Table of Contents
TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Xie Xinxu decides he’s done being lenient and starts taking full control of the relationship, kisses included. They team up to steal inhibitors, barely escape a shootout, and get cornered by the Bureau, only for him to save her and drop a hint that he’s going to stop holding back entirely.
Episode 8 pulls back the curtain on Nan Xing’s tragic backstory, gives us a genuinely emotional dream sequence, and ends with the reveal that every suitor Wu Nongyu’s brother has ever set her up with was secretly a Ren.
Affinity Episode Recap: 7
Wu Nongyu falls to the ground, terrified. Xie Xinxu chases her down like a hungry wolf and kisses her anyway. This one is intense. Genuinely well-choreographed. She’s scared, but she gives in anyway.
She has nowhere left to run. He picks her up, puts her on his lap, keeps kissing her. He restrains her hands every time now, and somehow that only makes it hotter. She panics. He’s afraid of hurting her, so he forces himself to stop. Her kisses only stabilize him temporarily. He still needs a real inhibitor.
She changes into a Blade uniform and goes with him to find one. They blend in with a group of Blades to grab inhibitors. He keeps her tucked into his arms the whole time, terrified they’ll be found out. She’s sprayed half a bottle of perfume on herself to mask her scent. It almost works, she gets four inhibitors, then sneezes at the worst possible moment and gives herself away.
He drags her out, and they end up hiding in a car trunk while the Blades open fire outside. She hides in his arms, terrified. He holds her tight, and for the first time we see him being gentle and protective rather than possessive. The Blades eventually leave, assuming they killed them. She notices something’s off with him, gets out of the trunk, leaves the inhibitors behind for him, and runs.
She locks the basement door on her way out and runs straight into more Blades. They rip the inhibitor out of her hands. Gunshots. The Bureau shows up and surrounds the whole area. The crane explosion in this scene is so fake it’s funny. Her brother, Wu Siyuan the Bureau captain, stands above and calmly orders his men to shoot everyone except her. His delivery of “fire” is weirdly cool.
Ah Ze shields Nan Xing with his own body, heroic, terribly acted. Nan Xing stares at the lollipop in Ah Ze’s hand, grieving and furious, right as a streak of light snatches Wu Nongyu away. It’s Xie Xinxu.
He asks if she was going to abandon him. She says no. She realizes he’s burning up. His sickly makeup here is so bad, I get what they’re going for, but it might’ve worked better with none at all.
He explains he ran into a wave of Blades looking for her, if she hadn’t left, none of it would’ve happened. He decides he’s spoiled her too much. From now on, he’s taking the lead. She doesn’t get a say.

Affinity Episode Recap: 8
He pins her down, declares he’s done being lenient, he’s taking full control now. Mid-intensity, she notices a fresh wound on his shoulder and actually worries about him, admitting her attempt to leave earlier was real. She calls him out for treating himself so recklessly, he’d injected an inhibitor with such force he hurt himself doing it.
He vows to earn her love properly and form a real pact. She pushes back, a healthy relationship needs mutual respect and understanding, concepts his possessiveness and emotional detachment might just be incapable of. She also asks him directly about the rumours he killed his parents. He denies it flatly. The conversation gets cut off by Nan Xing showing up, barely holding together.
Nan Xing threatens to “tear them apart” if he loses control, demands her blood, claims it could still save him since she hasn’t formed a pact yet. He tearfully describes being used as a weapon by the Bureau, then discarded as a lab rat. Xie Xinxu isn’t buying it, clocks the performance for what it is. He ties Nan Xing to a pillar and pulls her away.
Left alone, Nan Xing comforts himself with a lollipop, thinking about his friend Ah Ze, the two of them once dreaming of faking their own deaths to escape a system that treated them as trash, hoping for somewhere Ren and Yin could just live free.
Wu Nongyu comes back briefly to confront him, asking why he’s taken so many lives given everything he’s suffered. She leaves him an inhibitor anyway. Before he can reach it, her brother’s tactical team shows up. Siyuan, treating him as nothing but dangerous trash, orders him shot.
At the perimeter, Xie Xinxu hands her back to her brother’s people, tells her to keep his survival secret, frames his condition to the Bureau as a “stress response,” warns that if he goes berserk and hurts anyone, it’s on her. Tells her she’s finally free. Vanishes. Siyuan finds her, and she brushes it off with a vague excuse about being chased by lunatics all night.
At home, she tries to sleep, gets jolted awake by a storm, and sees Xie Xinxu eerily standing in her room. He claims heโd changed his mind about letting her go, before kissing her forcefully. She tumbles out of bed and realizes it was a dream, and, surprisingly, not a nightmare, an erotic one instead.
Later, her brother makes her soup and tells her the investigation into Xie Xinxu’s parents’ deaths closed for lack of evidence before he supposedly died. He suggests marriage as the fix for her lingering fear and hands her an invite to an official government matchmaking event, part of the state’s push for Yin-Ren pacts.
She’s stunned to realize every suitor he’s ever set her up with was secretly a Ren all along. Genuinely, this might be the first episode where nothing felt stupid, cringe, or badly done. There’s hope yet.

Affinity Episode Recap 7-8: My Thoughts
This batch is where Xie Xinxu’s possessiveness stops feeling purely unhinged and starts feeling earned. Watching him choose gentleness over control in that car trunk scene, then flip right back to “I’m taking the lead now” the moment he thinks she tried to leave, is such a compelling contradiction. Great that the show’s finally letting Wu Nongyu push back on it in a way that feels real.
Nan Xing’s traggic backstory landing right after his manipulative act got exposed is a smart structural choice too. It doesn’t excuse what he’s doing, but it recontextualizes him as genuinely tragic rather than just a villain.
And that dream sequence, going from storm-jolt to “wait, that wasn’t a nightmare,” was amusing. Between the inhibitor heist, the car trunk hideout, and the Bureau standoff, this felt like the most tightly plotted stretch so far, less random chaos, more actual tension. I’m fully hooked.
