TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A letter that will never be sent becomes the framing device for a deep dive into exactly how Yanchen and Gui Xiao fell for each other in high school, from a choked-on drink to a stolen hand outside a hospital. This episode closes the loop on their origin story, revealing the quiet devotion that shaped everything that came after.
A Letter With Nowhere to Go
Back in 2020, in the same Qining restaurant where his farewell dinner once played out, Yanchen sits alone on a snowy night after Gui Xiao’s driven away. Finding paper and a pen behind the counter, he starts writing her a letter he already knows he’ll never send, much like the ones he’d written in years past when he had no address for her, or simply assumed she’d moved on and married someone else. It isn’t really about sending anything. It’s just a way to talk to her, even with no one listening.
Reflecting on it now, he realizes the breakup that once devastated him has softened considerably with time, leaving behind mostly fondness rather than pain. His mind drifts all the way back to 2008, when he first heard her name from his cousin, Huang Ting, who introduced them not long after under a tree on the school grounds. Trying to seem composed, Gui Xiao promptly choked on her drink and dissolved into an awkward coughing fit.
Small, Quiet Devotion
From that point on, he couldn’t look away. Whenever her class ran laps or crossed the sports court, his eyes found her automatically, and he even joined a pickup basketball game purely to show off in front of her.
When a group of older boys cornered her on her bike ride home one afternoon, he turned around without hesitation and rode her the rest of the way, scaring them off in the process. The next morning, rumours spread about a fight and several seniors called to the office, and a worried Gui Xiao rushed upstairs, relieved to spot him standing there completely unharmed.
He kept finding small ways to show he cared. He’d buy extra drinks for Huang Ting and deliberately leave one within Gui Xiao’s reach. Hearing that the girls were eating unsanitary food from the stalls outside school, he spent an evening cooking a full spread of dishes, packing enough for both of them. She was thoroughly impressed by his cooking, though her mood dropped fast when Huang Ting mentioned he’d applied to a police academy outside Beijing.

A Father’s Cruelty
Everything came to a head during exam season. His father, who’d despised the police force ever since Yanchen’s stepfather died in the line of duty, exploded at the idea of his son following the same path, locking him inside the house and forcing him to miss the exam entirely.
Rather than transfer schools and risk losing all contact with Gui Xiao, Yanchen chose to repeat his final year instead, ensuring they’d end up in the same graduating class after all. Not long after, running into her and Huang Ting at the pool hall, she was secretly delighted to learn he was staying behind.
A Badge, and a Test Paper
The following year, after tending to his drunk father one morning, Yanchen showed up late to school without his uniform and got sent to the teacher’s office. Gui Xiao happened to walk in dropping off assignments and quietly slipped him a spare school badge, enough to smooth things over with the teacher.
Seizing the moment, he offered her his high-scoring math paper to study from, and when he returned it, told her he’d already arranged for an ice cream waiting for her at the corner shop, hers to claim whenever she wanted after class. She tucked the test paper away carefully in her notebook, his handwritten note of thanks still attached.
On the day of their final exams, they exchanged silent words of encouragement before walking into the hall separately. Both did well, and Yanchen’s acceptance letter to the police academy arrived not long after.
A Hand Offered
When Hai Dong mentioned Gui Xiao might move back in with her parents now that school was ending, panic set in fast. Yanchen was at the hospital that day with his grandmother, and had Huang Ting call Gui Xiao specifically, making sure she knew it was Yanchen who wanted to see her. She changed quickly and rushed over.
Walking out of the hospital together afterward, he asked her plainly whether she liked him. Caught off guard, she fumbled for an answer, and he simply turned around, hand held out behind his back, asking her to take it. Shyly, she did. That night, they stayed up talking on the phone for hours, the way any new couple would, already planning to meet again the next day, even with his move to the academy looming over them.

A Choice Made in the Present
Back in the Qining restaurant, a friend notices Yanchen looks troubled after Gui Xiao’s departure and asks whether he’s actually told his family about the transfer order home yet. He admits he’s been putting it off, weighed down by things too complicated to easily explain. But somewhere underneath the hesitation, he already knows exactly what the right choice is.
Road Home Episode 30 Recap: My Thoughts
This episode essentially retells the story of how they met and fell in love, and it’s interesting seeing it framed this way, filling in a lot of gaps we hadn’t gotten before. We learn Yanchen’s been writing letters to Gui Xiao all these years, even after their breakup, never sending a single one because he had no address, or because they simply weren’t together anymore, but it was still his way of talking to her. He writes one in 2020, the night of his farewell, the night she drives away, and it pulls us all the way back to the very beginning of how they met.
It’s an interesting choice to end the series this way, and I understand wanting to fill in the remaining holes across the whole story. That said, I probably would have liked at least half this episode brought back to the present day.
We did get all the happy endings already in episode 29, so it’s not like the show shortchanged us there, but dedicating an entire episode purely to the past felt like a bit much. It might have worked better swapped, the wedding as episode 29, this retrospective saved for episode 30 instead, or vice versa in some blended order.
It wasn’t an especially exciting finale, and it didn’t leave me particularly swoon-worthy either. But it does conclusively close out their love story properly. I did however love knowing that when he couldnโt decide where he would accept the transfer back to Beijing, it was the chance reunion with Gui Xiao that re-ignited his feelings for her and he had quietly already made up his mind.
