Affinity Episode Recap: 35
The three figures in the woods drop to their knees before Lin Juan can even finish his approach. They’re begging, not attacking. They want Xie Xinxu’s help saving their village.
Back in Xiaoshan Village, the chief lays out the situation. Tourism was booming until a “ghost” showed up behind the ancestral hall. Three months back, a filming crew’s opening ceremony got derailed when the apparition scared off a female investor, who fled and left her camera behind.
She’s been stuck at the chief’s house ever since, refusing to leave without her footage. The Bureau won’t help without a mountain of paperwork, so the chief hopes Xie Xinxu can just handle it directly, retrieve the camera, expose the truth, force the authorities’ hand.
He agrees. That night, the three of them slip into the dark ancestral hall. Two goals: the camera, and the third fragment, which he’s convinced is hidden there too. He warns them to move fast, Secretary Zhang’s men are a far bigger threat than any local haunting.
Lin Juan’s nerves get the better of him, his legs go weak as heโs afraid of ghosts, and something drops onto him mid-search, causing a brief panic before Xie Xinxu calmly identifies it as bird droppings. They find the fragment. They solve the mystery. The “ghost” is just a bird wrapped in red cloth.
We’re here for a glass fragment, and somehow the writers keep inventing the strangest possible detours to get one. Ghosts, seriously? Odd little arc, but it did the job.
Xie Xinxu stays behind despite the eerie atmosphere, making sure the camera actually gets recovered safely. Watching him step up for a village of strangers shifts something in how Wu Nongyu sees him, a kindness she hadn’t clocked before.
The village throws a barbecue to celebrate. Xie Xinxu sulks a little, jealous, watching her hand meat skewers to Lin Juan, and drifts off to sit alone. She notices, brings him a skewer she’d set aside just for him, and his mood flips instantly. A local kid drags them into a gas-canister game, and Xie Xinxu comes out of it with a hilariously high-pitched voice, everyone cracking up.
As the night winds down, she preps her injection which is overdue. She hands her keys to Lin Juan, asks him to wake her in the morning as she always has trouble waking up after the medication. Once she’s out, Lin Juan calls Xie Xinxu and Xie Xinsu slips into her room for a secret blood exchange.
Lin Juan, unhappy about the whole arrangement, keeps watch outside, working through a bag of candy to steady his nerves. It almost falls apart when she stirs awake mid-procedure. He ducks behind a screen just in time. She’s suspicious enough to start reaching toward exactly where he’s hiding.

Affinity Episode Recap: 36
A knock breaks the tension. Lin Juan spots Xie Xinxu behind the screen instantly, plays dumb to keep her calm. Much to Xie Xinxu discomfort, Lin Juan offers her a massage, gets turned down with a reminder she is still a married woman. He goes back out and when she’s back asleep Xie Xinxu comes back out.
He watches her sleep. She murmurs her brother’s name in a dream. Guilt hits him hard. He kisses her hand, quietly, and leaves. It’s a rough realization for him that she’s nowhere near reconciled with what happened, still grieving, still haunted. He cries. Sadness, mostly. Guilt, too.
Director Xia is furious over dinner. She’s finally connected the dots, the fragments Siyuan delivered were fakes, since Wu Nongyu’s clearly still chasing a third one. She orders Chief Zhang to throw every field agent at finding them both within two days.
Lu Ziye, bonded to her daughter Xia Yuyan, offers to help and gets mocked for his uselessness instead. Director Xia dismisses him outright, reminds him his entire job is keeping Yuyan happy.
With all three fragments finally in hand, the group needs somewhere secure to develop the cure. Xie Xinxu suggests Mr. Ding’s suburban home which also has a private lab. She agrees, but her trust cracks a little when she finds blood-exchange equipment in his bag while digging for a tissue in the car. Why would he still be carrying gear for virus transfer?
At Ding’s place, he steps out to return a call from Lu Ziye, and it turns out Lu’s been feeding him intel this whole time. Great little surprise. Lu supplied accurate fragment locations, including Xiaoshan Village, while feeding the Bureau false leads. He’s desperate for the cure to finish so he can finally escape the Xia family’s grip.
Back in the lab, she decides to test her suspicion directly. Claims her virus is acting up from overwork and asks Lin Juan for her usual suppressant. The men are surprised that last nightโs transfusion didnโt work. That night, she ambushes Xie Xinxu mid blood-exchange in her room.
The truth finally comes out. For two years he’s been quietly sacrificing his own health, filtering the virus out of her system. The injections weren’t medication at all, just nutrients laced with sedatives to keep her asleep through his visits.
She presses him on why he hid it. He admits he was afraid, afraid she’d look at him with disgust, afraid it would drag up painful memories every time they were face to face. She takes in the weight of that devotion and tells him plainly, love that’s too controlling or too self-effacing both create pressure.
Tells him to stop hiding what he feels and just love her, openly, without apology. He pulls her in, kisses her, everything finally cracking open. He cries again, and again he sells it completely. Months of anguish finally let go. Genuinely good acting. He got me too.

Affinity Episode Recap 35-36: My Thoughts
This batch takes the show’s silliest instincts, ghosts, gas canisters, a bird in a sheet, and somehow still lands two of its most emotionally significant reveals. The ghost hunt village arc doing double duty as both comic relief and a genuine turning point for how Wu Nongyu sees Xie Xinxu works better than it has any right to, and that quiet skewer gesture at the barbecue is such a small, effective beat.
But episode 36 is where this stretch really earns its keep. Two years of Xie Xinxu’s secret self-sacrifice is such a devastating reveal, and it recontextualizes basically every scene where he’s seemed evasive or overly cautious around her.
Watching her call out the imbalance in his love, too much control on one side, too much self-erasure on the other, feels like real emotional maturity from a character who’s spent a lot of this show reacting rather than reflecting. This might be the most quietly devastating episode since Li Xiang’s death, and I did not expect a fake ghost hunt to be the runway into it.
