Road Home Episode 17 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

A secretly purchased engagement ring, a genuine confession of regret, and two passionate kisses mark real, tender progress this episode. Between family complications finally coming to light and a wise word from an unexpected source about pride having no place in a marriage, Yanchen and Gui Xiao inch closer to the wedding they both clearly want.

A Text, and a Boundary Set

Making more dumplings for dinner while asking Duan Rou to check on Xiaonan’s homework, Gui Xiao gets a text from Yanchen explaining he’s tied up in Tianwen and won’t be back until next week. She sends back a simple “got it,” adding that while he doesn’t need to keep coming back and forth, they absolutely need to communicate every single day regardless. He agrees, sending the same reply back.

A Formal Report

At the detachment, Yanchen submits his usual reports, then informs his superior he’s getting married. Surprised, given Yanchen’s quiet, solitary reputation, his leader admits he hadn’t even realized he had a girlfriend, and offers genuine congratulations.

A Goodbye Left Unsaid

Back in the dorm grading papers, Yanchen fends off his deputy’s endless questions, eager to finish so he can call his fiancรฉe before she sleeps, earning himself a stern look for the interrogation. Their call turns into small talk, and she notes, almost reflexively, that he still hasn’t said much, that he hasn’t changed, catching herself before turning it into a real complaint.

Rushing off to a meeting, she hangs up without saying goodbye, and both of them feel the sting of it, though neither mentions it out loud.

Overthinking, on Both Sides

Her boss steps out afterward asking why she’s been avoiding him, and she’s genuinely surprised by the accusation, insisting she hasn’t. Duan Rou, curious, asks if she’d ever have considered him instead if Yanchen weren’t in the picture, given how long he’s carried a crush on her.

Gui Xiao admits she’s never once thought about it, then asks if Duan Rou thinks Yanchen would actually overanalyse something as small as a missed goodbye. Duan Rou brushes it off, he’s a SWAT captain, why would he waste time on that?

Except he does. Back at the dorm, visibly unhappy, his deputy guesses correctly that something’s wrong between him and his girlfriend, and once Yanchen admits she didn’t say goodbye, the deputy declares confidently, in his limited relationship experience, that’s a hundred percent anger.

Yanchen calls her back immediately, and she’s surprised, wondering what’s up. He brings up the wedding, wanting to visit her parents that weekend, and though she hesitates, mentioning a possible overtime conflict, they make sure to properly say goodbye this time before hanging up, both of them clearly relieved.

The Truth About Their Breakup, Again

Pressed further by his deputy about why they originally broke up, Yanchen finally lays it out honestly, they were young, she was overwhelmed and emotional at the time, and when she wanted to end things, he agreed out of pure anger rather than actually wanting it.

He only learned afterward, through her cousin, that her parents were going through a brutal divorce, and neither of them knew how to handle any of it properly. Pride played its own part too, on both sides.

His deputy offers a piece of wisdom that clearly lands, pride is for opponents, not family, a lesson he credits entirely to his own mother’s high emotional intelligence, the real reason his own childhood turned out happy. If Yanchen wants a successful marriage, he jokes, dinner with his mother might be the best education available. It’s the first time we’ve genuinely seen this deputy make Yanchen laugh.

A Family Revealed

Meanwhile, Gui Xiao visits Xiaoshan, and Xiaoshan, initially assuming she’s rushing the wedding because she’s pregnant, warns her seriously to think through what she’s signing up for, given how complicated Yanchen’s family situation really is.

Qin Feng pushes back, defending Yanchen as a fundamentally good man, though Xiaoshan reveals something Gui Xiao didn’t know, a half-sister from his mother’s side, a half-brother from his father’s, the product of both parents’ earlier remarriages.

Rather than discouraging her, learning it only deepens Gui Xiao’s sympathy, and strengthens her resolve to finally give him the normal, stable family he’s never had. Realizing it’s actually Saturday, not Friday, she rushes home to see him.

Her Father’s Approval, Withheld

At the station, Yanchen unexpectedly runs into Gui Xiao’s father, and his superior mentions the two men are actually old classmates, prompting a handshake between them. In a private conversation, her father reiterates that this line of work simply isn’t suited to marriage, and Yanchen promises he’ll prove, over time, that it is exactly the right decision, and he intends to see it through to the end.

His superior later reveals something new, that Gui Xiao’s father was injured on duty years ago and forced to change professions, now working in anti-bomb equipment development instead. He assigns Yanchen to lead training for the Fourth Brigade, a month away from home, and advises him plainly to explain the reality of that schedule to Gui Xiao honestly if she’s going to become a police officer’s wife.

