Road Home Episode 26 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

A tense scan, a difficult argument about honesty, and a devastating injury Mingyu keeps hidden from Duan Rou mark real strain on both couples this episode. As Yanchen’s pulled into a classified mission with no way to communicate, Gui Xiao’s pregnancy suddenly accelerates, forcing her into early labour completely alone.

A Difficult Morning

Gui Xiao wakes crying, convinced she’d dreamed Yanchen leaving without saying goodbye, only to realize he has already returned to Tianwen City. She heads to work in a daze, and over lunch with Duan Rou, gets a call from her mother-in-law, Lu Zheng wants to formally meet her family. Nervous, she explains her own father isn’t based in Beijing, but arranges a lunch with her mother instead, texting Yanchen beforehand for guidance.

He tells her simply to relax. Walking to the lunch, her own mother offers the exact same advice, and Gui Xiao can’t help pointing out she sounds just like Yanchen. The lunch goes well, and once she texts him the good news, he’s thrilled, one step closer to feeling like a real family.

A Heartbeat Shared

Back for the weekend, Yanchen accompanies her to a prenatal checkup, though men aren’t allowed inside during the scan itself. Strapped in and listening to the baby’s heartbeat, she calls him so he can hear it too, holding the phone close to the monitor. He’s completely overwhelmed, at a loss for words.

A Painful Disagreement

Walking out afterward, they run into her old friend Dr. Xu, and Yanchen’s noticeably cold toward him. The doctor reminds Gui Xiao to take care given some of her existing health issues, and once he’s gone, Yanchen presses her, confused, about what problems he means.

She explains her longstanding anemia and thyroid issues, both things he’d apparently already known about, currently managed with medication. Genuinely angry, he points out they’ve only been married a short time, and she only ever tells him the good things, never the difficult ones. She accuses him of being jealous rather than actually concerned, and walks away.

A Secret Mission Looms

Seven months later, Yanchen’s sent back under the cover story of routine training, though he’s told once he arrives, he’ll actually be assigned a classified mission of unknown length, likely meaning he’ll miss the baby’s birth entirely.

A Bomb, and an Injury

A bomb’s discovered at a recycling centre, and Mingyu suits up to handle the detonation himself. Chaos breaks out simultaneously when frustrated locals breach the restricted perimeter, desperate to retrieve their impounded cars, and Yanchen’s pulled away managing the crowd.

Mingyu triggers the detonator, but it goes off before he can clear the area, injuring him badly enough to require surgery, a plate inserted in his leg, both hands hurt. He’ll recover fully, but neither he nor Yanchen tells the women anything, unwilling to worry them.

A Growing Suspicion

Over the following days, Duan Rou grows visibly distracted at work, confused by how many calls Mingyu and his son have suddenly been making, and questioning why he apparently has so much unexplained time off. She tries calling him directly, and since his injured hands prevent him answering.

A nurse calls back on his behalf instead, Mingyu insisting everything’s fine, just some paperwork and free time before returning to duty. She hangs up, unconvinced but unable to press further. Yanchen visits him in the hospital, and the doctor reassures them he should be discharged within the week.

A Mission Begins

Yanchen’s own secret mission finally begins, and he texts Gui Xiao warning she might not hear from him for several days, asking her to keep texting normally regardless. She agrees she’s fine, but the moment the call ends, an unsettling wave of worry hits her out of nowhere.

A Sudden Turn

Feeling dizzy ahead of a scheduled blood test requiring a fast, she heads to the hospital, and flinches unexpectedly the moment the needle approaches her arm, unsure herself why, assuming it’s simply hunger. At that exact moment, Yanchen’s secret mission officially gets underway.

An Early Labour

Her usual obstetrician’s unexpectedly in surgery, so she’s reassigned to Dr. Xu. They laugh that they tried so hard for him not to be his assigned doctor due to their friendship only for it to happen by sheer circumstance anyway. He reviews her results and tells her that she needs to go into labour that same night. Nervous and completely alone, she arranges for Xiaonan to stay with Hai Dong for a couple of weeks and checks herself into the hospital.

A Suspicious Man

Meanwhile, Yanchen and his team begin their mission at the train station, patrolling the platform, and he spots a suspicious man carrying a briefcase.

Road Home Episode 26 Recap: My Thoughts

I wasn’t sure if the drama was actually going to see this pregnancy through to the end, so I was pleasantly surprised by that seven-month time jump. It looks like the writers have layered in some stressful scenes though, watching Gui Xiao worried for the first time as her labour, Yanchen’s secret mission, and Mingyu’s injury all seem to collide at once, and the tension really builds because of it.

There’s such a lovely scene too where Gui Xiao’s trying to reassure Yanchen that her health issues are manageable, and he does this small thing where he knocks his chin gently against her forehead, clearly still frustrated with her but wanting her to know he loves her regardless. That gesture felt so natural and unscripted, like watching two real people rather than actors.

Facing a possible early delivery without her husband there is hard, and I think she’s handling it so well, refusing to let herself make him feel guilty about it since there’s nothing either of them can actually do, and she trusts she’s in good hands regardless. I’m really hoping everything goes smoothly next episode, no one dies, no one else gets hurt, and the baby’s healthy, because I’m not sure I could handle it otherwise.

I also appreciate how well this episode balances the heavy reality of Yanchen’s dangerous job against the enduring, tender bond he shares with Gui Xiao. Their communication continues to feel mature, and their decade-long history gives even the quietest moments between them real weight, every glance carrying the full history of their first love and everything it took to find their way back to each other.
