Road Home Episode 18 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Family drama collides on both sides as Gui Xiao takes a firm stand on her parents’ divorce while Yanchen’s father causes yet another humiliating scene. A protective conversation reveals real depth in Gui Xiao’s parenting instincts with Xiaonan, and by episode’s end, both Yanchen and Gui Xiao are settling into their respective roles with new recruits and interns.

A Father’s Plea, Refused

Over breakfast, Gui Xiao’s father calls, wanting the family to sit down for a meal together, frustrated that her mother won’t answer his calls, and asking Gui Xiao to intervene. She tells him plainly he’s lucky her mother hasn’t blocked him outright, and she has no intention of helping.

When he asks whether people don’t deserve second chances after a mistake, she counters firmly, marriage vows, especially once you’ve built a family, demand honouring, the same as a business partnership, you don’t just abandon it the moment things go badly. Sensing the tension rising, Yanchen quietly signals her to let it go, and she does, telling her father outright she won’t be calling her mother on his behalf.

A Rejected Blessing

Yanchen suggests they visit her father together to formally ask for his blessing before he leaves, since it’s his last free day. Gui Xiao refuses outright, she doesn’t need her father’s approval, she’s marrying Yanchen, not him. Before the conversation can go further, an urgent call pulls Yanchen away to Xiaoshan’s restaurant.

Another Public Scene

His father’s causing chaos there again, having been caught by his wife dining with his old mistress, the same one he’d promised to give up when he remarried her. Furious at the public spectacle, Yanchen grabs his arm, only for his father to threaten reporting him for police harassment. Even Yanchen’s brother-in-law steps in to object, and gets shoved aside for his trouble.

A Mother’s Resignation

Once his father storms back to his own table, the rest of the family sits down together, and Yanchen gently asks his mother if she genuinely wants to stay married, pointing out she’s still young enough to leave if she chooses. She admits sadness over how much her children suffered growing up, but takes real comfort in how well they’ve all turned out, stable jobs, good lives.

Afterward, driving his brother-in-law back to school, Yanchen learns his sister’s brought up divorce many times herself, though her husband, feeling like an outsider to the situation, tries to stay out of it. Yanchen admits he doesn’t necessarily want them to divorce, he just doesn’t want her to keep suffering, and separately, he wants to shield Gui Xiao entirely from this mess, worried her relative naivety about their family dysfunction leaves her unprepared for how ugly it can get.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Meanwhile, at dinner with Xiaonan, Gui Xiao’s joined by a man who introduces himself dryly, noting she’s looking at him like she suspects he’s a homewrecker. His name is Qin Lang, a good friend of her aunt, and, more importantly, married to Gui Xiao’s own close friend.

He’s the divorce lawyer helping finalize her parents’ separation, and explains the situation’s genuinely unusual, her mother wants virtually nothing, while her wealthier father refuses to sign anything at all.

A Secret Revealed

Gui Xiao’s mother arrives and, spotting Xiaonan, assumes immediately he’s her and Yanchen’s secret child, teasing her relentlessly even after Gui Xiao clears up the misunderstanding, still digging through her bag for a red envelope to give him regardless. Later, over lunch, her mother reveals something she’s never mentioned before, that her father and Yanchen actually crossed paths eleven years earlier.

Curious, Gui Xiao presses for details, and her mother explains her father, himself a police academy graduate, had gone to personally check Yanchen out, almost certainly delivering some unkind warning to stay away from her. Her mother also questions whether bringing a young child along to a divorce discussion was really wise, and Gui Xiao simply asks her to trust that she has her own reasons.

A Lesson for Xiaonan

Walking home, Xiaonan asks why she and Yanchen haven’t spoken in days, and she explains they’ve both simply been busy, promising a proper conversation once things settle. His second question cuts deeper, why is she actively helping her own parentsโ€™ divorce?

She admits she’s been waiting for him to ask. Divorce, she explains, is a decision between two adults, and she herself is proof that a child from a broken marriage can still turn out happy and successful. She wants him to understand, gently but firmly, that whatever choices the adults around him make have nothing to do with the man he’ll eventually become, his own future depends entirely on himself, not on whether his parents stay together.

A Playful Goodbye

Before Yanchen leaves for his assignment, Gui Xiao asks if the mission’s dangerous, and relieved to hear he’s only teaching, she jokingly asks if there are any female recruits. Half and half, he admits, and she teases that she should’ve bought a ring specifically to fend them off, though she reminds him, laughing, that marrying someone as career-minded and successful as her means any mistake on his part would cost him dearly. He laughs along with her.