Yanchen takes the advice to heart, understanding that managing expectations openly is the only way this relationship actually survives long-term.

A Reunion and a Kiss

Coming home to find Gui Xiao waiting at the door for half an hour, Yanchen barely gets through it before she pulls him upstairs for a shower, undressing him while showering him with compliments about how handsome and fit he is, which he clearly enjoys.

When he jokes he’ll get old eventually, she tells him she’d better appreciate the view now, then asks how many days it’s actually been since she last saw him, an answer he insists she can’t even count anymore. He kisses her deeply.

He admits he missed her, and she teases him for suddenly becoming such a smooth talker, prompting him to admit he’s simply trying to learn to say more. They keep kissing and talking in the same breath.

Old Memories, New Purpose

They head out to Burger King, recreating the exact meal he once bought her back in college, admitting at the time it was all he could afford given how much he was supporting his half-sister financially. She’s the sibling he’s closest to, and now that he’s marrying Gui Xiao, he wants the two of them to finally meet.

A Ring, Delivered by Kiss

Walking afterward, Gui Xiao playfully begs for a kiss in public, and despite his protest about propriety, wondering if she’s being shameless, she doesn’t care and keeps asking until he finally gives in, insisting it’s just this once. Midway through, he pulls back, confused, an engagement ring somehow now in his mouth. She giggles with delight.

He’s less thrilled realizing she’d secretly bought her own ring, and refuses to tell him how much it cost. She explains she wants everything done properly, so no one ever looks down on him, fully aware he can’t currently afford one himself, and she refuses to let petty materialism become gossip fuel for anyone.

He insists he could afford it. She clarifies she doesn’t even want a showy wedding, she simply wants to marry him. He relents, slides the ring onto her finger himself, hugs her, and kisses her forehead as she cries from pure happiness. He promises to buy her a bigger one eventually.

A Real Apology

That night in bed, she finally apologizes properly for ending things all those years ago, admitting real regret. Meeting him, she confesses, permanently changed her taste in men, quiet types with striking eyes who could fix cars, men who talk too much genuinely irritate her now.

He proposes marrying within the month. She offers to buy them a house, and when he insists, he’ll handle it, she points out she already has the money, prompting him to tell her, half-serious, that she should buy it before the wedding specifically so the asset legally remains hers alone, a detail that genuinely impresses her, she hadn’t expected him to know anything about marriage law.

A Garage, and an Apprentice

Later that night, Yanchen sneaks out under the excuse of getting water, heading to the garage to tinker with her car instead. The security guard asks why he always seems to be fixing something, and Yanchen explains there are only ever two reasons, happiness or unhappiness, tonight, happily, it’s the former.

When the guard admits he’d love to learn the trade himself but can’t afford to work as an unpaid apprentice given his responsibilities as a breadwinner, Yanchen agrees to teach him anyway, free of charge.

Road Home Episode 17 Recap: My Thoughts

This whole episode is about the couple growing up, especially Yanchen. For someone who doesn’t talk much, he’s learning to communicate and be more open about everything, because he clearly understands the only way this actually works is by managing expectations properly. Gui Xiao is being so much more understanding too, and doesn’t make him feel guilty for constantly being away.

Viewers heavily praised this shift in communication, and I agree, instead of falling back into old, silent habits, Gui Xiao directly tells him they need to talk every single day to actively maintain the relationship, which feels like such a breath of fresh air for a cdrama couple. That marriage report scene at his detachment also had me cheering, his absolute certainty declaring he’s marrying the girl he grew up with says so much about how done he is letting outside pressure dictate his life.

We get two kisses in this episode! These two are really leaning into their romance now. The bathroom scene, her unbuttoning his shirt, telling him how muscular and handsome he looks, was such a great reversal. Dramas always have the man complimenting the woman’s beauty, but rarely enough of the reverse. Their kiss there was genuinely sexy and passionate.

The kiss with the ring hidden inside was wonderful too. He seemed annoyed at first that she’d bought her own engagement ring, but he accepted her reasoning once he understood how much she genuinely cares about protecting his pride. That’s such a mature outlook from both of them, and it’s fantastic to watch play out.

Her expressing genuine regret, wrapped in so much love for him, was another great beat. I love that it’s her owning up to her own mistakes again, doing everything she can to make sure he knows exactly how much she loves him.

When he tells her he has to leave for a month, I loved the line about her being willing to share half her husband with the country. Serving your country is never just about one person, it ripples out and affects the entire family around them too.
