Road Home Episode 10 Recap
**SPOILER ALERT**
Table of Contents
TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Yanchen dominates a nationwide SWAT competition while Gui Xiao unexpectedly becomes a temporary guardian to Xiaonan, giving both of them a real glimpse into each other’s everyday lives. A quiet trip back to the old billiard hall stirs up real nostalgia, and real tension, before an intruding security guard cuts the moment short.
An Awkward Airport Encounter
At the airport, Gui Xiao spots her father waiting and brings her colleague along to ease the tension. He offers to help her buy an apartment or a new car, and she politely declines, insisting her rented loft and current car suit her just fine. Sensing her discomfort, Duan Rou fakes an urgent call to give her a graceful exit, and once they’re clear, Gui Xiao switches off her phone entirely.
When Duan Rou asks if she’s worried about missing calls from her boyfriend, Gui Xiao explains that Yanchen’s currently barred from any communication given the confidential nature of his SWAT duties, comparing it to her own sister’s similar work, missions, injuries, deployments, all kept under strict silence whenever duty calls.
A Nationwide Police Competition
Meanwhile, Yanchen leads the Third Squadron into a major competition against the Zhangyan SWAT team, a brutal gauntlet including weighted five-kilometre runs, obstacle courses, armoured vehicle driving under simulated attack, tactical shooting, even minority language testing and drone operation.
During the sniper challenge, he hits every single target, drawing genuine admiration from his peers. When a teammate asks why he specifically chose bomb disposal, he answers simply, someone has to take on the most dangerous work.
In a simulated bus bomb scenario modelled after a real case he’d once handled, Yanchen takes the lead per squad tradition, the highest-ranking officer goes first, and manually defuses the device before a teammate sends in the robot to relocate it safely. Watching it unfold, the team reflects on just how unforgiving this line of work really is, one mistake, and there’s no second chance.

A Reason to Return
Mid-competition, Mingyu calls to explain Xiaonan’s household registration is still stuck back home, complicating the school transfer further. During the same call, Yanchen learns his transfer paperwork isn’t actually finalized yet, and new leads have surfaced on an old case he once worked.
He’s urged to return to Qining to help close it out, with Mingyu hinting, not so subtly, that someone else there might be worth seeing too. Yanchen requests leave immediately.
An Unexpected Guardian
Back in Beijing, Gui Xiao gets a call from Xiaonan’s teacher, alarmed that the boy’s been left waiting alone outside school because Hai Dong got stuck in traffic. She picks him up herself, and learning just how much Hai Dong’s been struggling between early morning commutes and helping with English homework, offers to let Xiaonan stay with her for the week instead.
At her place, Xiaonan curiously asks about her and her colleague Duan Rou’s work, and Gui Xiao walks him through her investment reports patiently, mentioning fondly that her own mother always took her questions seriously growing up too.
Later, Duan Rou reveals that Xiaonan quietly admitted he’s scared to use the bathroom alone at night in such a big, unfamiliar house, so she offers to sleep in his room and keep the light on for him.
A Case of Mistaken Identity
The next morning, Mingyu calls to check on his son, surprised when Duan Rou answers instead, and once he realizes Xiaonan’s actually staying with Gui Xiao, he calls Yanchen directly, urging him to properly thank her with a meal.
Yanchen drives to her office, but rather than pulling her away from work, she hands over her house keys so Xiaonan can do his homework comfortably instead of waiting around outside.
A Glimpse Into Her Life
Yanchen brings Xiaonan to Gui Xiao’s apartment, and the boy immediately starts playing host, offering drinks like he owns the place, until Yanchen sternly sends him back to his desk, warning him not to touch anything that isn’t his.
Coming home later with takeout, Gui Xiao finds Yanchen fast asleep on the couch, and the moment he hears her, he’s up instantly, heating up dinner. She hands over Xiaonan’s neatly organized homework checklist, and as they say their goodbyes, Yanchen mentions he has the weekend free and invites her to travel back with him, offering to let her stay with Xiaoshan while they catch up. Thrilled, she asks for ten minutes to grab her things.

A Father’s Interruption
Back at the repair shop, they find Yanchen’s father there, drunk and shouting outside. Protecting her from the confrontation entirely, Yanchen drives her away immediately. Gui Xiao admits, quietly, that she still remembers the sound of his father’s voice from years ago, the same one that once tried to break down a locked door.
A Detour, and Old Memories
Feeling apologetic about the ruined weekend plans, Yanchen listens as Gui Xiao teasingly calls him thoroughly unromantic for always somehow ending up bringing her to repair shops. He takes her instead to Qin Feng’s billiard club, using a key he’d been given to adjust the building’s surveillance cameras.
Inside, old memories come rushing back, he points out the exact window seat where he used to sit just to watch her walk by all those years ago. They talk through their string of old breakups, and Yanchen sets the record straight, insisting she was always the one who ended things, every single time, including their graduation day, when classmates teased him about his desk mate.
The atmosphere between them grows intimate, hands finding each other, until a security guard bursts in, suspecting a break-in, and Yanchen quickly identifies himself as a SWAT officer, explaining he’s simply there adjusting the surveillance system on the owner’s behalf.
Road Home Episode 10 Recap: My Thoughts
I’m looking forward to finding out about the distance between Gui Xiao and her father, and why she keeps dismissing him so consistently, I’d love to know exactly what happened there. We also seem to be getting introduced to some sort of old case back in Qining that Yanchen’s decided to revisit, and it’s good the show is bringing in a couple of fresh plot threads to keep things moving and exciting.
I really enjoyed the change of pace here watching the nationwide police competition. He’s extremely convincing as an officer, I should actually look into whether he has any real background in this before playing the role. Watching their training session was a genuinely good break from everything else that’s been happening so far.
Xiao Nan is being shuffled from house to house to house, and this poor boy has such little stability, which in most circumstances would be disruptive for a kid his age. And yet he takes it all in stride, trusting that the adults around him love and care for him regardless.
I do love watching Gui Xiao and Yanchen essentially play parents to him, such an unexpected turn in their relationship, and it’s sweet that they each seem genuinely surprised at what a good parent the other one turns out to be.
This episode also deepens the contrast between Gui Xiao’s independent corporate life and Yanchen’s heavy family responsibilities, and there’s a real ache in watching how much old baggage and external expectations still cling to both of them.
Rather than leaning on loud, explosive melodrama, this episode uses restrained glances, quiet pacing, and unspoken longing to show just how deeply drawn these two mature leads still are to one another. I appreciated the delicate flashbacks woven throughout too, grounding all this present-day tension in the sweetness of their high school and college years.
I’ll admit I considered dropping this show around episode 8, but I’m glad I stuck with it, because I feel like a real turning point is right around the corner now, and I’m genuinely excited to see where it goes.
