Affinity: Episode Recap 3-4 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Gu Yanqing saves Wu Nongyu from a cadaver attack and gets weirdly possessive about it. They discover the “corpses” are actually Affinity B carriers, and the whole Ren/Yin/Pact system gets explained, conveniently justifying why this show is about to be very touchy-feely.

Then Nan Xing, the Ren leader, drops his security guard disguise and declares open season on the facility staff. Episode 4 is basically one long chase up fifty-four flights of stairs, ending with Gu Yanqing finally dropping his act and confirming he’s Xie Xinxu.

Affinity Episode Recap: 3

Gu Yanqing takes down the attacker. He coldly declares no one else has the right to touch her and he carries her back to her ward. There’s a moment where he leans in like he’s about to kiss her while she’s out cold. He pulls back the second she wakes up. His breathing in that scene sold the “barely holding it together” act so well.

She notices he’s hiding his hand behind his back. She assumes he’s injured so she rushes to check on him and face-plants straight into his arms. It rattles him. He tells her off for pulling stunts like that anyway.

Then the power cuts out causing comms to go out too. They head down to the basement morgue to investigate. The room should hold over a hundred bodies but it’s weirdly empty. They find Director Ding hiding under a bed, shaking, describing corpses standing up and walking out on their own. One apparently stood on his hand. Genuinely unsettling image, credit where it’s due.

Turns out the “cadavers” are Affinity B carriers. This is where the show finally drops its big lore dump. Ren (B-types) are dangerous and emotionally volatile. Yin (A-types, like her) can stabilize them through a “Pact,” a permanent bond formed via “deep physical interaction.” Ohhh. Okay. THAT’S why this show is going to be dripping in intimate scenes. Mystery solved.

Except it’s a trap. Nan Xing the Ren leader, has been disguised as a security guard this whole time. He overhears a doctor mocking the Renโ€™s suffering, drops the act, sedates the guy, and announces a full “hunting game” against the staff. Genuinely good villain energy from this actor. Gunfire breaks out and Gu Yanqing shields Wu Nongyu from a Ren gunman.

They eventually reach the security room and watch the Ren tear through the halls on camera. Then Nan Xing looks dead into the lens, fully aware he’s being watched, and issues a chilling little challenge. Rough around the edges in places, but the actual bones of this story are solid. Could’ve been a proper big-budget premise in another life.

Affinity Episode Recap:4

Director Ding accidentally hits the elevator intercom button, alerting the Ren with thier conversaiton. They scramble. Wu Nongyu grabs keys off a guard and they rush the elevator. The metal detector bit here made no sense, why does he need to lift her when he could just grab it himself, and Director Ding’s trip that sends the keys flying is some genuinely bad acting but so funny.

They lock the lift just in time, though it leaves her gasping for air. Gu Yanqing reaches to help her up but Director Ding grabs his hand instead, complaining about his old age. Comedy gold, unintentional or not.

Elevator’s dead so they have to climb fifty-four floors on foot. Director Ding runs off to warn everyone else. Gu Yanqing and Wu Nongyu head for the satellite station to send a distress signal. She’s daunted by the climb but insists on sticking with him rather than slowing the Director down. They spot a new transit station on the way, noted as a possible escape route later.

At the top, she finds a cabinet and she’s hoping for a password lock. Instead, she spills everything out of it and trips the power. Turns out it’s not a keypad at all, it’s a fax machine (because we use fax machine in 2051??), which they use to contact the Bureau.

The scene of him leaning over her into the cupboard was so cringe, genuinely uncomfortable to watch. Power trips again. He heads to check the breakers, tells her to shout if anything happens.

Lights come back on but he’s nowhere to be seen and a Ren shows up. She runs for her life, collides straight into him, and he carries her on his back to escape. Clinging to him, she spots a specific mark on his neck making her even more suspicious of his true identity.

More Ren incoming. He calls her a handful and locks her on the rooftop “for her safety” while he deals with the pests. Not wanting to be trapped, she tries to climb down with a rope but it’s too short. She tries swinging to another platform and nearly falls. This whole sequence is ridiculous and I loved every second of it.

Turns out he’d been standing below the entire time, quietly watching her struggle because he didn’t want to interrupt, and laughing at her. I giggled too. He “catches” her fall with his own body in a moment of genuinely awful acting, I actually laughed out loud at how bad it was. When questioned about the mark on his neck, he brushes it off as a bruise she caused from the cabinet door.

They run into more Ren near the dorms. He hands her the keys, tells her to go, says he’ll handle it with his remaining inhibitors. She follows anyway and watches him ruthlessly wipe them out, confirming exactly what she suspected. He finally drops the act and eerily greets her as Xie Xinxu.

She’s stunned. He was supposed to be dead from illness four years ago. He calls his survival “a secret,” very casually, as one does. Every memory of the kidnapping and rescue comes flooding back, and she finally puts it together, he’s been manipulating her this entire time. She confronts him outright: was all of it staged just to trick her into forming a Pact?

Affinity Episode Recap 3-4: My Thoughts

Four episodes in and this show has fully committed to being an unhinged, chaotic mess I cannot stop watching. The Ren and Yin virus explained is such a perfect, absurd justification for why this whole series is clearly going to be wall-to-wall intimate scenes, and I love the premise.

The stairwell chase sequence is peak so-bad-it’s-good territory, the fke injury, the rope climb, that catch, all of it terrible in the best possible way. But underneath it all, there’s a genuinely strong plot here.

The Ren mythology, Nan Xing’s villain setup, the government bureau angle, this could’ve been a much bigger budget production in another universe. The Gu Yanqing reveal landing right at the end of episode 4 is exactly the payoff I wanted, and now that we know he’s Xie Xinxu, I’m fully ready to see how deep this manipulation actually goes.
