Road Home Episode 9 Recap

TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A carefully engineered day alone together nearly gives us a real kiss, twice, but Xiaonan’s timing remains impeccably bad. Between a painful family history revealed, a rooftop moment under the stars, and Yanchen preparing to disappear on another dangerous mission, this episode is all quiet devotion wrapped around real vulnerability.
A Convenient Fishing Trip
On the way home, the shop mechanics ask if anyone wants to go fishing, and Yanchen declines at first, only to reconsider and send Xiaonan along with them instead, insisting a young man needs the exercise.
It’s a transparent excuse to get the boy out of the house before Gui Xiao arrives, and Yanchen wastes no time cleaning his room and changing into fresh, all-black clothes, waiting outside in the cold for half an hour until she pulls up.
A Car Inspection, and an Invitation Inside
The moment she arrives, he tells her to get out so he can take her car into the shop, rattling off a long list of things that need fixing, tire pressure, alignment, valves, promising to handle it all properly later. Noticing the chill in the garage bay, he brings her inside his room instead.
She spots the same old stacks of papers on his desk and reminisces about their mimeographed math tests from high school. He admits, quietly, that the first time he saw her again at the gas station in Qining, he barely dared believe it was really her, she’d grown into an adult while somehow keeping the exact same face.
He reaches out to touch her hair, and when she pulls him into a warm hug, clearly wanting more, they lean in for a kiss, only for Xiaonan to burst through the door holding up his catch of the day, breaking the moment entirely.

A Tense Visit from His Mother
Noticing Xiaonan’s fish came home without a single vegetable to go with it, Yanchen takes him out to buy groceries. While they’re gone, word reaches his mother that he’s brought a woman to the shop, and she arrives to find Gui Xiao there alone.
Rather than warmth, she offers awkward conversation, quietly changing her son’s bedsheets without a word. Sensing the tension, Gui Xiao excuses herself outside, where the security guard at the gate notices her shivering and invites her into his booth to keep warm, chatting easily once she explains she’s an old middle school classmate of Yanchen’s.
At the market, Yanchen picks out river prawns and specifically selects two large mandarin fish, determined to give Gui Xiao a proper meal. Once his mother finishes with the bedding, she stops by the security booth herself and, somewhat unexpectedly, extends an invitation for Gui Xiao and Xiaonan to come for dinner sometime. Gui Xiao promises politely to pass the message along.
A Disruption
When Yanchen returns and finds her still in the booth, he worries his mother made her feel unwelcome, but she reassures him it’s fine. Their conversation is cut short by angry customers causing a scene inside the shop, and he steps away to sort it out, leaving her waiting.
In her nervous distraction, she accidentally kicks over the bag of fish, spilling everything, and has to wash her hands with hot water the guard provides. Hai Dong shows up right around then, greeting her warmly, and once the dispute inside settles, Yanchen sends him out for cornstarch.
A Message from an Old Friend
On his errand, Hai Dong pauses outside Xiaoshan’s restaurant, and when she steps out asking if he’s there to borrow money again, he explains he’s actually just picking up cornstarch for Yanchen, who’s cooking dinner for Gui Xiao.
Xiaoshan tells him to pass along that she’ll leave her parents’ door unlocked for Gui Xiao that night. He returns with the cornstarch, and Yanchen gets to work on an elaborate squirrel mandarin fish dish, one Gui Xiao adored as a teenager.
A Painful History
While Yanchen’s occupied in the kitchen, Gui Xiao asks Hai Dong about his mother, and he doesn’t hold back, describing how their father’s drunken violence used to fall on Yanchen’s sister especially hard, and how Yanchen would deliberately provoke his father just to redirect the beatings onto himself instead.
Gui Xiao’s genuinely horrified hearing it. When Hai Dong asks outright if she and Yanchen are getting back together, she insists, a little too quickly, that they’re only ordinary friends.
A Drunken Confession
Later that night, a heavily intoxicated Hai Dong needs driving home, and his younger brother Hai Jianfeng comes out to help settle him. In his drunken haze, Hai Dong blurts out that Jianfeng’s had a crush on Gui Xiao since their very first day of middle school, and has kept a photo of her by his bedside ever since graduation.
Mortified, Jianfeng rushes inside to retrieve it, handing it over to Gui Xiao himself. Yanchen studies the photo with a flicker of visible jealousy, while Gui Xiao simply thanks Jianfeng for holding onto it all these years.
A Number Memorized
Driving her back afterward, Yanchen admits that if she hadn’t come looking for him in Qining, he probably wouldn’t have returned to Beijing so soon. She tells him honestly that even without the stolen car, she would have gone looking for him eventually anyway, she’d gotten his number from Huang Ting two years earlier and had it memorized completely, could recite it backward if she had to. He’s clearly moved hearing it.
A Rooftop Under the Stars
At Xiaoshan’s place that night, the two women talk in bed, Gui Xiao noting how little Yanchen resembles his mother, and Xiaoshan gently warning her to tread carefully given how complicated his family situation still is.
Once Xiaoshan drifts off, unable to sleep herself, Gui Xiao steps onto the balcony and texts Yanchen, admitting she regrets leaving so early, wishing they’d had more time to actually talk since he’s been back.
He asks if she wants to see him, and when she says yes, he reveals he never actually left, still parked right outside. Thrilled, she watches him climb onto the roof of his car so they can see each other from her balcony, a small, quietly cinematic moment cut short only when a passerby forces him to finally drive off.

