Road Home Episode 20 Recap
TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Confirmation of the pregnancy, an emotional call to Hai Dong, and a spontaneous marriage registration squeezed into a two-hour flight delay make this one of the most heartwarming episodes yet. Ten years after they first fell for each other, Yanchen and Gui Xiao finally, officially become husband and wife.
A Sleepless Night
Too happy to sleep, Yanchen steps out onto the balcony, and Xiaonan finds him there. Worried the new baby means he’ll be sent back to Qining since the apartment only has so much room, and knowing how long it took Gui Xiao to find this place, the boy admits that’s exactly what’s kept him awake too.
Yanchen shuts the worry down immediately, Qining’s too far, he isn’t going anywhere. Pulling him close, he tells him firmly this is something for the adults to sort out, not something Xiaonan needs to carry.
When the boy admits, a little sheepishly, how much he genuinely likes having Gui Xiao and Duan Rou around, Yanchen teases him for apparently forgetting his own father and uncle in the process, and Xiaonan points out, cheekily, that judging by how happy and distracted he sounds, tinkering with cars and unable to sleep, he doesn’t need to ask how Yanchen’s feeling about any of this.
A Friend Overwhelmed
Downstairs, Yanchen calls Hai Dong, who grumbles about being interrupted right as he was about to sit down with a drink, asking what he wants. When Yanchen jokes about how his mouth ever landed him a girlfriend, Hai Dong corrects him bitterly, he’s single, she dumped him.
Yanchen presses whether that means he’ll simply stay single forever, and Hai Dong admits, probably, every time he hears the word marriage, all he can picture is himself on his knees begging outside Xiaoshan’s house, and now she’s married to someone else entirely.
Asked why he even bothered calling, Yanchen puts a hand on his shoulder and tells him plainly, he’s going to be a father. Hai Dong just stares, completely floored, unable to process it, standing up, sitting down, standing again, asking for a moment to actually digest the news.
He points out, stunned, that they’ve been moving like they’re on a rocket ship, barely back together since Spring Festival, and now married with a baby on the way. Beside himself, he repeats over and over how happy he is for both of them, admitting he’s genuinely relieved that out of all the couples from their school days, at least one of them actually made it.
Then Hai Dong starts crying, reaching to hug Yanchen, who pushes him off, embarrassed, insisting he doesn’t even know why he’s tearing up. Between sniffles, he manages to say he simply can’t believe he’s about to be an uncle, and begs, half-serious, to be named godfather.

A Healthy Confirmation
The next day, Yanchen accompanies Gui Xiao to the gynaecology department for a scan to confirm the pregnancy properly. It’s confirmed. Anxious after reading online about potential complications, she asks the radiologist outright if the baby’s healthy, if it could be ectopic, and the radiologist, gently amused, asks if she’s been doing her own research online, then reassures her everything looks completely normal.
Walking out with the scan in hand, Yanchen’s thrilled, pouring over the details and reading how big the baby currently is, while she laughs at just how tiny that actually sounds.
A Timeline Worth Hoping For
At the obstetrician’s office, she’s told it’s still too early to check for any real complications, though everything looks fine so far, and she’ll need her marriage certificate to formally open her prenatal file. Coming out, she tells Yanchen they estimate she’s five weeks along, and wonders aloud whether the baby was conceived back in Qining or after they returned to Beijing.
He admits it’s hard to say, and questions whether it even matters. It does to her, she’d love nothing more than to say the baby was conceived in Qining, his second home, the place where they found their way back to each other. He tells her, without hesitation, that he thinks it was.
A Line Not Worth Crossing
Gui Xiao visits Xiaoshan at the restaurant to start planning the wedding banquet menu, and asks for her bank details, wanting to repay the money both Hai Dong and Yanchen apparently owe her.
Xiaoshan shuts it down immediately, that’s a matter strictly between her and Hai Dong, not something Gui Xiao should get involved in, and pointing out that Yanchen would hardly be pleased if she handled it behind his back. Gui Xiao drops the subject.
An Unwelcome Assignment
At work the next day, Yanchen’s called in to meet Mr. Shen, the explosives expert, who’s come to Tianwen specifically to ask if Yanchen can lead training for the bomb squad in the newly formed city unit.
