Road Home Episode 24 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Grief and quiet dignity define Yanchen’s final days in Gaihong, escorting Mr. Shen’s body home while genuine camaraderie and a surprising olive branch from Gui Xiao’s father round out this transitional episode. Between hospital visits, competitive shooting, and old friends offering real comfort, this episode balances mourning with warmth.

A Meal Shared, From a Distance

Over lunch, Yanchen tells Gui Xiao he’s eating beef noodles, and she tells him to set the phone down and just eat, wanting to hear him do it since she can’t see him. When she asks when he’s coming home, he surprises her with news he’s arriving two days earlier than planned, though he can’t explain why just yet. She agrees to simply wait for him.

A Farewell Declined

Reporting to his superior, Yanchen learns the mission’s officially concluded following the accident, and since he’s already been away over a month, Tianwen’s requesting he return. His superior offers to throw a proper farewell party, but Yanchen declines, explaining Mr. Shen has no children of his own, so he intends to personally escort the body back to Beijing instead. His superior agrees, understanding completely.

Back at the dorm, he finds a colleague crying quietly on his bunk and gently wipes away his tears, telling him there’s no need for embarrassment. The colleague admits he’d been thinking about the old captain too, and when Yanchen mentions his plan to escort Mr. Shen home, the colleague agrees it’s exactly the right thing to do, a man who dedicated his entire life to serving the country.

A Family Left in the Dark

Meeting her mother, Gui Xiao’s asked whether she’s heard from her father, and admits she hasn’t, nor has she told him about the pregnancy yet. Her mother asks about Yanchen’s family too, and Gui Xiao explains his mother knows, though his father doesn’t, adding that his father doesn’t seem to care regardless. Besides, Yanchen isn’t even in Beijing most of the time.

A Sudden Need

A call comes in from Yanchen’s sister, his mother’s been hospitalized, and with her own husband away on business and Hai Dong unreachable, she needs to rush home to look after her kids instead. Gui Xiao immediately offers to step in, reassuring her it’s no trouble at all.

Lu Tongtong instinctively reaches out to take Gui Xiaoโ€™s hand in gratitude but pulls back out of shyness. Having none of it, Gui Xiao smiles warmly and simply takes her hand and insists she’ll look after their mother properly, especially with her own mother there to help.

Two Mothers, Talking Honestly

At the hospital, Gong Lin, Yanchen’s mother, is peeling fruit when Shen Jin, Gui Xiao’s mother, joins her, gently pointing out that fresh fruit’s become expensive lately and Gong Lin rarely gets to enjoy it. Shen Jin insists she simply ask Gui Xiao next time she wants some.

Ordering lunch together, Gong Lin admits she likes spicy food, though she never actually eats it since her husband Lu Zheng doesn’t care for it. Shen Jin asks, pointedly, why she feels the need to compromise on everything, and Gong Lin has no real answer, quietly ordering the meal anyway. They share it together regardless.

A Quiet Return

Before officially leaving Gaihong, Yanchen decides to stop by the station one more time just to see everyone. When Mingyu asks why he’s really come back, Yanchen doesn’t answer directly, and Mingyu decides not to press further.

A Gentle Truth

Back at the hospital, Gui Xiao sits with Gong Lin, gently pointing out that based on how put-together her mother always looks, she’d assumed theirs was a genuinely happy family. Gong Lin corrects her honestly, her parents actually divorced, and once her mother made that decision, it was final, she never once asked for money afterward, choosing instead to build a full life of her own. The story seems to leave Gong Lin thinking, perhaps even quietly emboldened by it.

A Shooting Range, and a Real Analysis

Back at the station, Yanchen’s offered the afternoon off, and he chooses the shooting range instead. He and Mingyu compete on separate targets, and given Yanchen’s clear seniority and skill, he wins decisively, thirty-two rounds to spare.

Zhong brings the dogs to watch, and afterward remarks that it’s unusual for the two captains to run extra training on their own, especially given how much Yanchen always preaches proper work-life balance during downtime. Yanchen admits it’s a sharp read.

Later, over barbecue, Yanchen quietly tells Commissioner Du that heโ€™s gotten married and is expecting a child, asking him not to share it with the rest of the team just yet, given how inappropriate it would feel to celebrate so soon after losing Mr. Shen.

A Night Among Brothers

That night, the four of them head back to the small shared apartment near the station, one they’d all personally renovated and painted years earlier as single men, a home away from home built on real camaraderie. In high spirits, they tease Mingyu about an old crush on a fellow officer, so consuming at the time that he’d once absentmindedly tried using a steamed bun as his computer mouse.

A Final Escort

Yanchen personally escorts Mr. Shen’s body back to Beijing, seeing every last detail through before reporting back to close things out. On his way out, Gui Xiao’s father approaches him directly, remarking he’s glad it was Yanchen specifically who handled Mr. Shen’s escort.

He reveals he already knows about the marriage, and Yanchen admits, guiltily, he’d wanted to properly pay respects to her family sooner but simply ran out of time given everything happening. Her father tells him plainly that now that he’s married, he needs to be more careful on future missions, then offers his own driver to take him home. Yanchen declines, insisting he wants to walk. It’s a quiet, meaningful moment, her father finally, fully accepting the marriage.

Home, Finally

Arriving back at the apartment, Yanchen finds Gui Xiao’s already stocked everything he needs to cook dinner, waiting for him.

Road Home Episode 24 Recap: My Thoughts

This episode focuses on two main themes. Firstly, it’s all about family. We see Gui Xiao meeting Yanchen’s sister and reconnecting with his mother, two women with polarizing views on marriage still finding ways to be caring toward one another.

Yanchen’s mother seems to have a quiet epiphany here too, realizing what it might actually look like to be free of a marriage she’s stayed trapped in. And that scene where Yanchen runs into Gui Xiao’s father gave us a real window into acceptance, watching him finally set aside his old objections was such a relieving moment, especially as he gently advises Yanchen to be more careful on missions now that he has a family to think about.

The second half of this episode is really about grief, and the brotherhood among the men at the station. Watching that scene with the four of them just sitting around, chatting, teasing each other, felt so real, nothing polished or performative about it, just simple, raw camaraderie. I really enjoyed how honest that felt.

The shift back to domestic intimacy once Yanchen finally comes home was such a needed break from all the grief too, Gui Xiao practically throwing herself at him, playfully trying to follow him into the shower, exactly the kind of warmth this episode needed after everything with Mr. Shen.

And I continue to respect how firmly Yanchen protects Gui Xiao from his toxic family, refusing to let her anywhere near his childhood home despite his mother’s illness, determined she never has to face his father’s cruelty firsthand.
