Affinity: Episode Recap 31-32

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Wu Nongyu finds herself living an entirely different life in a snowy homestay, with no memory of Xie Xinxu, yet somehow drawn to him anyway. What looks like a sweet parallel universe romance turns out to be something far darker. Episode 32 reveals it is all a dream, his ninth attempt to reach her while she lies comatose, and what she does with that knowledge is devastating.

Affinity Episode Recap: 31

A snowy landscape. A whispered thank you from a man she cannot quite place. Wu Nongyu wakes from it the way she always does, the details gone but the feeling remaining. She treats these recurring dreams like her own private sitcom, imagining herself hopping between parallel lives. In this one she is on a gap year, helping her brother run a homestay in her hometown.

She is hiding a layoff behind the cover story. Quiet rural life is doing its job as a healing process, whether she admits it or not. Her friend Chen Yiyi drops by for firewood one day. Nongyu mentions a mystery guest booked for a full month and unreachable ever since. Yiyi takes one look at his photo and starts pushing her perpetually single friend toward a winter romance.

Then Nongyu finds a man collapsed in the snow. Mountain roads are blocked and no ambulance is coming. She hauls him back to the homestay. It is Xie Xinxu.

He wakes looking at her with something between surprise and worry. He claims he came to photograph rare bears, got caught in a blizzard, lost his luggage, and passed out from exhaustion. She is stunned. This is the mystery guest.

Checking him in, she notices his initials X.X.X. and jokes that it is an interesting name. For a moment he looks as if he is hoping she remembers something. Her blank, unfamiliar expression tells him otherwise.

She tries to be a good host and serves him instant noodles. They turn out to be expired. Guilt kicks in and she offers to move him to a guest room instead. He fakes dizziness, blames the noodles, and angles his way into staying in her personal quarters. She caves, worried about his health.

Night falls. Power cuts, standard for the area during heavy snow. She heads out to check the breaker but comes face to face with a bear! She panics and runs back to a door locked from the inside. He opens it just in time and she collapses into his arms. The bear breaks the door down anyway and they end up hiding behind a cabinet together. Why is there a bear? Such a strange addition, even for this show.

He holds her close and reassures her the animal will move on once it is fed. She leans into it more than she means to, the feeling outlasting the danger. Unsettled by her own thoughts, she jumps up to check the fridge, nearly gets hit by a falling drink, and he catches it before it reaches her. Proximity does its usual number on her heart rate.

Morning comes and he fixes the broken door and windows. She hands him a drink. He takes it straight from her hand and her pulse spikes again. She catches herself wondering if a kiss would feel even better and tries to shove the thought down. He mentions he is handy with a lot of things and asks if there is anything else she needs.

On impulse she blurts out a question about whether he knows how to kiss. Immediately mortified, she tries to flee, blames her mouth for outrunning her brain, and blames being single too long. He stops her, agrees gently, and claims he is not exactly experienced either.

They kiss and she is so nervous she forgets to breathe entirely. Afterward he asks softly if she needs a lesson in that too. Flustered, she stammers a hasty goodnight and bolts.

I do not yet know what this episode is building toward or how it ties into everything else. This is not the first time the show has played with time jumps, but this one feels less like reality and more like something adjacent to it. Maybe it is meant to prove their fates are tangled no matter what world they are in, that her feelings survive even under all that anger.

Either way I am loving watching her lose the fight against her own attraction to him. That slow motion straw sipping shot had no business being as appealing as it was. And yes, there are far too many scenes of him leaning in close for no real reason. Cheesy. Works anyway.

Affinity Episode Recap: 32

The previous nightโ€™s kisses will not leave her alone, playing on loop in her head. He shows up to help her open a can and offers to assist with anything she needs. She takes the offer literally and asks him to teach her how to breathe properly mid kiss.

He agrees, explains rhythm and the importance of knowing when to pause. Then he loses himself completely once they start, forgetting his own lesson plan entirely. She proposes a signal: a touch to his ear means stop. The kiss is intense and spicy. He is exceptionally good at pinning her down against her stated resistance while she gives in anyway.