A Question About Her Career
Back at the shop late that night, Xiaonan wakes and Yanchen asks him, almost offhandedly, what exactly Gui Xiao does for work. When Xiaonan doesn’t know, Yanchen tells him to just ask her directly tomorrow, though pressed further, Xiaonan recalls something about alternative energy investment.
A Breakfast Goodbye
The next morning, Xiaoshan wakes Gui Xiao with news that Yanchen’s brought her favourite breakfast from their old school gate. Over the meal, he tells her he has to leave immediately for a classified mission, no calls, no contact, no way to know how long he’ll be gone.
He explains it upfront specifically so she won’t worry, and she takes it in stride completely, understanding fully that this is simply part of who he is.
A Conversation Worth Having
He tells her that once she’s back from her own upcoming trip, they should sit down and actually talk properly, jobs, families, home situations, assets, all the things they never got around to discussing when they were younger and reckless.
Overhearing this from nearby, Xiaoshan chimes in that it’s good they’re planning to have that talk, though if they’re just casually dating, maybe they should keep a little mystery alive to keep things exciting. Gui Xiao shoots her a look sharp enough to end the conversation entirely.
Business as Usual
At the office the next day, Gui Xiao runs her team through a weekly review, coaching two employees on how to navigate a stalemate with a difficult client, teaching them how to adjust contractual clauses without giving away too much ground, and how to stall a decision just long enough to buy real time to react. Heading to the airport for her business trip afterward, her phone rings, her father, already waiting for her at the terminal.
Road Home Episode 9 Recap: My Thoughts
Episode 9 gives us some real, massive progress in their relationship. With the arranged engagement finally resolved, Yanchen’s able to properly go back to pursuing Gui Xiao, and he’s become so much more forthcoming and direct in his actions.
He’s no longer wondering whether she still loves him, he knows, and now he’s actively doing everything right to get this relationship back on track. Gui Xiao is genuinely happy this episode too. She can see real progress in how he’s treating her, and there are so many genuine, wide smiles from her that just light up her whole face.
I’ll admit, up until this point, I wasn’t fully convinced by their on-screen chemistry, though I recognize that’s a somewhat biased take on my part, since I’ve found the female lead fairly ordinary as a character overall. That said, I’m warming to her here, and that’s no slight against the acting itself, sheโs pretty good.
The pace picked up slightly in this episode, and I think that’s tied directly to this progress. The tension between them has finally eased, and they seem to be settling back into their old rhythm together. Yanchen’s facial expressions and body language read so much more relaxed now, and it’s genuinely nice seeing him smile more.
I also felt real relief watching this episode mark the end of the slow burn stretch. After eight episodes of agonizingly slow, melancholic pining, this felt like the reward finally arriving, the shift from painful longing into something closer to real, warm romance.
I appreciated too how the show handled this reconciliation seriously, rather than glossing over the trauma of their decade apart, these two are actually addressing it directly. It’s refreshing watching a couple communicate clearly and choose each other on purpose, instead of leaning on petty, dragged-out misunderstandings to manufacture more drama.
And I loved the shift in Yanchen specifically. He’s kept that same hyper-serious, quiet demeanour that’s defined him from the start, but his body language around Gui Xiao has completely softened. After eight episodes of watching a man look entirely weighed down by life, it’s so good to finally seeing him smile, relax, and lean into something as simple as domestic happiness.