Confused, Yanchen points out he thought Mingyu was handling that, and learns Qining’s simply too short-staffed to spare him, while Tianwen has enough coverage to let Yanchen go instead. Departing the next day, for a full month. Closing the door afterward, he can’t help thinking the timing couldn’t possibly be worse.
A Free Apprenticeship
Back at the apartment parking lot, the security guard greets him warmly, proud to report he’s remembered everything Yanchen taught him and has been practicing diligently. Yanchen hands over contact details for his own repair shop, telling him to mention he’s Yanchen’s apprentice and he’ll be taught anything he wants completely free of charge. The guard hesitates, insisting that isn’t appropriate, but Yanchen brushes the objection aside.
A Goodbye, and a Promise
That evening, Yanchen comes home unannounced and cooks dinner, encouraging Gui Xiao to keep drinking milk for the calcium. He breaks the news of his month-long trip, and though clearly disappointed, she takes it in stride, simply asking for a two-minute hug instead.
A Delay, and a Decision
The next morning, after a teasing goodbye, admitting it’s hard for him to leave, Yanchen’s picked up by Mr. Shen for the airport. En route, they learn the flight’s delayed two hours. On the drive, he calls Gui Xiao, and when she assumes he’s already at the airport, he tells her instead to get changed, he’s coming to take her somewhere.
Confused, she asks what they’re doing, and he explains the marriage registration office opens at eight-thirty, and they can register today. Now? she asks. Yes, he confirms, and they head straight there.
A Line Cut Short
Nervous at the office, which happens to be exactly where her aunt works, Gui Xiao runs into her cousin, who assumes she’s there about her parents’ pending divorce, wondering aloud if the SWAT officer beside her is there to help calm things down.
She corrects him quickly, she’s actually there to get married. Realizing the line ahead might make Yanchen miss his flight, her cousin steps in, and once he explains to the couples waiting that Yanchen’s a SWAT officer about to leave on an urgent mission, they happily swap numbers so the couple can go first.
Married, Finally
They take their waiting photos, skip the optional medical checkup, and register their marriage. While the paperwork processes, they think back to when they first met in school, the day they agreed to become a real couple, and now, finally, officially husband and wife.

Road Home Episode 20 Recap: My Thoughts
When Yanchen was so happy he couldn’t sleep and Xiao Nan came looking for him, my first thought was, oh gosh, this poor kid is probably lying awake thinking he doesn’t have a place to stay anymore. I’m so glad they wrote that little scene reassuring him, because that’s such a genuine fear for a child in his position.
The opening scene where Yanchen tells Hai Dong he’s going to be a dad made me laugh and cry in equal measure. I loved that he chose to share the news with his best friend first, and Hai Dong’s absolute shock felt so real. He wasn’t wrong pointing out that these two have essentially been on a rocket ship, from not even speaking, to reuniting at Spring Festival, to marriage, and now a baby, all in the blink of an eye.
Watching him stand up, sit down, stand back up again, asking for a moment to digest it all, then repeating over and over how happy he is for both of them, felt genuinely unscripted, whether that’s brilliant writing or the actor was simply given room to ad-lib.
And when he started crying, admitting he didn’t even know why, calling himself embarrassing while clearly overjoyed for his friend, I cried right along with him. Such a beautifully written moment, funny and full of real love between them.
I also really loved how Gui Xiao didn’t make a fuss over Yanchen having to leave for a month during her first trimester. That’s such a great sign of maturity and trust. She’s clearly not thrilled to see him go, but she understands this is simply who he is, it’s in his blood, and instead of arguing, she just smiles and asks for a two-minute hug.
This episode moved us from Yanchen tearfully sharing his happiness with his best friend, through pregnancy confirmation, all the way to marriage, all in one sitting. It closes out this middle stretch of the drama on such a high note, and with ten episodes still left, I’m curious where the story goes from here.
I’m also really coming to appreciate Gui Xiao as a character. Watching her, I don’t feel like I’m watching a performance, her giggling, her hugs, her playfulness, it all reads so naturally rather than acted. The actress has done such a wonderful job here, it barely feels like I’m watching a scripted show at all.
That official wedding photo sequence was such a satisfying payoff too, after watching these two survive an entire decade apart, seeing them finally in formal wedding attire together landed beautifully.
And I loved that they didn’t let typical drama clichรฉs slow them down, no last-minute obstacles, no manufactured delays, just two confident adults walking straight into their marriage registration and solidifying their commitment on the spot.