He agrees to the signal. He ignores it anyway once things heat back up. He only stops when he notices she is quietly crying. Guilt floods in fast. He apologizes, admits he has been captivated since the moment they met and is increasingly desperate for her affection. He offers to move out entirely and give her space. She surprises him by suggesting they actually try dating for real instead.

Domestic bliss follows. Watching him do dishes fills her with a happiness that feels, finally, real. But the seams keep showing. At one point she spots โ€œdonโ€™t trust himโ€ scrawled on a calendar, gone the second she blinks.

Wu Siyuan and Li Xiang show up to interrupt the peace. She introduces Xie Xinxu as her boyfriend. Siyuan pulls him aside for the obligatory serious talk, ends up liking him instantly, and hands him a lollipop. It is bittersweet watching them both back on screen, even in a dream, married, and seeing Siyuan this loose and playful was such a nice, aching contrast.

Later Siyuan climbs onto the roof to grab hidden savings for a celebration dinner. Li Xiang startles him, he tumbles off his chair, and she helps him inside. Xie Xinxu climbs up to patch the hole left behind. Nongyu follows, stares at the spot, and gets slammed by a memory: the real one, her brother falling to his actual death.

The whole illusion cracks open. She realizes Xie Xinxu had taken her back to the forest where they dream and he has been entering her dreams this entire time while she lies comatose in the real world. Doctors have told him she is not unconscious from injury. She is simply choosing not to wake up. This is his ninth attempt to reach her, despite how nearly impossible dream connection is supposed to be.

Inside the dream a cold, fully aware version of her confronts him. She lays it out. His earlier attempts tried forcing her to remember reality, which just collapsed the dream and made her build a new one each time.

This ninth try he changed tactics, avoided any mention of reality, and hoped she would choose to leave on her own. It did not matter. His own name triggers her subconscious anyway, warnings like โ€œliarโ€ and โ€œdonโ€™t trust himโ€ bleeding through regardless.

She cannot un-feel the pain of being used as a weapon against her own brother, the cold war it created between them in his final days. Siyuanโ€™s fall is burned into her permanently, and she would rather stay lost in a dream than face a reality where he is gone because of what Xie Xinxu did.

He holds her, begs for a chance to fix things, and promises to protect her from more pain. She does not move. She tells him she finally understands the point of these nine dreams. No matter who they are, in any life, they fall for each other instantly, pulled together against their will. And she can use that. Let him fall in love with her over and over, then take it away every single time. Eternal loss on repeat as her own revenge.

She pushes him off, ignoring every apology, and asks if he is happy with the resentful version of her his own actions created. She declares she is writing her next story without him in it.

Clever writing, reframing everything the last episode left murky. She is brilliant in this scene, in real pain and yet weaponizing that pain right back at him on her own terms. Watching him realize she manipulated the dream cycle deliberately, engineering love just to shatter it again and again, breaks something in him completely.

He sobs and begs her to stop, to come back. She has no intention of either. It clearly guts him watching her this consumed by anger. Excellent work from the writers and the cast here. Heartbreaking in exactly the way it was built to be.

Affinity Episode Recap 31-32: My Thoughts

This two episode stretch pulled off something I did not think this show had in it: a layered, emotionally complex twist that recontextualizes an entire arc I had written off as a random detour.

The slow burn domestic dream sequence works beautifully as a trap, lulling both Nongyu and the audience into comfort before yanking the rug out completely. What really gets me is the reveal of her intent. Wu Nongyu’s revenge dream cycle was calculated revenge rather than just grief is such a sharp, unexpected character choice, and it makes her pain feel active instead of passive.

Xie Xinxuโ€™s manipulation finally catching up to him emotionally, watching him break down begging her to stop, carries real weight because we have seen exactly how much damage his own choices caused.

Somewhere between a bear attack and a roof hiding place this show found its most devastating material yet, and I did not expect that going in. The last quarter of the drama sees it moving into a very serious and emotional momentum. Gone are the silly tropes and bad genres.
