Affinity: Episode Recap 39-40

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

And here we are at the finale. Director Ding’s full confession ends decades of obsession, manipulation, and one impossible cure, and Wu Nongyu’s mother wakes up after all this time. The finale delivers the real answer to the missing component, a genuine sacrifice, and an ending that somehow earns every bit of its happiness.

Affinity Episode Recap: 39

Ding keeps confessing, and it just gets worse. His wife Lin Yu’s coma sent him spiralling, chasing a theory that a high enough A Virus concentration might wake her. He used his own daughter’s blood for the experiments, her viral count ran unusually high, and that’s what finally pushed Siyuan to report his own father to the authorities.

An associate named Dayu bolted with the formula once the scandal broke, terrified the research would get shut down entirely. Ding staged a fire, planted fake remains, and faked both his and Lin Yu’s deaths in one move. New face, double eyelids specifically because Lin Yu liked them, new name, and years spent hunting the missing catalyst under the name Wu Ming.

Eventually he gave up on a real cure, convinced himself the missing piece didn’t exist, and with his health failing on both sides, pivoted to a different plan entirely, wipe out the virus by triggering organ failure in every infected person, Yin and Ren alike. The formula data sat locked inside three glass fragments, and he manipulated Xie Xinxu into helping hunt them down before their paths diverged for good.

She asks if Siyuan’s death ever gave him pause. He cries. He still calls it necessary, a sacrifice for the greater good. He takes her to see her comatose mother, warning them both that any escape attempt gets Lin Juan and the other captives killed.

Once he’s gone, she and Xie Xinxu start planning a rescue. Then Lin Yu’s condition crashes, vomiting blood, and Xie Xinxu performs an emergency transfusion with his own blood. Somehow, it wakes her. Overjoyed and horrified in the same breath, she begs Ding to stop, reminding him her research was always meant to protect life, never end it.

That reaches him. He agrees to give up the test subjects’ location right as sirens close in. Before the arrest, he asks for one last moment with his daughter, telling her he never wanted her or Siyuan pulled into any of this.

He admits he hesitated when Xie Xinxu pushed to bring her into the institute, but ultimately decided that if his daughter had to bond with a Ren, this was the best possible one. He reveals the wedding gift, Lin Yu’s favourite pen, was his way of sending her mother’s blessing even from hiding.

He reflects on the cruel irony, Siyuan’s report once effectively killed him, and years later he indirectly set the wheels in motion that led to his own son’s death.

For all his coldness, it turns out he’s been quietly protecting her the whole time, the stimulant that saved Xie Xinxu in Sunset Forest, the watch signal during the Xiao Zhang kidnapping, all him. As police lead him away, she clings to him, sobbing, grief and understanding tangled together.

Affinity Episode Recap: 40

Director Xia gets formally arrested, her son-in-law cooperating in hopes of leniency, and the truth about her decade of criminal control over Mugang, plus the original Qiuxiao Manor murders, finally surfaces through a key witness’s confession.

Wu Nongyu discovers Xie Xinxu’s blood carries the missing cure component all along, exactly why her mother woke after his transfusion. Lin Yu notes it makes the voice go sharp and high pitched when inhaled, and it clicks for Xie Xinxu, a childhood game with gas found near satellite wreckage in Xiaoshan Village. He rushes back, but the chief tells him the gas is gone, just an empty bottle left.

With Lin Juan and the others critical, he asks Lin Yu whether extracting the component from his own blood could save them. She warns him the substance has fused with him now, so full extraction means possible permanent coma. He hides this from Wu Nongyu at first, then finally brings it to her.

She refuses outright, terrified of losing him, insisting there’s still time to search elsewhere. He shifts the conversation instead, suggesting they stop dwelling on tragedy and just focus on each other. They reconcile properly and get a short stretch of real domestic happiness.

Then he makes his choice. A kiss lands with real dread, the unmistakable feel of goodbye, a man who’s already decided to sacrifice himself. One morning he tells her he’s leaving on a long business trip, explaining that while she’d eventually find the component some other way, Lin Juan and the rest can’t wait that long.

He adds, quietly, that if he’s the one lying in a coma, her love for him will drive her to find the cure faster than she’d ever push for anyone else.

Months later, we see that his sacrifice works. Lin Yu and Wu Nongyu develop the drug from his blood, the virus gets eradicated, and life resets to normal. Xie Xinxu is in a coma but Wu Nongyu doesnโ€™t feel sad and knows that heโ€™s just a sleep temporarily.

Lin Juan gets scouted as a trainee, and she teases him about his scandal proof clean living and wishes him well.

She documents the entire journey and sends it as a message to any extraterrestrial civilization listening. Scientists on Earth decode this message, revealing the missing component was actually helium all along, and moved by her story, arrange an interplanetary delivery to send it back to her.

Wandering the streets later, she catches what looks like her brother and Li Xiang together, happy, playful, in love. The couple kiss and itโ€™s a lovely bit of closure suggesting they found each other again in the afterlife. As she looks on, she thinks sheโ€™s spotted Xie Xinxu in a car parked nearby, only to be mistaken for someone else.

Then her phone rings, telling her to turn around. She does. Xie Xinxu is standing there, smiling. She runs towards him for a kiss and embrace. Pure and uncomplicated happiness.

I’m genuinely glad she never spiralled into despair while he was gone. She seemed to know, deep down, that he was only sleeping, that he’d come back, and even braced herself with real peace for the possibility he might not. No wallowing, no regret-soaked final act. Just a properly earned happy ending.

Affinity Episode Recap 39-40: My Thoughts

What a finale. Director Ding’s full confession is genuinely one of the most layered villain reveals this show’s pulled off, not evil for evil’s sake, but a man who broke himself trying to save one person and lost sight of everyone else in the process. The moment Lin Yu wakes up and talks him back from the edge is the emotional peak for this arc, proof that love, not force, is what actually breaks his cycle.

Xie Xinxu’s sacrifice hit exactly as hard as it needed to, and I loved that the show didn’t drag out a mourning period. It trusted Wu Nongyu, and the audience, to believe he’d come back, and that belief paying perfectly. The helium reveal was somehow both the most grounded and the most absurd explanation possible, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Between the second couple’s afterlife reunion and that final street corner kiss, this ending gave every relationship the show built real, satisfying closure. I’m thrilled that there is an Affinity happy ending. Chaotic, ridiculous, occasionally nonsensical, and somehow one of the most emotionally satisfying watches I’ve had in a long time. Loved every unhinged second of it.