Training the Next Generation

Reporting for duty, Yanchen introduces himself as one of six instructors training a new class of SWAT recruits, reminding them plainly they’ve left the police academy behind, laying out strict rules on uniform conduct and appropriate behaviour, no smoking, no hand-holding, no waist-touching, an image they’re expected to uphold at all times.

Back at the Office

Gui Xiao stops by Duan Rou’s desk with fruit Yanchen received as a thank-you gift, and Duan Rou can’t help but comment on what a genuinely nice person he seems, noting you can always judge someone’s character by how they treat service staff, and he’s never once disappointed her. Feeling unwell, Gui Xiao asks if Duan Rou can look after Xiaonan for a few days, not wanting to risk getting him sick.

A Deliberately Impossible Test

Back at training, Yanchen’s colleague asks if he personally assembled the practice bombs, and he confirms it, though he assures them the devices are harmless, just timers and a matchhead’s worth of gunpowder.

He also admits, bluntly, that a few of the bombs are deliberately impossible to defuse at all, drawing accusations of cruelty from his colleague. Reviewing the results afterward, some groups perform poorly across the board, while several of the female recruits stand out as genuinely excellent.

Impressing the Recruits

Curious students find him reading a technical report in Russian, and once he mentions he can also read Mongolian and Japanese, along with conversational skills in several languages, they’re thoroughly impressed. When they ask if he built the training bombs himself, he confirms it, then cuts off their growing list of questions, warning them that too much curiosity now means falling behind on material they’ve already covered.

A New Round of Interviews

Back at her firm, Gui Xiao and Duan Rou are handed the third and final round of intern interviews, and Duan Rou admits it’s always a tough call, sorting candidates who are genuinely capable from those simply coasting on family wealth. Gui Xiao’s philosophy stays simple, always give it their full effort and never hold back.

The first candidate arrives nervous and says little, and Gui Xiao does her best to put her at ease. Outside, waiting recruits ask another colleague what the interviewers are actually looking for, and she reassures them plainly, everyone still in the running is already the cream of the crop, all Gui Xiao and Duan Rou really want now is a sense of whether they’ll genuinely fit the team, so there’s no need to overthink it, just be themselves.

Road Home Episode 18 Recap: My Thoughts

It seems the real theme of this episode is divorce, understanding it as something between two people, and if they’re genuinely suffering and unhappy, supporting their decision rather than judging it. I loved watching Gui Xiao handle the conversation with Xiaonan about it, genuinely excellent parenting on her part.

He often reflects on wishing his own parents were still together, and she works hard to help him understand that the man he becomes has nothing to do with a divorce at all, using herself as living proof, a child of divorce who still grew up happy and successful. Bringing him along to lunch with her mother felt like a deliberate way of teaching him exactly that lesson.

With divorce rates as high as they are these days, that’s genuinely a good moral takeaway for anyone watching, though I recognize it’s far easier to explain to an adult than to a child. I’m hoping any adult in a similar position, related to that child or not, can help them process it with this same kind of care.

This episode also introduces new recruits on both sides, for Yanchen at the training base and for Gui Xiao at her own company, which made for a fun, parallel plot thread. And I’m loving the playful jealousy between them too, Gui Xiao teasing about the female recruits without ever actually doubting him, careful to frame it as worry over them pursuing him rather than any real doubt in his loyalty.

I was highly amused by the โ€œsecret child” mix-up around Xiaonan too, apparently convinced Gui Xiao and Yanchen already have a kid together, and honestly, that boy continues to be the most mature wingman this couple could ask for.

A real highlight for me was watching Yanchen’s rare, cheeky confidence come out, playfully asking Gui Xiao why she’s so hesitant to introduce him to her family, confidently listing his second-class merit citation and good looks as evidence he has nothing to be ashamed of.

It’s such a fun departure from his usually stoic exterior. And her actual reason for the hesitation landed just as well, admitting she was simply terrified he’d face more grievances from her family after everything he’s already survived in life. Her declaring that she’s the only one allowed to tease him from now on was touching.

That said, the collective sigh of frustration over his father continuing to cause trouble is completely justified. It’s exhausting watching family baggage constantly threaten to loom over happiness these two have worked so hard to earn.

And I loved watching Gui Xiao’s total security in the relationship as he leaves for his month-long training post. Her complete lack of worry, her genuine trust in his self-discipline, says everything about how solid this relationship has actually become.
