approaches the spectator area, but guards warn they’ll shoot any challenger who steps toward the audience. To protect him, she stays put. He wins, shattering Lin Juan’s sword. I expected a cheap fight scene. Wrong. The choreography is genuinely convincing, showy, well-paced, satisfying without dragging.

Winners approach the Yin they want. Another Ren gets shot dead for trying to force himself on Xia Yuyan after she rejects him. Realizing Xie Xinxu could meet the same fate, she accepts him when he kneels. They negotiate privately afterward with him shackled and muzzled.

She gives him a legal identity and freedom, he gives blood for her inhibitor research, and it conveniently gets her out of the forced marriage too. He agrees, on one condition, he needs physical comfort whenever he loses control. She agrees to holding, nothing more without her explicit say-so.

He could easily break the chains and walk away from the contract entirely but he signs it anyway. Says his loyalty depends on wanting her affection. The whole breaking-the-shackles, shoving-the-table-aside moment is genuinely awesome, arrogant, powerful, and yes, extremely sexy. Loved it.

Afterward, she tells Secretary Zhang to start wedding prep, but keep the groom swap a secret from her brother for now. Lin Juan’s frustrated at being caught in the middle, but accepts it gracefully.

Affinity Episode Recap: 10

She finally gets a proper meal after starving herself into the wedding dress. He teases her appetite, she defends the “starving ghost” routine as bridal necessity and they trade genuine compliments. He gifts her a pendant coated in anaesthetic and tells her to use it if he ever loses control or breaks their deal, and calls her “wife” for the first time.

On the wedding day, Xia Yuyan hands her a glass of water laced with sedative and brings a man in to assault her while she’s supposedly out cold. But Wu Nongyu clocked Xia Yuyan’s black nail polish beforehand and only faked passing out.

The second Xia Yuyan leaves, she knocks the intruder unconscious and rushes toward the ceremony to stop her brother from spotting the groom swap. Xia Yuyan, now in a wedding gown herself, intercepts her, and the fight leaves Wu Nongyu overwhelmed until Xie Xinxu shows up and knocks her out with a vase.

She makes it to the altar just in time. As he’s signing the marriage certificate, she blasts a party popper of confetti straight into her brother’s eyes, blinding him just long enough that he hands her off to the “groom” without realizing it’s not Lin Juan, then rushes off to wash his eyes. Xie Xinxu, amused, just rolls with it.

They exchange rings and vows, real ones, bound in life and death, his love promised endless in a finite world. Really nice vows. The ceremony ends in a proper kiss at the lectern, and the chemistry here is excellent. The veil-over-both-heads touch is a nice detail too.

That night, the room’s freezing and he’s clearly struggling as Xia Yuyan spiked the wedding champagne. He pulls her into his arms, chasing her scent for comfort. She tries to pull back but he throws her onto the bed and holds her, admits she’s the only thing keeping him steady.

Whoever’s directing this show is genuinely good at these scenes. He holds himself back, just asks her to stay close, reminds her to use the pendant if needed. They spend the night curled up together as she clutches the anaesthetic pendant just in case.

Next morning, she wakes up in his arms right as the doorbell rings. It’s her brother, arriving for lunch and this is when he realises who his sister has married. Both men flash back to their earlier violent run-in, where Xie Xinxu promised him a “surprise” next time. She panics, unsure how to explain any of this. Xie Xinxu just pulls her closer and stares her brother down, pure provocation.

Affinity Episode Recap 9-10: My Thoughts

This is easily the strongest stretch of the show so far. The reveal that Wu Nongyu has her own ticking clock completely rebalances the power dynamic between them as it means itโ€™s no longer just about him needing her anymore, and it makes the fake-marriage arrangement feel like a genuine partnership rather than one-sided obsession.

I also really liked the premise of Wu Siyuan being so calculative and this whole time planning for a Wu Nongyu and Lin Juan marriage.

The arena fight scene actually delivering real, competent choreography was a pleasant surprise after some of the show’s B-grade moments. The wedding was fun to watch and I enjoyed the sabotage plot, the confetti gag, and then two genuinely great, well-shot kisses back-to-back.

This show keeps proving it can do both chaos and real romantic tension in the same episode, and I’m fully strapped in for whatever Wu Siyuan does with what he just walked in on.
