Road Home Episode 27 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Devastating news pulls Gui Xiao into labour and Yanchen’s hospital room simultaneously, forcing her through childbirth while fearing for her husband’s life. Told through the lens of a genuinely harrowing crisis, this episode delivers both heartbreak and hard-won relief, punctuated by tender flashbacks tracing exactly how deep this couple’s history really runs.

Devastating News

Gui Xiao’s father arrives at her hospital room with terrible news, Yanchen’s been in an accident and is currently in surgery, unconscious, and he’s come to take her to see him if she wants. She’s beside herself, overwhelmed with tears. Gui Yanshan arranges everything and also has Dr Xu come with them in case Gui Xiao goes into labour.

A Race Against Time

The next day, they fly to Qining, and contractions begin in the car ride over. Once at the hospital, she’s rushed into a gown and brought straight to see Yanchen, still unconscious after surgery, not yet out of danger. Utterly destroyed, she cries beside him, repeating that she’s here, that he needs to hear her, all while contractions continue building.

Dr Xu urges her to leave Yanshenโ€™s bedside but she refuses. She knows that he can hear her and continues to tell him that he has to live. She finally canโ€™t take the pain anymore and leaves.

A Doctor Fighting for Access

As she’s moved to the delivery room, her father waits anxiously outside. Dr. Xu Yao, her presiding obstetrician, requests special hospital permission to accompany her into delivery given his full knowledge of her medical history.

When a nurse initially refuses, citing protocol, he explains the extenuating circumstances, her husband, a civil servant, currently hospitalized in the very same building, and they agree to check with the attending doctor.

A Mother’s Concern

Her father calls Shen Jin, who’s returned overseas, to explain what’s happening, and she’s immediately upset he didn’t call sooner. He reassures her everything happened suddenly, only the day before, and she tells him not to panic, labour can take time, urging him to eat something and stay grounded.

He admits, almost amused despite everything, that she was the very first person he thought to call, and she reminds him simply, of course, she’s the mother. Confident in Dr. Xu’s care, she assures him Gui Xiao will be fine, she’s always been the strong one.

A Healthy Arrival

Still mid-contraction, Gui Xiao keeps asking about Yanchen, still unconscious. She goes into labour and delivers a healthy baby girl, and her father is overjoyed. Resting afterward, she wakes to find her daughter beside her, healthy and content, and she’s overwhelmed with happiness, though her first question remains the same, has Yanchen woken up yet. He hasnโ€™t and Dr Xu reassures her that the moment he is awake, he will come and get Gui Xiao.

A Reunion, At Last

Later, Dr. Xu Yao rushes in with the news, he’s awake. Wheeled to his room, she finds him lying there, still weak, and their reunion is overwhelming, he cries at the sight of her. He asks if she’s crying because labour hurt so much, and she admits it did, launching into an exhausted, teary, smiling account of the whole ordeal, while he drifts in and out of consciousness, still heavy with anaesthesia.

Memories, Resurfacing

Back in her room resting, Gui Xiao’s mind drifts through their shared history. Back in 2009, him sneaking her out for a secret date. In 2010, returning home and rushing to the garage just to find him waiting, thrilled the moment he sees her.

And in 2011, a devastating four-month stretch of near-silence, her breaking down on the phone from missing him so badly, only for him to reveal he wouldn’t be back for another three months, the fight escalating until she’d warned him plainly, if he hangs up now, don’t bother calling back.

Road Home Episode 27 Recap: My Thoughts

I knew something bad was coming. We’re in episode 27, and I figured eventually we’d have to deal with an accident of some kind, Yanchen getting hurt, and thankfully it only spanned about three quarters of an episode of pure angst, I’m not sure I could’ve handled three full episodes of that. Seeing Gui Xiao’s father break the news, and watching Yanchen comatose, hooked up to oxygen, hit hard.

I loved her father’s involvement here too, how he made sure she got to see him in time, and I think, as she’s said before, they’re always fated to find their way back together. They end up giving birth in the very same hospital where he was fighting for his life felt like such a beautifully fitting arc, especially symbolic that their little family of three ends up united in the exact border town where this whole journey back to each other first began.

That scene of Gui Xiao crying in grief while mid-contraction was so well done, such believable acting. Her emotions were clearly all over the place, terror for her husband completely eclipsing her own pain, and she still had to face the delivery essentially alone, heavily pregnant, under immense psychological strain, rushing to the very frontier city he’d spent a decade protecting. She’s such a courageous character.
